I am just wondering how the camping works. I plan on camping with my car, how do they decide who gets what spot? ive heard some spots are 5 mins away and others are 45 mins? is it first come first serve so the earlier you get here the closer you are?

there are loads of threads, but before this one gets locked, I'll go ahead and tell you what i can..
When you arrive, you will most likely be in a line to get into another line to give people your tickets and to be searched, once thru there, you will be directed to your camping area. Usually its by random, but some people think that the earlier you get there, the furthur away you are. I tend to disagree, I think its all about which entrance you come in..
you'd think that's how they would do it, but it's not, from what I understand. People that show up really early tend to end up in BFE and they kinda fill things up towards Centeroo from there. After a little while it seems like it just kinda turns into a free for all, though.
But seeing as how I've only camped in tent-only, I might not be the best person to give you advice. I'm sure someone that has dealt with parking before could give you a bit more info

Well the two times i've went, I've showed up early I mean in line at like 6...
07' I went in the very first exit available (the one that takes you off the exit, turn directly right and up the road) and I was in BFE. But this year we went the backway, and tried to meet w/ friends from jacksonville at walmart, but they had exits closed and certain ways blocked off and we couldnt find a way to get to wal mart. We decided to head back the opposite way - back towards all the traffic. Well I'm following friends and they are passing by all the traffic, apparently there were two exits open, and one wasnt technically an exit, like a specially made one for bonnaroo. And i think that one was heading straight into bfe that year. We went all the way back to the real exit and there was a much smaller line in comparison, and it was actually the same one I went thru in 07'
But my guess is its random, and we did wait another 45 mins for or pals from florida, we ended up about a 15-20 minute walk from centeroo in camp ed rooney. In 07' I was in camp "M"

Thanks
Not quite - if you get in line on Wednesday night or before, say, 6 or 7 AM on Thursday, you're almost guaranteed to be in BFE (45-60 minute walk to Centeroo). I've also heard stories of folks showing up pretty late on Thursday night and ending up just 10 minutes from Centeroo. So it's kind of a crapshoot. Everyone seems to have their own opinion on when the best time to arrive is, and some people claim to have better luck with a certain entrance. Just remember, if you get put in a crappy camping spot and want to be closer to the action, you can always head over to tent only and set up there, but then you won't be next to your car.

^^^this, 100% agreed. And hell, if you end up in BFE, the walk sucks but there's PLENTY of entertainment (and distractions) along the way. First year we got in line earrrrrly Thursday morning and were ~50minutes away from Centeroo, not doing that again. Second year we got in line around 2-3 Thursday and were 15 minutes away. I can't remember to save my life which exits we took either year but I know we had a hell of a time with troopers redirecting us 3 or 4 times.
Every year we try to get there between 9-10AM on Thursday. It usually makes for about a 3-5hour wait and about a 15minute walk to centeroo. We have never really been too far away. One year we were right on shakedown, which has its perks!

This is exactly why we go VIP every year. We're never more than 10 minutes from anything.

This is the best reason to go VIP. I think we spent 10 minutes in line when we got there at 11, and we were 2 minutes from centeroo. Made it worth the money for me.

any idea what entrance you went in?
I always go with 2incommand, so I can answer this one. We always take exit 112 -- the one that's not really an exit except during Bonnaroo.

If I am coming in from Nashville, which exit would be my best bet? I am going to try to do what you all say and get there around 9ish maybe or earlier. I am a new person to all of this, but why does it take forever to get in?

Let me get this straight, once your past the security checkpoint or whatever. They lead you to the parking spots and once your parked they just let you camp next to your car if thats what you do? Do they leave alot of room between your car and the next?

Pretty much, you'll go though the security checkpoint (looks like tollbooths), then there is a long snaking line though the campgrounds to wherever they are putting cars at that time. They usually park cars in rows of two, so that you'll either have someone's car right in front of you or right in back but not both. Then you'll camp in front or back of your car. There isn't a whole lot of room to camp, figure the width or your car +1-2 ft, and ~7-10 ft deep. It can vary, if you are on an end you might get more room, if the parking people are in a bad mood/don't know what they're doing, maybe less.

So if there isnt a whole lot of room then what do you do just set up in the tent only to put up with what you got
They have water troughs to wash in at the water stations. That's what I do. It's free and the cold water feels good on hot days. I usually wash up each evening to refresh after the heat of the day and get energized for late night.
Plus, last year there was a Garnier tent set up in Centeroo where you get get your hair washed (I believe for free). There was usually a pretty long lineup of girls there every morning
When it comes down to it, 97% of the people there are sweaty, dirty and stinky by Friday morning, so you could easily go the entire weekend without a real shower and nobody would even notice. Bring some handi-wipes and a wash cloth and you should be cool. You can always take a shower in the fountain if you really feel the need

Hot showers are about $7-$10.
do people wash their hair at the troughs? or is that frowned upon? I have no problem washing my hair in cold water if it is an option.
People (myself included) was every body part and accessory in the troughs. That's what they are there for.
The troughs are kind of small in some stations so I bring a small length of hose to screw on the faucet (some have threads) which makes it easier. But a plastic cup will do in a pinch to aid in washing.

oh this is awesome news!! I just plan on bringing an empty milk jug and using that to wash my hair.

in all honesty, I don't think any campsite is more than a 30 minute walk from centeroo. I am not sure where people get the "45 minute" or "50" minute figures from.....there is nothing that is that far. Maybe I walk fast but I was pretty far away in Mitch Kramer last year and it took maybe 20 minutes tops for me to get to centeroo.
in all honesty, I prefer camping further away from centeroo, as your "pod" of porta-potties tends to only be used by campers in your area, not everybody and there brother on the way to centeroo.
