Im planning on trying this... with the ride situation looking grim. Please understand, i could probably fly into nashville, or greyhound it... but screw that, i read too much keuroac as a youth to take a plane to something so free as bonnaroo...
so, have any of you ever whipped out the ol travellers thumb? if so, from where... any stories worth mentioning?

Be careful. Things were a lot different in Kerouac's day (1940s-50s). I dont mean this so much as a 'safety' warning (the people could be just as creepy/dangerous back then, there was no 'good old days' in reality) but the police are much better funded these days and have little else to do but harass.

Yeah, if you're going to, try to avoid standing on the side of the interstate, that being illegal, the cops will bag you with a quickness out there. You could probably find a ride from someone on the boards close to you, unless you're just determined to hitchhike.
Hitchhiking is also illegal in several states......Tennessee included (right?)

No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride or employment from the occupant of any vehicle.
§ 55-8-101(49). Definitions
Roadway. That portion of a highway improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular travel, exclusive of the berm or shoulder. In the event a highway includes two or more separate roadways the term "roadway" refers to any such roadway separately but not to all such roadways collectively.

I just recently read "On the Road" and as exciting as it sounds, in this Travel Bureau-less world, you have to wonder what type of person would pick up at hitchhiker and whether or not you really want to get in a car with that person.
Would you or anybody you know pick someone up? Why not? That's why you shouldn't hitchhike! Not in the traditional sense, anyway.
With these boards, craigslist (slightly more reputable than thumbing it), and other social websites, I'd bet that you could probably arrange round-trip transportation for gas money (pretty) safely.
By the way, check out "Two Lane Blacktop" with James Taylor if you haven't already. It's like Keuroac-As-Gearhead... with Jame Effing Taylor!

After I took down my tent and packed up all my stuff, I lugged everything around the campgrounds, looking desperately for where the shuttle bus was. I searched for a solid hour and asked at least 15 staff members, but to no avail.
So, I finally decided I would thumb a ride to the Greyhound station down the road and buy a bus ticket to Nashville instead. About 45 minutes of hearing "sorry, car's full" had passed when a dilapidated 1973 Volkswagen bus pulled over. On the back, next to the Iowa license plate were two bumper stickers - "Legalize it" and "Jesus saves".
Inside was a husband and wife and their three little kids in the backseat. The husband was an unkempt white guy with dreadlocks, wearing nothing but a pair of cargo shorts. The wife looked more "normal", but was still very clearly a hippie. She didn't talk so much, but the few times she did, everything was about holistic medicine, karma, the cosmos, and other topics of that nature. He sat with his foot hanging out the window and talked to me about the shows we saw and our favorite parts of the fest. They didn't even plan to go to Roo, but they happened to be passing through Manchester on Sunday morning and found someone selling tickets by the road for $50 a pop.
She drove and he rode shotgun, while the kids took up the seats in the back. The middle bench had been removed, so I crouched on the floor, next to a microwave, several milk crates full of children's books stacked on top of each other, piles of old clothes, photo albums, toys, jigsaw puzzles and other odds and ends. I figured that they were either compulsive hoarders, or that they actually lived in the van for long stretches of time, and I'm more inclined to believe the latter.
The wife refused to accept my $20 for gas, saying it didn't feel right, but that if I was adamant about it, she would sell me one of her hemp necklaces she had made. I still have the necklace and I will cherish it for years to come as a memento of that truly surreal experience.

i hadn't seen that yet.
But you got a ride from some true Hippies. When you find the true blues, you realize that its the true lifestlye is quite different, but very fulfilling for those choose to live that way.

He wasn't very convincing and the gun was empty so I proceeded to pull him out of my car and hit him with a night stick (I've never been violent before in my entire life but I felt it necessary in my fit of rage) and yell at him about how he took advantage of my kindness and has ruined the chances of me ever helping out another kind and harmless human being in that sort of need ever again. Needless to say he apologized (more than likely just so I would shut up and leave) but yeah....
You should have a sign that says "I'm a nice guy, I won't hurt you, I promise". Haha, that may just cause MORE people to pass you up, actually. But on the opposite end, use your good judgment, if someone seems like a sketchbox, pass it up.

If I were to hitch out of Roo again, I think I'd make a big cardboard sign that says "Need ride, have corn... om nom nom" and just hope an Inforooster stopped to pick me up.

when i see people pulled over on the side i kind of feel bad that i dont stop and at least ask if i can help them. i figure most of the time people will have a phone so they can call for help though.
I don't know if you'd exactly call it hitchhiking, but I plan on making my way down to the farm from NY via the Phish route, I have tickets to more than half the shows and I'm hoping to find people at each show that are going to the next, if not a group that is doing the whole circuit as well. Of course I'm more than willing to help pay for gas and other such things. Also, when I see a hitchiker I almost always want to pick him or her (i rarely see a her) but as I slow down a little bit I tend to get cold feet. I've tried hitchhiking "in city" and had varying degrees of success. Once after a fight with my girlfriend I hitchhiked to the edge of town, then thought the better of it and hitchhiked back. Another time I got picked up by an off duty limo and drove around partying with the driver! That was absolutely my best hitchhiking experience... for a short while I lived like a rock star....
of course safety being a concern, i'd say your best legal option is to hangout at truck stops and rest stops. use your personality to make friends and bring up the hitchhiking. at least the cops won't bug you cause you're not on the road.
The last time I picked up a hitchhiker (although technically he solicited a ride from me at a gas station) was the last time I'll ever do it. Dude was sketchy, but I was feeling kind...after a few minutes in the car he starts telling me I'm making him nervous (I didn't let on that the feeling was mutual). He then proceeded to reach into his jacket and ask me what I would do if he pulled a gun on me. Luckily, he didn't, but it was enough to make me never want to do it again.
^^yeah, I don't blame you. If I were in your shoes, I'd definitely need a fresh pair of underwear after that. There are definitely some sketchballs out there, that's for sure. I'd never pick up a hitchhiker if I were alone; likewise, if I were a girl, I would neither hitchhike nor pick up a hitchhiker unless there was a guy with me.

Yeah, definitely. These people were clearly the true blues, as you call 'em. It was very apparent how different they were from the trust fund kids who just like to play hippie for a few days a year. I have the spirit of a hippie within me (which I'm constantly trying to reconcile with my inner punk), but I enjoy non-hippie stuff way too much - nice clothes, being well groomed, hygiene, not being broke all the time, et cetera. More power to those who can live like that full time, but I never could. I'm still all about peace, love, environmentalism, eastern religions, festies, recreational substances and the like... but I just love showers and consumerism too much.

well, heres the deal... dead set on hitchin? no... i would much rather find someone, but i cant wait to the last minute to rely on something that may or may not happen... besides, i am 511 210 pounds, i have an amature MMA record... im not too worried about the sketchy people per se... as of right now the closest ride from here is Cincinnati... and folks... thats not very close. gotta do what i gotta do, ya know? theres no way im not going to be there for this lineup... even if i had to crawl.
and jack, THATS what im talkin about... i like the sketchy ones, theyre my kind of peoples!
ideally id like to take a walk up to like... minnepolis, or down to omaha... but id bus it to denver, or whatever... chicago... etc. to meet up with someone...

Heh, yeah, I'm a delivery driver for Domino's so I kind of feel the need to have some protection. Surprisingly enough I've had to pull it a couple of times but that's the ONLY time it's ever been put to use. Hopefully the last. Like I said, I am in no way whatsoever a violent person. He was initially pissed because I asked if he had anything besides corn that would get me in trouble if we got pulled over, he had some... rocksalt on him and I told him throw it out or get out and it escalated from there.
I don't pick up hitchhikers anymore but if someone's pulled over with their flashers on I usually pull over and ask if they need a hand. I've just been in the position and had SO many people pass me by and it's an awful feeling. I don't want to be the cause of people losing even more faith in humanity, ya know?

I've done it before, never too far tho mostly to the beach and back and once I got a nice 200 dollar fine. I also picked up ahitcher once but he was wearing a bisco hat and it was after a fest he also kicked me down some fantastic paper. If i were you I would check on craigs list for people heading out that way or post an ad that your looking for a ride out to TN imo thats the best way to go. I've met some really great people from random craigs list rides

hey DI i have friends doing wakarusa then bonnaroo, coming from souix city, i know that only like 90 miles or so? they're taking a minivan and only 2 people are going.
