This will be my first year driving to Manchester from Knoxville (been from Memphis in the past), and Mapquest directs me south from I-40 through Spart and McMinnville on 70S (most of the way). My trepidation that driving on a state highway through small towns the day of a massive music festival is probably well-understood by this board. Has anyone made this treacherous trek before? Your thoughts.
i live at the intersection of 111 and I-40, and ill tell you from exp., GO THE SPEED LIMIT, and if u have out of state tags, then really obey the posted speed limit. Every copy in this county will be posted up on I-40 and 111, and that goes for every other county too. Just be careful and dont attract attention.
And if you do get pulled over, then you WILL be getting searched. i promise
Take it from the locals, they WILL pull you over in Mcminnville for ANYTHING!!! They are out in full force on Roo weekend in McMinnville.
A couple of years ago, there was an incident in McMinnville where they had a road block set up on 111 right at the Coffee County line and were searching everyone going to roo.
Something like 200 people were arrested. the judge threw out every case due to violation of search and seizure laws, but all those folks missed all or part of roo while sitting in jail in McMinnville.
They dont do the road block anymore, but they are still out patrolling hwy 111. BE CAREFUL!!!!

I-75 & I-24 are probably worse than the 111, 70, 55 route in many ways. i have a feeling traffic and cops are going to be hell this year anyways due to phish playing knoxville the day before roo.

^ They can pull you over for pretty much anything, or no reason at all. They can't necessarily make you stay pulled over without disclosing their reasons. It's just a ploy to see if the car smells like a skunk, or if there are open containers or other No-Nos in the car.

That route is great for bypassing any interstate traffic. Once in McMinville you can either take 55 to manchester or 127 and then 2 back to 55. I haven't done the latter but am thinking about going that way this year. 70S> 55 worked for me in 06 and 07.

SirPWB, dont take 127. That takes you through a little community called Viola and unless you want the trip to take way longer than it has to, dont go that way. It is a two lane twisty country road.
It is great scenery if you wanna go thorugh for the view, there is a mountain that runs along side the highway and it is beautiful through there. So it has its ups and downs i guess.

^^ When these guys said the speed limit, they were right. I lived in McMinnville in 03 and was on my way to manchester to meet up and head out to the farm and I was doing 5 over the speed limit. I was getting pretty close to Coffee Co. line. All the sudden I have 3 cops cars surrounding me. So even though I had no corn at the moment I freaked. I had to check my rear view to make sure I hadnt hit a person and not noticed or something.. Anyway, I did the innocent girl thing... "really bonnaroo is in town?? I had no idea!!" so the cops proceeded to tell me that I shouldn't go to Manchester if I could avoid it... dangerous people... drugs... blah blah but then they told me that they were pulling over everyone that could "potentially" be headed to the roo to prevent drug flow. That was the same year all the cases got dropped for discrimination. They arent supposed to be doing that anymore, but we all know how cops can be!!
**** Word for the wise. If you are going to be driving through McMinnville, do not EAT while driving. My mom still lives there and said they recently passed something making it a violation to eat while driving. They will use this to get you if they can! Be careful and safe!
