In 2006 my friends brother got two "press pass tickets",i guess you would call them, because he edited/wrote for his college newspaper (UMass Lowell). this meant he got to enter the festival for free, was allowed to interview artists among a group of other people with passes, and he got to bring his brother with him. this is the first time i ever heard about Bonnaroo. He hasnt got the passes since but i assume he has applied every year since, i know for a fact he did last year and they just never responded to him. the year before he got these free tickets/press access he volunteered. this is not very pertinent to anything i said but i figured i would add it.
Has anyone gotten a press pass at roo before? How did you go about getting one and how much are they?
Is it true they won't let you in Centeroo with pro photography equipment unless you have one, or does the pass only grant you access up front?
From talking to Bamabelle - who gets press passes every year - all a press pass does is give you access - if you want to bring phtography equipment in - you also have to have a photo pass and they are harder to get.
Moe on here or Bamabelle or Dirty Jerzee can prob answer any questions you have as I am pretty sure they all get press passes each year.

How hard is it to get a photo pass? My girlfriend is a photographer and doesn't need Press access, just needs something to keep the Bonnaroo Fuzz off of her for bringing in the camera.
We saw a 19 year old kid who said he ran a BLOG who had a photo pass in '07... Think it would be that easy?
I am pretty sure that the publicity email addy will be the one she would use.
Tell her to get her request in early, like today! I just requested All Good press today and have already heard back, not an approval, just a reply. Last year, I got in too late for all good and missed out on press. I would imagine it is the same with roo. I dont know for sure as Jay (Dirty Jerzee) handles inforoo's press creds.

I spoke with Ken Weinstein the day the schedule came out about them. Looks like the actual application isn't going to be released for another couple of weeks.
Like I mentioned in the other thread about this... Have a very full plan of coverage, and a good circulation base. I'll definitely be getting our applications to Roo and Rothbury in very early this year.
We have an amazing time covering the festivals and get to meet/interview a ton of great people... The artist interviews are just an added bonus!
To get a photo pass, you pretty much have to be working for a publication. I was able to get one last year through one of the local free papers here. But I also live in Knoxville, which makes the festival a little more relevant as far as news goes. It can't hurt to try, I still can't believe I was able to get mine last year.
And like the others said, they made it very clear last year that a Press Pass didn't mean you could bring in a professional camera, you had to have a photo pass to get access in front of the stages.
Can someone lay the entrance, camping, security etc. routine on me for those who have attended as press before? I'd like to know what to expect.
Yes upon arrival to the farm....you find me and give me your pass. Then you setup my tent for me and make sure I have an ice cold beer cracked at all times..... ;D

I don't think it is any different then those of us that just go. The only difference is you have an additional colored bracelet that gets you into the press area backstage and access to the artists. My understanding is that there is no special press camping - no preferential treatment on entrances or security checks.
A lot of the press people had guest camping last year, which i believe is backstage. It is on the application when you apply for the press pass, it asks you if you want to apply for guest camping. I didn't have that last year, and it would have been so much nicer, than having to walk 15 minutes back to my camp at night carrying all my camera equipment. As for getting into the shows, if you want to shoot either of the main stages you have to be there before they go on and they escort you in and out. For the tents, most of the time you had to be there at the beginning but as the weekend rolled on, most of the security guys would let you in at any point.

We got word yesterday that my GF will be the newest intern photographer for Creative Loafing: Atlanta, So we're hoping when she starts soon, maybe they'll help her swing a photo pass since she already has a ticket and a ride.
I'm a journalist for a prominent family of newspapers in Arizona, I applied for a press pass, or at least sent Ken an email.. What are the chances I will be accepted?
Thanks ya'll, either way it's Bonnaroo and I will love it!!

You will have to fill out the application that will be available on the site sometime in March
Just to let you guy's know, the press application is now up on the website, it's under the contact section. Good luck, here's to hoping I get one again.
Actually...I looked when I filled out the app this year...it doesn't actually have a place for "press/guest" camping.....it asks you if you WILL be camping and how you will be arriving to Bonnaroo...car/flying/driving with friends/RV and HOW MANY friends...and how many tix you need vs how many press passes you need...not sure HOW you would get into "guest" camping...never tried to since I have always been with a group of non-press friends and either had an RV in GA or been in VIP...and neither have really been much of a bother for me. Yes...both have been a bit far of a walk to the PRESS area....but the guest camping area (depending on where they put you which I suspect if you are just Joe Schmo reporter is WAAAY the heck at the back of the area) could be a MUCH WORSE spot for MOST of Centeroo than a lot of GA and ALL of VIP...so...it's really a call on how much time you are gonna spend back in the press area vs how much time you are gonna spend out in the festie area....
Probably depends on the size of your publication. I can almost guarantee that NO one gets more than one photo pass...tho one press and one photo pass isn't extreme for MOST pubs of a decent size and circulation base.....most writers AREN'T photogs and vice versa...thus the option I'm assuming. AND it IS a big festie with a LOT going on so there IS a lot to cover so...eh....like I said...if it's a decent pub with a decent circulation I think it's gonna depend more on your coverage plan and the publication....there's no reason it should matter...I don't think there is any hard set limit on Media-Only passes tho I'm sure they don't want to go TOO overboard. It's the Photo Pits they try to limit the #s on the most.
As for where to camp...Press is allowed to camp anywhere they like in GA ....media tix are just regular comp tix so you just bring your tent and set up with your car or in tent only. If you are bringng an RV idk if they set you up with an RV pass or not....guess I'll find out this year though I am already covered if not so I'm not sweating it. If you want to camp in VIP you'll have to cover the cost of a VIP ticket yourself....as I say...I'm SURE you can request to be in "guest" camping and as space allows they will probably accomodate....but you might have to send a seperate email to Ken or the Big Hassle team.

Ah, thanks. I suppose I'm one of the few who pulls double duty with writing and photography. Our circulation is 160,000 and music is arguably our most popular non-localized content, though I'll probably request just one pressie and two tix.
LOL! I'm with you there...if you work for a smaller publication and/or a POOR pub...then you multi-task!
BUT...a photo band gets you in everywhere a media band does...so if you get a photo band AND a media band....you essentially ARE getting two passes....you really only need the photo band if it's just you.....
I remember reading a few years back that monthly readership had to be 50,000+ in order to be considered. Not sure if that has changed any.
I don't know if that's true. I got a photo pass last year for a small paper here in Knoxville and there is no way we had a readership of 50,000+. I dont know, maybe I just got really lucky, I'm not expecting to get one this year.
