So I'm reading a nice little write up about Bruce Springsteen's Super Bowl performance on NYMag's culture blog when I'm hit with a little throwaway line at the end.
Bruce Springsteen’s Super Bowl Journal Reveals the Reasons His Terrifying Crotch Slide Went Awry

There was a long stretch of Bruce Springsteen's career where he was far less open with both his fans and the media than he is today. While the naysayers that have crept out of the woodwork in recent weeks (see: Stephen Metcalf, Jon Friedman) would probably say that's a good thing, we feel like he's been striking a pretty good balance between continuing to grow the relationship between himself and his fan base and maintaining enough mystery that people don't tire of him. Take today's exhilarating Super Bowl–focused entry over at BruceSpringsteen.net, for example, in which he candidly discusses everything from his initial concerns about the performance (both philosophical and technical) to the crotch slide that terrified audiences worldwide.
It's been a while since we've read something that put us right inside the mind of an artist in the way that this piece does, let alone one of this stature and one who is willing to admit that his last thought before taking the stage was "Lord Don't Let Me Screw the Pooch in Front of 100 Million People." He touches on the nerves that accompanied the lead-up to the event, and even confesses that he's worried that he will "find myself 'out' of myself and not in the moment." And he also talks about the incident that will be forever burned onto the brains of anyone who watched the halftime special that night:
Too much adrenalin [sic], a late drop, too much speed, here I come Mike … ;BOOM! And I'm onto his camera, the lens implanted into my chest with one leg off the stage. I use his camera to push myself back up and … say it, say it, say it, say it…BLAM! BORN TO RUN
But of course, the piece is only partially about doubt. It's mainly about the adrenaline rush, the thrill of performing, the camaraderie he shares with the other E-Streeters and their "ambition to play for everyone. We've achieved a lot but we haven't achieved that. Our audience remains tribal … that is, predominantly white." Even with all that said, for them, the gig really boiled down to this:
But what it's really about is my band remains one of the mightiest in the land and I want you to know it, we want to show you … because we can.
And that's exactly why we're going to make the trek to Tennessee in June, where we'll battle the oppressive environment of Bonnaroo for another chance to experience a moment with the Boss.
What is a Mark Graham and why does it feel the need to randomly take a dump on my favorite festival to build up his personal mancrush? I feel we must introduce him to wrath of glowsticks and sparkly objects as penance for this inflammatory sentence fragment!

perhaps hes just referring to the fact that you are on a in Tennessee on a farm with minimal shade in the middle of June?
pretty oppressive conditions. i doubt most of us would be able to deal with it if it werent for everything going on around us to keep our minds off the heat.

yea i think youre right, in NY theres shade everywhere cause of the buildings and whatnot, maybe he'll bring an umbrella

I like the article. It IS an oppressive environment and I hope like hell some die hard Boss fans discover a world of music they didn't even know existed. I also hope some haters stick around to see what the Boss can do when he's not trying to impress the football crowd.
lol as someone from MA, i hate being related to Yankees in any way shape or form.
As far as we're concerned down here, if you're any farther north than Louisville you count as a yankee. It's just so much more fun to say than "northerner." ;D

^Football references during the set or no, I thought his Super Bowl performance was pretty incredible considering he had 12 minutes. My little sister (age 6) saw the bit and said he should go on American Idol. Girl has an eye for talent.

This is great news as I am from Louisville and would not like to be classified as a yankee by anyone, anywhere. That being said we get our own stereotypes thanks to the great state we are a part of. Some of the best corn anywhere!

agreed... being from new york i hate when it is assumed i am automatically a yankees fan. in fact, i don't really like baseball altogether, but if i did, my least favorite team would be the yankees... bonnaroo '07 was my first experience with, uh.... regionalism? (whatever you want to call it, discrimination-by-location) for being a "northerner." I was wondering around early sunday morning pretty spun out when i spotted a group of guys on the other side of a fence whom i asked if they could spare me a beer.... next thing i really remember the whole group is pushing up the fence trying to elicit me into a fight and one guy says "at least i'm not a northerner!" I was so shocked i started laughing and fortunately enough I still had enough smarts to just walk away... i did eventually cop a beer from a very lovely "southerner" not much later on. yay!

I find this especially funny since I'm from New Orleans and we say anything above I-10 is Yankee. ;D

Roo is wayyyyy to badass to be a chick, no offense to the females out there. But Roo is that big hippy dude that can kick your ass, kinda like that Eddy guy in Tekken.

Yeah, what he said...Im from BUFFALO NY, not NEW YORK CITY, like everyone in the frickin world assumes when they hear NY come out of your mouth...and I dont like baseball, I'm way to ADD for that stuff! Go Bills! lol
I am a little disapointed by the north/south talk. Last year being my first, and that being the furthest south I have ever been in my life, I was a little shellshocked. However, the only incarnation of the typical southern stereotype were the police. I got sideswiped by a semi in Louisville, and the cop that responded was out of a cartoon! And once we were in proximity of the farm, I could hardly understand the police giving directions, I thought they may have helped themselves to some confiscated goods or something. Anyways, Yankee,Southerner, Redneck, Northerner, arent we all pretty much the type of people who's mindset is supposed to be above labels, stereotypes and plain discrimination for all of the tens of thousands of people that gather together here, from all walks of life, all locations, and all having different racial/social/ideological and religious backgrounds. What I'm really trying to say is PEOPLE are PEOPLE! Just this "Yankee's" thoughts, lol. Later on!
