It's proven that having 'cheat days' is beneficial! You're much less likely to completely backslide if you allow yourself a day every now and then to go a bit overboard.
Not only are you less likely to fall off the wagon, but it's good for your body to be shocked. The human body learns to adjust to the amount (also type, timing, etc) of calories that it is getting. By shocking your body, it doesn't allow your body to become to accustomed to the lower total calorie intake (and therefore lose more calories over all).
Anywhooooo... I am still on and off depending on the day. While in Florida this past week, I went on a run 3 times with my mom and sister and had a killer yoga sesh, so that's good!
For anyone interested, I am doing the Elf4Health Challenge. It's 4 weeks long (today is day 8) and the challenges differ greatly from day to day. From diet to movement to general life improvements. For example, today is "Eat the rainbow" (try to get all the colors in every meal), yesterday they encouraged you to hand write a letter to someone, tomorrow they want you to go makeup free and Thursday they ask you to work out with a friend. If you truly want to join rather just follow along, you get paired with an elf to email for encouragement, recipe swap, etc and the Facebook group is extremely active (as well as the #elf4health hashtag on IG)
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

That looks fun! Good for you!! I just started the myfitstation.com December fitness challenge. For those interested: they have a calendar with a workout plan for everyday of the month (as well as menu options). The specific workouts all have videos that demo them. It seems extreme but I'm really excited and am VERY sore so far! (I also go to yoga 5 times a week...keeps me sane)
After falling off the wagon for a while, I hope this keeps me motivated!
going back and reading some jenny posts for positivity and inspiration
maybe i'll get my countdown workout on tonight
You can do it! I had the "I need to change my life" revelation in mid-October. I cut 6 inches off my hair and joined a gym (planet fitness). I've been going to the gym consistently for 5 weeks now, and I can finally tell a difference. It took about 3 weeks before I noticed anything starting to happen, I was frustrated there for a while I'm not keeping track of my pounds lost, because I'm hoping to build some muscle, but instead seeing how my clothes fit.
It was hard at first because it took about three weeks for me to notice anything. I was frustrated because I've been eating well and busting my a$$ at the gym but nothing was happening. But now I can tell a difference! Just don't lose that motivation. Going to the gym is hard work. Every day it's a challenge... especially the elliptical machine, God, it makes me want to die. But it will be worth it when I can finally wear my old clothes again!
I used jenny's advice with my workout. I start with 15 minutes of cardio on the elliptical machine, then move to the weights (I use the weight machines because I've found the free weights really hurt my wrists), and then I finish with another 10-15 minutes on a bike. It takes about 50 minutes total, or an hour if I add in a few extra weight machines. Some days I just do cardio so I can rest my muscles.
If anyone needs motivation, I'd love to have a buddy!

I wish I was working out with you all!! I'm so jealous...I will be reading your posts for motivation in a few weeks.

These last two days have been those ones where you are doing something physically active literally all day...on top of that we had my roommate's gf's birthday party on Monday so I got about 2 hours of sleep that night..I take it as Roo training since that is pretty much how Roo is: no sleep and lots of moving!
My boyfriend's best friend's sister is getting married on Dec. 7, and the dress I'm going to wear is a bit tight. So I'm hoping I can lose the 10 lbs it will take for the dress to fit well without wearing Spanx
Today is the day! I tried on the dress a little while ago and .............

Hi. I'm fed up with being a fat ass. I just need to poke my head in here and say that.
I need to take action pronto. I want to be able to watch the Sunday headliner this year while actually standing and maybe dancing. Past couple years, wasn't really able to make it physically. And that ain't cool.
Plus, I'm ready to start feeling better about myself. And looking better. And feeling more confident.
Word on the street is exercise helps with all that? Ok let's give it a try.

You can do it, GF! If I can do it, really, anyone can.
It's not easy to exercise. There are days when I would rather sit on the couch, but always remember what your goal is.

Will do. Heading out for day 2 at the gym now. Also have been good on a >1800 calorie diet for the past week. I just need to stickkkkkkk with it.
My biggest weakness will be corn. Sticky green corn is everywhere around me here and it makes me hungry and lazy. Trying to ignore that it ever existed in my life will be a big challenge for me.
Edit: You are awesome for offering immediate support and encouragement. Forgot to say that.
I too am tired of being a fatass. I figured the quitters thread helped me so much (9 weeks smoke free), that i would give the fit thread a shot Today starts a new day. P.s. You all rock hard!!
Went to the gym yesterday for the first time in SIX weeks! Argh. I wanted to do so much but could only handle about 10 mins on the elliptical with pretty low resistance and then did some walking on the treadmill for 30 mins. Taking the day off today and picking it back up again tomorrow. I can't wait for a sweaty workout to happen. Not for a few more weeks probably.

what kind of caloric intake do you ladies shoot for?
i've been aiming for 1400 and trying to include as much whole food as possible in those 1400 without making myself insane and/or too stressed to stick to something.
i haven't weighed myself in a week or so, so i have no idea how i'm doing weight-wise, but i've been feeling a bit better/slimmer.
also - for those that do cheat days, what's your typical pattern on that?

I'm not one of the ladies, but my calorie goals vary a lot based on my exercise routine. Without consistent exercise I try to stay under 2000. Generally in the 1800 range, but if I am working out a lot I go up another 400 or 500 most days.
If you're working out dont be too restrictive on how many calories you eat.

For me to lose weight it needs to be around 1200 for me. It is really hard to keep within that, but I try SO hard. When I am doing well, I track everything I eat and drink, and exercise in My Fitness Pal on my phone and that helps me be accountable, plus it helps me figure out what I can eat for dinner if I cheat at lunch etc. My cheating is a huge problem because it always happens when I go out to eat, which is about 1-2 times a week. When I eat out, I really have no control and get whatever I want, and regret it later So I do 3 days of doing great and then one bad day, over and over again. Hence I never really lose anything....
I am at my heaviest ever and am pretty disgusted at myself, so I really am trying hard now. I have to look good for Bonnaroo!!!

hang in there and be proud of your efforts! you can do this.
i've also gotten to my heaviest ever over the past couple months, behaving for a few days and then going off the food rails entirely, but i'm determined not to stay here for long. i'm gonna turn 30 at roo this year and i want to hit it feeling good. recently i've been keeping a note in my pocket with all the reasons i want to get back in shape. i want to take care of myself better while i'm young so i can live longer and enjoy life more, i want to hit 30 in good shape, i want to open my closet door and not have to ignore stuff i don't fit into anymore, etc. it's extra dorky but when i read it the cheesiness inspires me and helps me resist a gummy worm run.
my gf and i are doing this together, but it's easier for me at work because i have next to no options for lunch and pretty much have to bring it, while her coworkers want her to go out to lunch every day and make it hard on her. she's usually able to pass, but she doesn't always want to, so for the times that she gives in we've tried to get nutrition info for the places she might go and she can know ahead of time what to get without going nuts. maybe that will help?

Definitely getting the nutrition info will help. When I was a strict practicing vegetarian, I would know what my go to options were at most of the places nearby. Some are obvious, some are not. A little research will go a long way. I try to keep a couple of general rules or ideas.
1 - If it has cheese is it good cheese that I can taste? If not, nope. 2 - No mayo. Just nope. Sorry. 3 - Should it have sugar in it? Yes, ok, then it might be ok. No, skip things that have sugar but really shouldnt. (Think ketchup) 4 - Is it covered in a sauce? Is it a tomato sauce? Then ok. If not, nope. 5 - Is it a potato? Think before you eat it.

I aim for about 1200-1300 calories per day. Sticking to it though is another issue I'm really good with my exercise, but eating is my weakness. I love food! Basically, I try to include as many veggies as possible into my diet. I eat a salad for about 4-5 meals per week. I cook at home a lot so I'm able to watch what I buy at the store. The biggest issue I've found is that my boyfriend needs a higher calorie intake because he's very active at his job, so he doesn't want to eat veggies and chicken all week.
My advice is: eat things that are good for you that you LIKE. Don't go out and buy a ton of avacados if you know you don't like them! That may seem like stupid advice, but I've made the mistake of buying things that other people have mentioned they LOVE, I ended up not liking it, and tossed it. Wasted money AND a wasted meal. Also, if you want to do salads, change it up regularly. I try to make a "southwest" salad every few weeks with beans and corn and peppers and I put an entire avacado in it. YUM. I also make GIAGANTIC salads. I don't feel bad for eating a big one because it's veggies! Just watch the dressing, obviously. I have been buying the OPA Greek yogurt dressing. The feta and dill is only 50 calories.
I'll be happy to help keep you motivated!
I just downloaded My Fitness Pal and I haven't used it yet, haha. But my username is the same as it is here, if anyone wants to add me!

Thanks all for the support. I have also been eating less chicken and turkey and leaning towards more vegetarian meals for some reason, so that is a good thing. I never use mayo, I use hummus on my sandwiches, and non fat greek yogurt to make chicken/turkey salad. Sugar is my BIG weakness. And of course alcohol!
We have started a group at work to support each other in our weight loss efforts and weigh in each week. Jho let me know if you want to come. No one will see your weight if you don't want them to. It's just a way of being accountable with others trying to do the same thing. It's kind of like weight watchers, but it's free, and you can lose weight the way that works for you
I'm so happy I found this thread! I've been wanting to get in shape for years now.. It's sad because i used to run cross country, play basketball, do track, etc. and was in great shape, But over the past 6 years since I graduated HS i've literally gained around 100 lbs. from just being lazy and comfortable in a long term relationship. Recently we broke up and now I'm feeling more disgusting than ever. It's time.... Roo is in 6 months, i'm hoping to lose around 40 lbs by then, maybe 75-100 over the next year. I literally do NOTHING. i eat out all the time, don't exercise, nothing. Any suggestions on where to start? Where should my calorie intake be, doctor suggested a 1200 cal/day but i think that may be too big of shock to start with. i feel like i need to ease into things.....
also, just saw this the other day and i thought it was hugely motivating so i thought i'd share.

If any of you want to get really fit and not work very hard, eat a TON of fruit, and little to no animal products. I understand that most people aren't down with this but it'll truly change your life, in a great way. There's no limit to how much fruit you can eat. I know fruitarians(frugivores), they're physical specimens and world class athletes. Dairy is terrible for you. If you can do without this it will pay huge dividends. Personally I LOVE cheese but try not to consume it regularly.
Anyway, good luck everybody! I hope you all hit your goals whatever they may be

I would suggest downloading the My Fitness Pal app (if you have an app-supporting device). It asks questions like your current weight, your activity and what your goal is, and it will recommend a caloric intake for that goal. If your doc recommended 1200, you might go back for another visit and talk to him/her about a more tailored plan if you don't think 1200 is feasible just yet.
Obviously, getting active is the best way to jump-start your metabolism. Whether it be at home with workout videos (which you can find online for free!), or even going out for a walk. I joined a gym (Planet Fitness) and have been going regularly since Halloween. I've really enjoyed working out, more than I thought I would. I took the advice of some people here in this thread and I divide my time at the gym between cardio and weights. I actually look forward to using the weights after my time on the elliptical because the elliptical machine still makes me feel like I might die The plus side of using weights: I have less arm flab!
We're all here to motivate and not to judge. (I mean, I had a salad for lunch but then went to a movie and had popcorn and coke so yeah)

So let us know how we can support you!
I def think I need to talk to my dr about the plan she gave me. I just don't think that 1200 cal/day would work for me bc it's such a drastic cut to start with. I have never stuck to a diet so really applying myself alone wiill be a challenge at first. I have a planet fitness by my house I was thinking of joining. How do you like it? ((Obviously every gym is going to be different but in terms of machines and knowledge of staff?)) where did you start when you first went to the gym? I'm not a fan of treadmills, I'd rather walk outside or on an indoor track ((I know they don't have one))
Might I suggest simple daily walking program and one word, lifestyle.
My Wife and I walk every night with our dogs, the milage and time varies but we get at least two miles in every night. On weekends we hike with our dogs, on average we go on 4-6 mile hikes. We live in the northeast so we do this in rain or snow, even when we had single digit temperatures the other week we got out there.
We use a app called map-my-ride, this works great to track your progress and it really gives you some great information on milage and elevation gain. Another useful tool is a device like a fitbit, with this like the app you can see how on track you are on or off.
Another is cycling, we are recreational cyclists that moved from mountain bicycling to road riding. Last year we clocked a little over 2,400 miles on our road bicycles. This by far as been the best results from exercise that we have seen.
If you have a bicycle check out a local rail trail in your area. Bicycle chops also have group rides that can be a lot of fun.
I say all of this because we are headed to our mid 40's and have attended six Bonnaroo festivals and never have had any issues with walking or heat. I can honestly say that we enjoy our time outside and have taken in other hobbies like photography and geocaching to name a few.
But don't do this for Bonnaroo, do it for you! Do this so you are not visiting the Dr. once a week when you get older. Want some more motivation? Pay yourself a dollar for every mile you walk, put this in an envelope and enjoy it then you arrive at Bonnaroo !
If anyone has any questions about this and do not want to post it here you can email me at genemartel@me.com I would be more then happy to motivate anyone.

You can always start by making small changes to your diet. Such as: if you eat breads and grains and pasta, switch them all to whole-wheat; slowly incorporate more fruits and vegetables; if you eat out a lot, find something lower-calorie on the menu. Once you are comfortable with the small changes you've made, then you can make the big switch. I'll admit, there are some days where I'm hungrier than others and I know I go over my caloric intake. Don't beat yourself up over it; just work a little harder at the gym and start fresh the next day.
I enjoy Planet Fitness! And for $10/month, it really can't be beat. The staff at my location is super friendly. Don't be afraid to ask them how a machine works; it is what they are there for! They also have a free trainer that you can schedule time with, and the trainer can help you figure out a good routine. PF has a lot of machines, and it can be overwhelming at first. I personally observed people using the machine (on the sly, out of the corner of my eye ) before I used it. At my PF, there are a lot of people like us that are trying to lose weight and get in shape. I've never felt intimidated or out of place.
I took jenny's advice (she also goes to a PF) and my routine goes like this: 15-20 minutes of cardio to start (I use the elliptical machine), then weights (I use the weight machines instead of the free weights, but whatever works for you), then another 10-15 minutes of cardio to cool down (I use a bike). I then stretch afterward and spend time with the foam roller on my legs. I'm usually there for a full hour. I rotate the weight machines that I use each day so I'm working different muscles.
When I first started going, I could only do about 10 minutes on the elliptical, and then with the weights, I could only lift like 5 lbs, haha. It was sad. But as time as gone on, I can do more. So don't be discouraged if you can't do a full 10 minutes of cardio at first. Do what you can and make it a goal to increase your time.

I'm back on the weight loss train for 2014!
I've been working out (mostly weight training) consistently, but I gained 10lbs since we bought our house in July and another SIX over Christmas (BAH) and this aggression will not stand, maan. Fortunately, the Christmas 6 fell off last week when I resumed normal eating (whew) but the "new house ten" needs to go, and another ten with it...
I quit drinking during the week (empty calories!), and have been getting up for 7:30am workouts. Hoping changing my sleep patterns (and getting more sleep in general) will shock my system. Also doing much heavier cardio; 30 mins on the stair stepper at a high pace, then 20 mins of freeweight/bodyweight/isometric exercises. Keeping with my usual paleo type diet but cutting back on dark chocolate (sniffle) and potatoes (waaaah) and no gluten-free grain substitute things whatsoever. Trying not to over-deprive so I can maintain for the next 8 weeks, then return to a slightly higher carb percentage and go back to mostly weightlifting.
Can't sugarcoat it... fat cutting sucks. But its easy to maintain once I get there at least!

I want to lose weight but will be the first to admit I'm super lazy. I have a fast metabolism and every time I've tried to lose weight it comes off easily, I just have horrible motivation to get off the couch and work out!
Thanks for the awesome response!! I'm def going to take your advice and start with small changes!! And that work out routine sounds doable. I think I'll go in on Friday when I'm off again and set a membership!! Thanks again! You're awesome!!
I needed to read this thread today. I am having a hard time getting motivated to get back into my routine. Yesterday shopping on my lunch break was more appealing and on the way to work today I stopped at Starbucks for a venti peppermint mocha and I already feel lazy.

I need to get my head back in the game!
I feel like this is me every 2 weeks or so. I start off doing so well...food prep, going to the gym over lunch, passing on junk food, going to yoga after work, ect. Then after two weeks something lets me fall off and I fall WAYYYY off! I'm trying to combat that with letting myself 'cheat' every once and a while. Hopefully that will withstand my complete breakdowns lol.
Did really great yesterday and then had a donut this morning (that I passed on yesterday) but I'm letting myself have those little rewards once and a while...we'll see.
