I'm surprised your OHP is so high compared to your bench. If you can put 85 lbs over your head, you could probably lift a lot more on your bench. There is some variation between people and their kinematics, but typically a lifter (when training both OHP and bench) will have an OHP:Flat bench at about 0.5-0.6:1. For someone lifting only since the beginning of the year, putting up 5x5 at 85lbs is pretty strong. There is lots of front delt and tricep carryover from OHP to Bench. I bet you can put up more than 105.
this makes sense. my last workout OHP was pretty tough and bench has consistently been super easy. i've just been following along the stronglifts program, which started me at a 50lb bench and adds 5 lbs per workout. when i deloaded my other workouts i did not deload bench since it's been so easy, but i did stay at 100lbs for a few workouts. since it's still easy maybe i'll start adding 10lbs per workout until i start failing.
When you first start (or restart) lifting you can make gains pretty quickly, and running a linear progression like SL can be slow going if you start with too little weight. At your next workout, do your 5x5 but on the last set, grab a spotter and do AMRAP (as many reps as possible). You can use this to get a decent idea of your 1RM, and then readjust your training max based on this.
As a comparison, last week I did 5@105 on OHP, and 5@185 on bench.
I finally started going to the gym after so many years. Yesterday was my first day at the new gym, so I didn't wanna go hard on myself, 30 min threadmill + 20 min elliptical. I feel good.
I know that nobody cares, but since this post I’ve lost 8 pounds! I can’t go to gym as frequently as I’d like to, but I’m feeling more and more healthy each day.
My current goal is to feel comfortable in a crop top by summer, which I'm thinking is about another 15 lbs from me. Should be achievable for me; my challenge is always to not lose too much muscle in the process, but that's another story.
I think it's safe to say I reached my goal - 20 lbs lost. Now just gotta make sure I don't eat it all back by Roo.
I had a bad rotator cuff injury for the last few months of last year, which really hampered a lot of the heavy weight lifting I could do, particularly my fave, sumo deadlifts. I'm not back to my pre-injury PR, but I did hit a 2x body weight deadlift today for 2 reps, and am on Pace to PR before Bonnaroo.

I had a pretty bad shoulder injury so I've been out for a few weeks. Sorry to disappoint anyone who was looking forward to my guns makin an appearance.

i care. big fan of weight loss stories, congratulations! 8 lbs is a lot.

congrats on 20 down! that is also a lot. two thinks keep my on track with my eating: (a) i know if I really gorge i'll feel physically terrible afterwards, but more than that (b) i want to enjoy treats guilt-free when i'm on vacation or a special event. so with movement + bonnaroo to quickly follow around the corner, i don't want to be thinking about my weight when i'm scarfing down a coney or an amish doughnut, respectively.
but even when i'm on vacation i don't eat like i used to quantity wise. i'll treat myself, but i won't eat until it hurts to move.

Same here. It's weird. My girlfriend and I treated ourselves for 4/20 by getting a Sicilian pizza...I ended up eating like two and a half slices. I don't know who I am anymore.

i don't know the scientific reason for it either. probably has something to do with physically having a smaller stomach then we used to, but also mentally we remember what the stuffed puffed feeling was like and we don't want to feel that way again.

PFFFFT you're on your own there buddy. Haha I sincerely love that feeling, I've just worked too hard to voluntarily give myself excessive calories to work off.

My AC joint is still not fully repaired so I regret to inform you all that I am going to have to cancel the gun show scheduled for brunch. My gymn schedule has been off for two months now.

I had one slice of pizza at Nelsonville last night, and a corndog the night before. That would have just been a snack six month ago, but it takes so much less to satisfy me now that I don't eat that stuff all the time.
Currently down 40+ pounds since January, and about at my final target weight, so I hope the delicious beer and festi food to be consumed over the course of the next week don't kill me, haha. I'll be eating whatever the hell sounds good at Roo, within reason (not going to go too crazy on carbs), and going back to keto and IF after that. It's become easy enough that I don't have to think too hard about what I can have, and I feel good, so I'll stick with it a while longer.

Eat less and move more. And actually you don't even have to exercise, if all you want to do is lose weight just eat less. It's annoying and takes discipline and you will have to learn how to be hungry sometimes, but if you take in less calories than you expend, you will lose weight.
What works best for me is tracking calories. I aim for the same amount each day and then adjust the number depending on how my weight responds.
Calorie tracking + exercise was the only thing that actually worked for me. I was fortunate enough for my family to buy into my regimen with me though. Very sorry you have to deal with that, Slack. If you want to DM me and chat about weight loss strategies I'd be happy to help.
To be a little more specific about my weight loss goals...
I currently weigh 217 lbs. My goal is to weigh somewhere between 150-175, but I also want to add a little muscle, so my target weight after weight loss is probably somewhere around 130-150.
My specific goals are thus, in order of importance:
- weigh between 150-175 - add 10-25 lbs of muscle - lift a 30 lb dumbbell in my left hand, 15 in my right - set a new mile PB (<7:30, although I did that on an elliptical)
The muscle goals are geared toward regaining muscle tone in my right arm and leg. I want to prevent them from atrophying too much, because my range of motion is already lower than what it used to be. If the mile goal doesn't work with the muscle goals, then whatever. The muscle goals are more important to me.
I've had doctor's orders to get 2.5 hours of exercise a week. That, uh, has not happened. I don't use the calorie tracker I have much either.
'
My thread necromancy powers are UNMATCHED.
I worked out for 30 minutes. It felt nice. Just walked around my block a bunch. It's a nice .4 mile loop so I did it 5 times.
Getting to a point where I'm eating 200 calories and feeling completely full
Dude outstanding weight loss! Congratulations!
Covid season has seen my weight creep up. I could stand to lose about 10-15lbs I think. I've been doing significantly more cardio but also eating more. Decided I need to stop "treating myself" so much and cut back on the calories.

it was bound to happen eventually, but after several months of running roughly 15-20 miles a week i have an injury. this is the longest i've successfully continually run without an injury. typically i get the standard shin splints on the front of my shins, this time it's a mild pain i feel only when running on the inside of both my ankles, which is another form of various injuries that fall under the shin splints umbrella.
taking a break from running and will do some ankle/lower leg exercises and stick massages to try and work it out. should probably go to a doctor and get a PT referral but covid.

so luckily this wasn't a big deal. i stopped running for about a week. went and got fitted for some new shoes, turned out i was wearing half a size too small and needed more stability. picked up The Stick and before my runs do 2-3 minutes of calf rolling.
i run every other day and on off days do strength training and/or foot eccentrics on steps. i typically run for about an hour at an easy pace, between 8:30-9:00/mile, feeling free to stop and walk for a minute if something feels off. I am much more interested in avoiding injury than i am improving my speed or distance. Typically I make it about 5 miles a run, though I'd love to get to the point where I'm doing an easy 10k on every run.
patting myself on the back, but i'm in the best cardiovascular shape of my life. when i first started running regularly in March I'd go a couple of miles and even after a cool down i'd get home and had a special folding chair i would sit in and just pour sweat and breathe and listen to my heart beat a million miles an hour. now when i'm done running for an hour and walk to cool down my heart rate returns in normal in 5 minutes or so.
the unfortunate part of this is despite all the running and weight lifting I have lost zero pounds lol. it's possible some of that is muscle since my clothes fit a little better but that is probably being too generous to myself. weight loss happens in the kitchen, not while exercising. and since 2020 has been so horrifying i've allowed myself to deem 2020 a year of comfort. i'm watching TV shows that make me comfortable, reading books that make me comfortable, and eating pretty much whatever i want, but managing portions at least a little, i.e. three scoops of ice cream instead of five.
maybe in 2021 my motivation will change and i can get my diet fixed and lose the 15 pounds or so i'd like to get off. but as it stands i'm proud of myself for at least getting the exercise part right.

Good for you dude, glad you're sticking with something. This year I've stopped exercising and have taken up baking, so. Yeah. I have doughy parts to poke now.
I really need to get myself moving more though; I've started having spasms in my glutes - just sitting on the couch and then ZING, my glute medius contracts and jolts my leg. It's not fun. I got my girlfriend a massage gun for her birthday last month though and I think I'm gonna end up using it more than her; it helps a lot.

yeah i sit all day at my job. getting out into the fresh air and getting moving has done wonders for my physical and mental health.
not sure if you are interested in running but i forgot to mention i used the couch 2 5k app to get me started. helped me to train up slowly and kind of learn my limits and now i just get out there and wing it.
maybe i'll be one of those psychos who does the roo 5k next year. probably not but i like that i'm at least thinking about it.
