so ive been to roo for the past few years and was thinking of mixing it up this year...heard rothbury was pretty cool but a friend told me you can't use any of their cabins, waterpark, or any of that stuff this year (which seemed to be what distinguished it from other fests)...
they dont have a lineup out yet but roos is awesome this year...any suggestions on what fest i should go for??

Im going to Roo/Bisco this year but i would probably be going to Roth if i didnt already have plans for the 4th of July.
Ive heard nothing but incredible things about Rothbury, and im pretty sure you can use the water park and the cabins are some type of VIP package (i think)
If you can make it to Rothbury it would be silly to miss it, that being said I dont think Phish will be there this year...
Didn't use any of that stuff anyway. It was over $1000/person for a cabin. And if you want to go to a waterpark, go to a waterpark. The forest/amazing lineup/sweet atmosphere is what made Rothbury stand apart from other fests, not all that extra crap.

I'm no festival Pooh-bah, and my eyes require corrective lenses, but there's always been trees at Bonnaroo every time I've gone.
I could be crazy, though. I saw some guy climbing a figment of my imagination during Jack Johnson 2005 and have often napped against large, bark-covered shade dreams.
There are no rows of trees like at Roth, but there are trees. They could do some lighting of the trees that are there. 10KLF has tons of trees and they don't do a thing with them. Each fest has it's own personality that makes it special. We don't really want them all to be the same. That's why I'm going to Sasquatch this year, I want to try something totally different.
Yeah no forested area at Bonnaroo but plenty of trees in Centeroo, I was fascinated by those weird chrysalis light things hanging up in them. I tend to base my festival selection on music and closeness, I am a pretty tough guy, and can handle dust/heat. Rothbury seems like a lot of fun, but is way to far from me to make it worth it without a stellar lineup. If they had Phish for their only festival appearance instead of vice versa, I would be thinking hard about it though.

The ranch arena was also 10x better than any stage at Roo... that was my one highlight. Overall though, I'd say the only things that Roth has over Roo is climate and the Ranch Arena. The forest is cool, but I don't do halucinagenics so it has a cap of awesomeness for me I guess.
Most everything else is better for Roo. (Except for the drive is 12 hours instead of 1 hour with Roth in my backyard)
Oh, and the monkey chasing the snake was creepy yet interesting... hard to describe and I don't know if any good videos exist.
Please explain how the ranch arena is any better than every stage at Roo. How is it any different than the which stage? It's smaller than what. Rothbury has no tent stages! Every show is in full sun. If it rains, you're gonna get wet. Sorry but Roo has the advantage on stages. And to answer the op's question: If you live far from Michigan, no Rothbury is not worth it. Unless you love no2, because they have more of that than anywhere I've ever been.

The way the Ranch Arena was set up was perfect. It was at the bottom of the hill, and there wasn't a bad spot in the entire place. Plus the grass was perfect and it was really comfortable to just sit and enjoy the shows. There was some decent places for shade around the outside edges too. I sat in the shade and chilled to Brett Dennen Sunday. I'm not comparing it on size or whether or not it will shelter you from weather, I'm saying its great for seeing a show at no matter where you stand. The hilly nature of Rothbury made for some stages with decent views from wherever. Roo is pretty flat compared to Rothbury. For the same price ticket however, I think you get more from Roo. I'm an hour away from Roth and 12 from Roo, and I'm going to Roo this year definately and not sure on Rothbury (I know a kid that lives nearby and they get free tickets for living so close so I might con him into getting me one, if I do then I'll go... haha).
Oh, and the vehicle situation is kind of nicer at Rothbury. Its easier to get in and out, they've got fire lanes in between each row of cars, so when you want to leave you don't have to rely on 15 other vehicles having left before you.

There are tons of trees, so you can sit in the shade and watch music at most stages. The Ranch Arena had a ton of trees behind the stage, and they'd bounce the lights off the trees. Very sweet.

When I saw that during the Bisco show I was so enamored. Between that and the glow sticks I was just zoning out pretty good.
Thank you for explaining, you make some good points. I have to give you some karma for that signature.
Haha thanks. The quote was one of my brilliant words of wisdom trying to help out a coworker who had just broken up with her long time boyfriend. She was trying to say that she should just marry a rich guy and next thing I knew that came out!
