I have been a subscriber to Rolling Stone for many years and have always held their 5 Star Reviews in high esteem as they are pretty rare. I listened to the new U2 record this weekend as many others did im sure and i thought it was exponentially worse than their previous two records, and thats putting it lightly. Though RS has given this acclaim to a few undeserving records in the past (Springsteen The Rising, Kanye's Late Registration) this marks a new low. They have noticed some true classics since the 90(White Stripes Elephant, Beck Sea Change, Dylan Love and Theft, and Brian Wilson Smile, Springsteen's Magic) but U2's No Line On The Horizon ruins this club of classics. Thoughts? What are ur classics post 2000?

Sure the mag itself is filled with crap. Half about Winehouse and Lily Allen roaming around naked. But the list of records they have chosen to be 5 star( even upon reissue) are incredible, consistent records based upon songwriting. I dont think any of those u listed are better than "Smile" "Elephant" or "Sea Change", though the only one i either dont have or havent owned in the past is the Opeth record (so i cant say about that one). Dont get me wrong Tool and TMV are badass as it gets but just too inconsistent or erratic from song to song imo.

I pretty much think the five that I named are among the 5 greatest and most consistent albums ever recorded. But...thats why there are opinions. I've never found Beck to be anything special at all. And I think Elephant might be The White Stripes' 3rd best album. Bob Dylan hasn't done anything for me since about 1975. And I've never gotten into Springsteen or Brian Wilson at all. So to me....Rolling Stone = Rolling Stone hasn't had credibility for decades.

First off, Why in the world would you listen to a new U2 album? Did someone one force you to listen to this album? Was a ransom involved? Were you tricked into before you realized it was garbage? Please tell me it was not voluntary...
Second, any mag. who puts any "high" rating on a new U2 cd basically loses all credability in my book. Horrible band that is living off of one good albulm (Joshua Tree). Still milking the same sorry E chord over and over. Tired lyrics, glossed over bass lines and guitar riffs (I use that term LOOSELY) that a 10 year old could play. Edge still looking like a new-age pilgrim and Bono with those screwed up glasses.
As for many others listening to the album...were they forced as well? Did they drink the kool-aid? You do realize that U2 has been TERRIBLE for years now right? I am not being fictious. I am dead serious.
Bono does great charity work...I just wish he would save us from the sorry, lame-ass music U2 has put out for the last 20 years or so.

Dang im kinda getting bashed here for reading Rolling Stone. I do agree that Arcade Fire Funeral is a classic album even tho i prefer Neon Bible a little more. No i didnt buy a U2 record it was free to listen to on myspace. They do that from time to time Was worth it to have Dan Auerbach Keep It Hid on there but the U2 record didnt have one good song. worthless.

I haven't read much Rolling Stone, and generally have a low opinion of "rock criticism" or whatever they call it these days.
I will, however, be spending entirely too much time and energy over the course of this year considering my "Best of the Aughts" list. Here's nine albums I would consider "classics" right now (year 2000 included):
Radiohead - Kid A Outkast - Speakerboxx/The Love Below Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free D'angelo - Voodoo Aesop Rock - Labor Days TV on the Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain Silver Jews-Tanglewood Numbers

My problem with Rolling Stone is less about the content of their criticism as much as it's about the limited exposure they give bands outside the popular spectrum of music. Publications like Paste and Pitchfork (and even Spin to a certain extent) have helped create ACTUAL change in the music industry by championing bands that were once regulated to genre ghettos like "Indie" or "Americana". To me, Rolling Stone is irrelevant not for who they review and rave about, but for who they don't.

Excellent point. I'm very into film and music, and I find film criticism to be sometimes excellent and sometimes maddening. I find "rock" criticism to be almost always the latter. Film criticism is sometimes grounded in some theory. Rock criticism never seems to be. Does hip-hop count? Soul? If you make the umbrella too big, why aren't you reviewing classical music? Jazz? If you just say you are reviewing "popular" music, how is that defined? What are the criteria? At the end of the day, an individual can only listen to so much music. In 2009, people with regular jobs can probably listen to the same amount of music as a music critic reasonably can. Music "criticism" ends up just being some a-holes opinion. A good film critic, for example, can see many, many more films than I possibly could having a "day job". In the age of the internet, the same is not true for a music critic. With no real theoretical framework for "rock" or "pop music" criticism, it just ends up being some a-holes opinion.
That said, dudezer's point about how you use the audience/platform you have is a great one.
I love Paste which i also subscribe to, but Rolling Stone is usually quicker on the news, at least online. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a good one, as is Speakerbox/Love Below. Spin is all about hype the way Rolling Stone is all about fame.

Yeah, it's one of those albums that I can just keep going back to, and still love it.
Was worth it to have Dan Auerbach Keep It Hid on there but the U2 record didnt have one good song. worthless.
