My boyfriend and I are going for the first time this year and our tent is pretty big -- 14x15 feet. This is an eight person tent, but it's the only one we have. We are wondering whether or not this will be so big as to annoy our neighbors. We can't really afford a new tent, but don't want to piss people off. How cramped are the tent cities? Will people be annoyed with two people taking up so much space? We also have a small car.

Where will we be camping / parking? Are we going to be able to camp next to our cars?
Camping space will be provided in front of or behind each vehicle. NOTE: Each vehicle will have a camping area of approximately 10 feet by the width of your car. You will not be able to save spots. If you plan on parking/camping with your party you must arrive together
Then you go to tent only and claim your space. I don't think it would be a problem in Tent Only. Best way to avoid issues anyway is to be friendly - help out your neighbor and they are less likely to gripe about the size of your tent
im in the same boat...my group has a big ass 8 person tent...i think we're going to just head in and first see where they put us...if we can stake our claim in the regular campsite and share some room with peeps then we're going to stay...but if it looks like it's going to be too cramped we're going to hike over to tent only....there's generally always enough room over there...

I rocked a 12x9 tent and a 10x10 ez up right next to my car last year, no worries, not even CLOSE to having the largest setup in my immediate area.
The official space is a big underestimation. Sure you could be stuck with that little space, but chances are you'll be fine. If you do get stuck with a small spot, you can set it up in tent only provided you get to the farm before it fills up.
Swing wide as you pull in. Jump out and lay out the ground tarp for your tent right away. Adjust as you become friendly with those next to you. It'll be fine.

This is the best idea. Lots of times you'll have enough room. Sometimes you won't. Bonnaroo only guarantees that 10 ft width but only in '03 did I have that small a space. Usually it's bigger but an 8 man tent is pretty large.

I guess I will throw in my $0.02. Last year we were way out in BFE but had a pretty sweet setup. We were in the last row of cars with just a big field beside and nobody in front of us. 3 of us went and we each had our own tent. Mine is a 6 person tent, my friend's tent is a big 8 person cabin tent, and my other friend had a 4 person tent. We lucked out and as much space as we wanted but I am guessing that rarely happens.
Everyone is making me feel a lot better about the situation, but I might still see if I can borrow a smaller tent- if not we'll just have to make sure we bring some extra food or something to offer the neighbors so they won't be too upset with us.
[insert inappropriate pitching a large tent joke here]
haha yeah i was just gonna respond "that tent is way to big"
but really we had like an 8 person last year that was huge, then we also had a shade tent too so you should be fine. we were 4 guys but really that shouldnt make a difference

Our tent is huge. Our group is huge. We get there early and head to tent only where there has always been plenty of room. No one ever gets upset with us b/c they can borrow anything under the sun including shade, chairs, mallets and water. We couldn't do what we do by the cars and it takes some initial effort (especially if you get parked in BFE), but it's worth it for the rest of the festival.

Regardless of the policy stated, I have never had a problem claiming as much space as necessary. Since you will be arriving at the same time as your neighbor, communication will solve any issues before they have a chance to arise. See you there!
Ok guys couple questions from a first timer- 1) We are going with another couple riding in a separate car. We had planned on going in together and sharing our site, if we pull up beside each other can we leave a little space between each other? We are both taking vans and plan on hooking a tarp to each roof rack for added shade 2) Ok I love camping but hate sleeping on the ground so I'm bringing a blow up bed but the pump plugs up,will there be a pace to pump it up?? 3) We had planned on camping with our cars since I'm sure to over pack, but is tent only camping better? Closer to center roo? Is it a far hike from parking?
1)In theory you should be able to park to cars in such a manner that you could set it up like that. Seems like a cool setup to me. 2)Unless you get lucky and your neighbors have a pump the answer would be no. 3)If your cars are filled with stuff it very well might be easier to stay at yours cars. If you should decently it shouldn't be to long of a walk and you don't have to carry all your crap. If you show up late it might be a good bit farther than you would like.
For the cars thing the way we were parked it was 2 cars bumper to bumper in each row, so you'd either be directly behind/infront of each other of kitty corner (like we were last year), so not sure how well that would work.
Buy a power inverter if you want to plug in anything. Make sure you get one powerful enough (shouldn't take that much, probably would cost $30-40 and they're super useful to have for other things too!) Or get a battery powered pump, someone I was with last year had one and it was great.
And if you're over packed, especially with 2 vehicles being vans, I'd recommend staying with your vehicles, it'd be a pain in the butt to haul a bunch of stuff to tent only.

I had an 8 person tent, a screenhouse, and another small tent all set up by the car and it worked out fine. This year i'm going with a 6 person 12'x10' tent

The hole "10 feet by the width of your car" is complete BS.
When you are pulling into your parking spot - be prepared to jump out as soon as possible and start to unload stuff. Get a few items and spread them around to claim your area.
If the 'Roo worker is trying to pack you in too tight or they are trying to put you in a spot you know will suck - then just ignore whatever their directions are and find yourself a good spot.

in the past i have gone with friends and between two cars we had
three tents and two medium size shade tents
I have GOT TO GET ANOTHER TENT however because I went in 07 with a freakin ARCTIC tent. While great at night, the mornings turned into a 1&1/2 person toaster tent.
Last year I was a rookie and so worried that my 6 person tent wouldn't fit. So, I brought a smaller back up. When we pulled into our campsite the people who were parked in the row in front of us had already claimed all the space. The parking guys had me pull right up to their tent and then had another car come in behind me. When I got out I protested and asked the neighbors where we were to set up? They said behind the car behind us which by the time he said that was full and no where near our car. They had like three tents!! I got pissed!! My sister said chill don't yell since these will be our neighbors ( I didn't think they would be since no space). They saw I was mad and said they would move their tent and after a few minutes did move it. We ended up setting up going side ways infront of our car and the one next to us but after all the neighbors got settled we ended up with a small open space in the middle. And they were awesome neighbors- they were just rookies and got a little overzealous claiming space. But no matter what you will find a spot to set up your tent!!
Ah this has been a big concern for my friend and I...we'll be 4 18 year olds, our first time (so excited) and we bought our tent yesterday. it's 18 ft by 17 ft but the suntent/canopy is connected so we wouldn't have anything else. it's for 8 people but we like our space we're hoping it's not too big...we found it for $130 locally

So, just saying my experience in GA in '07(went VIP in '08).
We were rookies and heard about the pull wide thing, but they made us repark and the girls next to us were rookies too so they pulled in really close.
To one side was a group of guys that had small tents in their area and we actually had to walk into their site to get out of our ez-up thing(it had mesh walls on only two sides) but they were totally cool with giving us the walking room. On our other side were 2 rookie girls with a tent that was big enough for 10. They didnt have enough room to set it up at all. We attached one wall of their tent against a wall of our ez-up for support and set up half of the tent with the poles. It was completely supported and it never even swayed in the wind.
Their tent took all their camping room that they hung out with us in our ez-up thing in the mornings... very cool.
Oh yeah, our numbers for dimensions. the ex-up thing was 10x12... we literally had only the 10feet wide of space. After everyone set up their campsite, we then pulled our car up all the way to the car infront for a little extra room for grilling. So, we had enough length to have the 12foot ez-up and a grilling/chill area infront that fit about 6 people one night.
So we are going to have two small tents and a huge canopy this year. The canopy is 30x30...so I am worried about getting cool neighbors to share the canopy with us. If anything, I figure I could put a portion of the canopy over my car and the rest over our tents/hangout area (if the neighbors don't comply). I am also hoping to meet up with someone in TN to have two cars and thus more space. Anyone have any thoughts?
i just got myself a new two person backpacking tent. mostly for backpacking trips, but also i was tired of trying to cram my huge 8 person tent, with only 2-4 people in it, in the area provided.
my new sierra ASP 2 is bad ass. cant wait to introduce it to Roo. plus it will just ease my mind knowing im not taking up what could be very useful ground for other roo'ers.
