So i'm traveling from chicago to bonnaroo, and i'd like to make it a little more interesting trip by stopping at some cool sightseeing destinations. any suggestions?
We live in Minnesota and on the way home the last two years, we've stopped at Mammoth Cave National Park. We've taken two of the cave tours and stayed in the campgrounds each time. I thought it was really cool. It's located in Kentucky. You'd have to go for the next fifty years to see the whole cave. Hence the name Mammoth.

I was there in the Fall of '03. There was a drought going on. The deer were skin and bones, but the squirrels were so fat, their bellies were dragging on the qround and they could barely waddle.

One warning about the campground at Mammoth. The deer are way too tame there. I had them coming right up behind me when I was cooking burgers on the grill. They will steal your crap if you don't watch it. It's cool, but not so if you don't expect it.

Not on the way from Chicago, but any Eastcoasters going down 81 NEED to make a short detour at exit 180, Natural Bridge, VA for FOAMHENGE... truly FANTASTIC!

From Wiki... gotta love the many contradictions of America
"Moore County, where the Jack Daniel's distillery is located, is one of the state's many dry counties. Therefore, while it is legal to distill the product within the county, it is illegal to purchase it there."
You could always stop in Bells, TN (near Clarksville) and see if you can spot the witch (see An American Haunting). While you're there, stop by and see the headless statues in Palmyra.
In Metropolis IL which is by the IL/KY State Border on 55 south has the world's largest Superman Statue. It is a good place to get off the road for 20 minutes. It has a Museum that is open 8-5 that is only 3 dollars. I Stopped here on my way to nashville from St louis.
It was fun, nothing special but fun nonetheless. However, be warned that the whole superman deal is right by the police station so if your doing things you shouldn't this may not be your stop.
It wasnt anything I had to see, but with the Museum being 3 bucks what's the difference. It is about 10-12 minutes off the highway. Google map it if that sounds like your thing.
there is also the Yazoo Brewery in nashville. they make some pretty steelar beers. they tour is kinda meh, but its just a lil small brewery right next to the hood. the beer its nice though!.
Has anyone been to Shenandoah National Park in VA? We are looking to do a couple of days of hiking after Roo. Went to Smokey Mountains last year, which rocked. Are there good, safe trails at Shenandoah? Thanks friends.

Shenandoah is awesome, but different from the Smokey Mtns. There are tons of trails. From 2 hours to all day, you can find something to suit you. Lots of people from the DC area do day trips.
