So this will be the third year my friends and are going. The last couple of times we seemed to have really struggled getting the canopy just right.
We used PVC and tarp, but the PVC seemed really flimsy and the top would sway in the wind. We dug small holes in the ground and put a piece of PVC about 5 inches long inside. Then we slid the long PVC pole inside the short one, and tied the tarp to the PVC with rope. It worked, but it would sway and come down on the tent sometimes. I figure there's got to be a better way.
Does anyone have any suggestions? The group coming this year is actually going to be much larger (around 20 in lieu of 3!), so we have a larger area to cover as well.

With 20 people have them all throw in like $10 or whatever is felt necessary, and go and buy some EZ-UP's. I am not sure what they run, but they are easy to put up, very sturdy, and provide good shade. Attach a few tarps or good tasting towels to the sides and you have some extra shade, say from the side the sun rises.
I think EZ ups are close to $100. Walmart has some canopies with screen walls for about 30-40....just get a bunch of those and line them up next to each other.
Another thing you can do, especially if you have some SUVs is put tarps up between the EZ Ups and the SUVs. We did this 2 years ago and it worked great. We built a wall of cars to block out the sun to the east and put the EZ Ups on the west side of camp. We strung some large tarps between the two that we held up with the 10' poles. We then put our tents under the tarp which kept them cool in the morning b/c the SUVs were blocking the sun.

I like this idea. With so many of us going it will be easy to bring at least a couple.
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo

I was thinking that I could put something together with pvc and tarp. I really do not have $100.00 to be spending on an EZ up. My idea was this:
Get thick ass pvc pipe and make one side a little higher than the other for rain. Tie it to the poles very well with rope and run it thru pre drilled holed in the pipe. IF the pvc is thick enough and placed deep enough in the ground wind shouldnt bother it. Its all about keeping the tarp tight and making it angled so water runs off correctly. The whole thing cant cost more than 15 bucks. Maybe a little more if you need to buy a tarp too. I have lots
The ground at Bonnaroo is VERY hard. It took us a really long time to get our flagpole up and, even then, it wasn't super sturdy. I'd advise keeping your eyes open for a deal on an EZ up. I got a very sturdy one on clearance at Target last year for $19.99 and had no problems with it.

You are so right. I had totally forgotten about this. I remember we had to pour a lot of water on the ground in order to soften it up a bit. Even still, we couldn't get the poles in very deep.
Any better ideas to soften the ground so the pipe can lay in deeper, and therefore, more secure?
Unfortunately, no. Even with two very strong men and a massive mallet, we still had some sway on the pole. Someone we camped with had a metal flagpole holder that you put on the ground and then drive over, which "stakes" it. It has a spike on the bottom and then a pipe on the top into which you put your flagpole. I don't know what they're called, sorry.

Spend the money on an ez up. I mean the brand EZ UP. I recently bought a $70.00 Quest "ez up" and I put it up twice and pieces starting bending on it. It was aluminum, so I would suggest buying steel. I bought a Coleman mesh tent with "tent poles". I put it up today while the wind was blowing and a pole bent during erection. I found an EZ UP Pyramid 2 online for around $150.00. They have the pull pins for the legs which are awesome and very sturdy.
As for inserting a flag pole into that tennessee dirt, I would avoid it. I bought the 13ft fishing pole at walmart and am zipping it to my ez up. I did think about building the infamous pvc pole and making the base into a square out of really thick pvc pipe and then park on top of it. I don't know if it would work but it may be something to try.

I'm going to probably buy a shade canopy, not an ez up, or figure out a good way to make one with tarp. I've made quite a few tarp shelters/shades in my day, so I hope I can figure something out.
The only decent method I could see for building a tarp canopy would cost as much as some EZ-ups as tarps and poles can be expensive (unless you already have much of the materials)
Post = $5 each post driver = $25 PVC = $5 each 10x20 Tarp = $50-$100
Using t-posts and a post driver, I have easily driven posts at Roo. They are incredibly stable. But t-posts are only about 4ft long after driving so could only be used as the sides (unless you want to stoop every time you enter) You could drive t-posts in the middle and wire tie PVC to them.
I have everything I need to build several huge ones of these and still use EZ-ups as they are easier, quicker and more stable. If you don't have all this material it would be costly. This set up would cost $100-$150 and require a bit of work for a 10x16 shade area. You could get a prefab shelter or 2 EZ-ups for that.
