i would make a flag pole and all but i just dont have the motivation. ill just hope my neighbor makes one.
this reminds me of the 08 Roo dvd. my favorite part is when they show this group of three setting up camp and they are like "oh we have a palm tree and a flamingo were gonna put on the car. it will help us find our camp and it adds to the atmosphere" haha, i love that. i wish i met those three last year.... are you guys here?
I think the new prerequisite for using the internet should involve being able to answer several simple questions, such as, "what do you think can be used to create a flag pole".

I made mine out of an extendable pool skimmer pole. Then I put a tennis racket on the end and zip tie a colorful tee shirt or fabric from the bottom hem of the shirt to the round rim of the racket. You end up with a 30 foot pole that has a wind sock on it. Even if the wind isn't blowing you can see it as long as you recognize your design. I hammer a steel pole from a horse shoe game into the ground and slide the pole over it. Viola'! Perfect 30 foot flag pole that will fit in your car with out having to strap it to the roof.

...^^^That, Sir, is pure genius, pure quacking genius. Karma for the idea! I've always been too lazy to build one and just hoped the folks around me came prepared... I think I may actually use this.
You can buy replacement collapseable tent poles at places like like Dick's sporting goods for pretty cheap. My plan is to get one of those, zip tie or duct tape a flag to the top, then tie it to one of the legs of my ez-up for stability. they're pretty light weight and they take up almost no space at all.
That way I don't have to worry about multiple peices of pvc, or hammering anything into the ground, or finding odd ball items like an extendable pool cleaner polls

Here's a little mspaint drawing of the flag we made last year. It was probably 12-13' tall and very sturdy. The bucket was full of concrete (to the top) so it was really heaven, preventing it from blowing over. The two PVC pipes fit together perfectly with very little room to wabble and once the two pins were in place they were very sturdy. We set it up in the middle of the yard and it stood for days, then at roo it stood until the wind caught our shade canopy in the giant storm of 08 and it fell. Once we put it up again it stayed up the rest of the weekend. Next year we won't tie canopies to it haha.

While this could be a good idea... I don't know if hauling a 100lb+ bucket of concrete would be in the nature of Bonnaroo, considering greening is one of the themes surrounding the event. Guess it depends on how far you're traveling?
Where can I find a telescoping pole? I need one for another non-flag related project.
Also, I'm not sure what they're called, but our neighbor had a square metal plate that had a spike on one side and an open pipe on the other. He put it on the ground and drove over it, which drove the spike in to the ground. Then the flagpole went inside the open pipe on the top side. Genius, because the ground at Bonnaroo is hard as rock.

Check out a kite store. They have these types of things. In Boulder, down the hill from RV's other mom, they have an incredible kite store. It is called Into the Wind. I've bought things over the internet from them. Poles all of different lengths.
I know that they also have great places over there on the right coast.

You can also checkout WalMart. I don't shop there anymore, but I got the telescoping golf ball retriever there. Then I just broke/sawed off the cup that the ball went in. You could also try pool store, since I know I have a cleaning rod that goes from 10-20 feet. You might want to find that broken into fourths or something though, unless you have an rv/big car/are willing to put it on the roof. Hope I helped!

I assembled 3 skinny pvc pipes and cut them shorter to eliminate bending. I also stuck a 2 foot long skinnier metal pole in the ground to keep the flagpole standing. Then I tied it to my shade canopy. Texas represent.
Just be sure to actually test the flag pole before you head to Roo. Last year I made one out of PVC that was too small diameter and it bent and swayed and looked like it was going to snap whenever the wind picked up enough to move the flags. I went back to the store and got something thicker and larger diameter.... and it worked great.
I used three long pieces of pvc with couplers holding them together. I glued the pipes into the couplers and had a small saw with me to cut it all apart at the end of the weekend.
This year I'm going to use a pipe-and-drape upright and base (if there's anyone here in the staging industry you know what I'm talking about) that I'll ratchet strap to the roofrack of my Jeep. That thing won't go anywhere.... even in a dust devil.

I plan on making one this way:
7/8/9/10 Gallon Bucket Enough sand to fill that bucket 3 sizes of PVC all 4 feet long Big screws long enough to stick through PVC
1. On Each PVC pole except the top one, stick a screw all the way through and wrap duct tape around it so that it won't come out 2. Fill bucket with sand and stick the widest PVC all the way down 3. Then stick the next biggest in, then the smallest one(the top one)
On the top one, use your imagination to figure out how to hang the flag, it shouldn't be hard
Hey whoever recommended a tent pole, I don't want to be negative, but collapsable tent poles are usually really flexible and can barely support their own weight when held vertically, much less the weight of a flag. I think you can get the PVC parts for like max 20-30 bucks at the local hardware store, thats the way to go if you ask me. If I weren't volunteering this year thats the way I would do it.
