I literally got sick reading this article. Especially how they were calling the kid a "subject" in the press conference. He's a freakin' person, that YOU just shot, show some damn compassion and refer to him as a person. Narcotic raid team shoots a college student over selling some herb to pay for his tuition, way to go police. At least we know they're here to serve and protect right?
The kid likes jambands, and volunteers at music festivals if he is not one of us here on inforoo, and it is entirely possible that he is, he might as well be. I hope someone does a fundraiser for his legal defense. I would contribute for sure, I am with aruawhere this just makes me sick.
yea this sucks...then the owner of the apartment building says is disappointing it happened because he signed a "no party" agreement. I can name a million reasons its disappointing and that isnt one of them

the thing that gets me is the officer who did it is on paid leave while the investigation is underway. Why the fuck is he still getting paid for shooting a kid? They won't comment on why he shot him, and it also says in the second article that the guy was unarmed and not resisting... so what the fuck cops?

Wow! That makes me fuckin' sick to my stomach. ??? 5 officers??? Really??? Busting a 20 yr old college guy, who is known to be a decent kid, for is supposedly selling marijuana??? I'm speechless. It took 5 men?!?! With guns? At his backdoor? This is all so crazy. I hope someone or an organization make a big deal about this. This is utterly ridiculous.

BTW, I messaged the guy threw Facebook (god I love the internet) and I offered him to work Rothbury with me. I noticed he was from Grand Rapids, so I figured that'd be the least I could do. He's still in the hospital, but he happily accepted as long as he recovers in time. So, I'm hoping that some inforoosters and some infoburries will help him out and donate to a fund. I'm going to try and work something out, if it doesn't come to fruition though, at least now he's got a free ticket with me for Rothbury this year. Anyone willing to contribute? I'd just want to get an idea of how many people are willing to donate before I start anything up
P.S. - His exact quote to me was the following;
"im in the hospital right now, i cannot believe the level of support on this topic."

So let's show him some more support
I'd definitely be willing to donate some money!!! I think that is wonderful idea.

Wow this really is terrible... Hopefully the kid survives and can get as much justice as possible out of the situation, although no amount of money can heal a freakin bullet in your chest.
And of course the police will "find" whatever evidence they need to "find" in order to prove that this one kid posed an imminent threat to 5 police officers. Meanwhile the trigger happy cop gets an extra vacation thrown in for his work year.
Makes me sick.
...and holy shyt this kid looks really familiar to me. I wonder if I've seen him at a festival before...
-Coming through an apartment's back door, an Ottawa County deputy allegedly shined a flashlight into the student's face, causing him to raise his right hand in front of his eyes.
The officer, whose name was not released, fired a single bullet into Derek Copp's chest. The 20-year-old Grand Valley State University student, who survived the shooting, said he had no idea the man was an officer."
-Jim DeVries with the Police Officers Association of Michigan "said the deputy is required by contract to give a statement in any internal sheriff's department investigation that could impact his job, but it cannot be used by prosecutors for any criminal charges," reported MLive.com. "So far, no internal statement has been requested."
-Dilley says his client is making a satisfactory, but guarded recovery. The bullet tore through his upper right lung and liver and damaged two ribs.
This was my favorite part:
-National media has been absent on the case and local media has focused on 'irrelevancies,' noted Michigan Messenger's Ed Brayton.
"The Grand Rapids Press took a look at Copp’s Facebook page and found that it had 'drug references,' as though that had some bearing on whether he should have been shot or not. They found out that the student had expressed 'his advocacy and interest in reforming marijuana laws' and that he had declared himself to be a 'left wing hippie peace-keeping liberal.'
"But wait, there’s more. He had advocated the passage of last fall’s proposal to legalize medical marijuana in Michigan. And he liked the movie Drugstore Cowboy, as well as - gasp! - Martin Scorcese movies. Worst of all, he had quoted Grateful Dead lyrics.
"This strikes me as the drug war equivalent of asking what a rape victim was wearing."

they like to waste massive amount of resources arresting people like this. i was watching cops the other day, they raid a house with TWO people in it and they showed up in full kevlar, 2 vans full of cops and one other car. 2 people... and why is this country so poor?

As much as I'd like to agree with this, the police have to wear stuff like that in any raid. I mean who knows if there's a meth-head in the basement with a sawn-off?
With that said, stories like this make it unfortunate that the green plant is grouped with all the others. It's a shame, but the problem isn't the police being excessive with their raid teams, it's that mary jane is categorized with other things that can make their jobs that dangerous

I think his point had more to do with the amount of cops that showed up... but yeah, they don't know what to expect in there.
I agree with you though how it is categorized with everything else. That is kind of a bummer.
There was an article on digg today that said over 100 million americans admit to smoking in their lifetime from a government survey... and 15 million said that they had done so in the last month. The article was simply arguing that if legalized it would help the economy out a bunch... also it would cut down on the violence in Mexico and cut some funds to gangs. I don't see how any of those things are negative. Fuck politics.
