Hey Everybody! Getting excited about Bonnaroo yet? Spring is in the air.... Roo is near!
Anyway, this time around I want to talk about the land-grab. If you're asking yourself 'What's the land-grab?' let me tell you. You pack your car at home. You drive manymanymany miles. You wait in a long-ass line. You drive across a field and some dude in a yellow shirt says 'park here'. You get out of the car, do the funny been-in-the-car-too-long stretch/stumble, think 'I need to take a leak', and notice you're actually packed in pretty tight against your neighbors. There are already 10 more cars parked in your row and tents are going up all around you. People are not really friendly yet. You've not met the neighbors. Matter of fact, the neighbors seem to be setting up quite the tent-city. How did they fit 8 people in that hatchback anyway? They each have a tent?!?!
THIS is the land-grab.
Be ready to grab land the moment you park your vehicle. If you're traveling with a crew make sure everyone is on the same page regarding this. I keep my 10x10 EZup as accessible as possible so that about 5 minutes after I park I've got my 10x10 behind/beside my vehicle claimed. Next I assess the scene. Is it going to be a packed-in-like-sardines year or a might-as-well-plant-some-corn year? If your space is unlimited count your lucky stars, take that leak, and relax.
However, if you end up in a sardine can you've still got some work to do. If you don't get your stuff set up now you just may not have space to set up later. Just remember a couple of things during this relatively stressful time: Don't take too much space. Your neighbor deserves to be comfortable too. Bonnaroo says you only get the width of your vehicle X 10 feet. If the only tent you brought is something that one of the smaller acts could play in... you may want to check out tent only at this point. Also, don't be a weiner. These people are going to be your neighbors for the next 4 days. Stay calm, work hard, compromise with your new neighbors, get your stuff set up.
So there we go, tip of the week vol 9.: Be ready to set camp immediately.... but be considerate of your neighbors. Plan accordingly by bringing an appropriate size tent and having your tent readily accessible in the car.

Did a nice land grab in 06 and got my 17x12 set up nicely. We were all packed in like sardines in camp p.ussy galore but there was a giant open field right next to us with unlimited space. Weird.

i had a 20 x 10 canopy last year, we parked opened it up and they cut off the rest of our area from more campers and gave us tons of space, we ended up with about 30 x 10 with the canopy and shade tent. claim your space or get squashed like sardines.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
Last year, when we realized we were parked in BFE, we made the decision to hike to Tent-only so we would have more space. Our neighbors had already set up a lot of their stuff in the two minutes it took us to decide this. So we introduced ourselves to them and explained that we were going to check out tent-only. We asked that if tent-only looked to be full (which, btw, it wasn't even close), if they would save us some space to at least pitch our tent. They were very nice and agreed to save us some room. We came back about 30 minutes later and let them know we were staying in tent-only so they could have the space they saved for us, which they really appreciated.
Moral of the story: just be kind to your neighbors and they will (mosty likely) be nice to you too!
Making freinds with your neighbors is crucial from the get go in my opinion. Last year Both our neighbors and my crew had ez-ups we planned putting up but no where near enough space for both, so we decided we'd put up ours which was bigger and share for the weekend, which worked out great cause they were awesome and alot of fun to hang out with. In other past years we co-ordinated our campsites with neighbors so that we put our ez-ups right next to each other to form one super canopy of awesomeness.
Get your space claimed but don't be a douche! chances are if you work with your neighbors it will drastically improve your over all roo experience.

Definately a good tip, me and my crew always scramble out of the car to get our camp site set up ASAP. It is stressful sometimes, but I have never been without space to put my tent up.

Yeah, we scramble, but if you knew how to put your tent up, it would be a lot less stressful. Heh heh.
Ha Ha. Last year we had 7 people sit camp up ( I dunno how much help i really was ). But this year its just me and my bf. It's gonna be interesting for sure.

I drove last year. As we were going through the gate I switched with my bro so he could drive and i could land grab with the ezup. It worked out well but he didn't know what the hell was going on.

last year we got screwed with a crappy parking spot. but our neighbors on both sides were kind enough to move a bit. it would've really sucked if they didn't move. just be nice to your neighbors and everything should work out...unless they're total douchebags
This year I bought a huge sun shade from e-bay (30x30). I am hoping to install it in a cleaver way where it will cover my car & our tents. I am hoping to meet up with another inforoo car in TN to hopefully have more room for the setup and to share all the shade and fun with them. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!
I was there at the Tornado! Was on the other side near the pond... crazy times... all of us were holding are ez-up, even though it was staked down.. blew like the dickens!
