Hey - first timer here wondering how many friends is a good number to go down to Bonnaroo with. How much space is generally available at the campsite? And what other concerns should I consider?
It all depends really. For space you get the space in front (or behind) your car unless you make the treck to tent only. Not sure about the space there first hand but from what i hear there is plenty to go around. Lots of people like to go in large groups and get caravans consisting of 12 cars I personally go with a few close friends with 2-3 cars. In 2007(last time i rooed) we had 3 cars and 5 people and we had plenty of space for 2 shade tents and 3 sleeping tents one of which was quite large. Hope i could help

We've got a minivan, so space in the car isn't as much of an issue for us - but it's more of an issue if space is limited based on the number of cars we bring.

If you can take 2 cars--I would unless you plan to trek to tent-only. We are taking 3 people in one car and have 2 tents a canopy and a shower tent and will be treking to tent only for fear we wont have enough room behind the car. my bonnaroo in 2006 was completely ruined because of crappy neighbors that took their spot and most of ours. I didnt argue with them because well it was roo and I just wanted to get setup and not have to deal with that

If you are talking general logistics or space considerations, the more the merrier is your answer...but in our experience (last four roos, first crew 4, second crew 4, third crew 9, fourth crew 2) group size will have a significant effect on your roo experience. We've had an awesome time every year, but the smaller groups tend to stick together better, 6+ is impossible to keep together during the day (like herding cats). When we had our bigger group (or picked up extra folks along the way) we always ended up breaking up and spending latenight in singles or pairs. That being said, the bigger groups make for a much better campsite late night and in the AM. It's all fantastic, but if you are trying to catch quality time with your people (roo is like a reunion weekend for us) a larger group may be tough. Just my two cents.

I don't think you could do five people in a minivan plus individual supplies, food, shelter makings, sleeping bags, etc, unless you are all very low maintenance individuals who will not be at camp much. There's just not much room for storage behind that back seat. Are any of these people female? That may factor. Also, if you take two cars, you get double the camping space. Just make sure you are right behind the other car going in the gates. Tell the people directing traffic that you are part of a caravan. They will help if you ask nicely.

Also, if you are part of a group of five...
Others will not want to see some things you will want to. You will not want to see things other people will want to see. You all will want to see some things that will conflict with each other chronologically. You will all get tired and extremely hot, but at different times.
My advice is to never feel obligated to stay in a certain place or with a certain group. If necessary, have a talk with your crew beforehand. Let them know that you will not always be together every second. It's hard to find people in centeroo sometimes, and cell phones are sometimes low on power or lost. Sometimes people are not in a frame of mind where they will answer or even have their phone on or with them. Don't go to roo with anyone you may have to babysit, for that matter. It only comes once a year, and you have to be a little selfish sometimes, without being negligent.
we had 68 in 27 cars last year. Great mornings. Good use of space. Lots of sharing - so nobody ever went with out something they forgot. Plus, lots of people to always watch the camp site. At the start of this someone said the key thing - claim space the MOMENT you park your vehicle. Be nice but claim space. Put up chairs, put down a tarp, land a cooler, start putting up a tent. Do this and you will have the space you want. Then, with in 10 minutes - say hi to everyone around you and offer them a beer, water, smile, beef jerky or handful of crackers.

I rolled with 2 the first year in '07. The guys next to us, where 4 or 5... in one car. I believe they had 2 one person tents and 1 4-person tent. It was their second year going so maybe they had a hidden clue that I couldn't tell u, but it is doable.
The second year, went VIP with 4... we took 2 cars and had two spots which was more than plenty of room. This year is the same group but will only take one SUV this year.

are you serious dozer, you drove in with a caravan on 27 cars?! or are you saying you met everyone around you
oh last year there was a camp close to us with a white van that had the dharma symbol from lost i guess? i dont watch it but thats what my friends were saying its from. and a flag with the same symbol. they had a huuge setup i never really ventured over too close. wasnt ready to go to the island yet or anything
