I suppose I could ref if Handgun & Sadie both want to play. I've got a busy week at work in the boss' absence, but I don't anticipate that being a big problem since games start slow.
Aren't there some new rules that need to be hammered out before this game gets going?

Kdogg, no one really gave me much input on the rules-- and the ones that did agreed..
I think a rule needs to be created that makes the previously killed popular vote victim write the death story of the next killed popular vote. I think the posting after death rule basically needs to state that it doesn't happen, at all if it relates to gameplay.
The nulling vote thing shouldn't be a real issue-- it wasn't in the last game, or any other game I've played. I think those are two rules [in the basic form] that need to be created/edited.
[Kdogg, would you want to ref? Just because everyone else who was/is interested it also interested in playing, but you've said you'd sit out if you don't ref, so we wouldn't lose a player if you decided to ref. Although, I think this game is going to be easier to find players then last round.. thank goodness.]
I am afraid my sense of humor is too twisted to play this game well. I would only annoy kdogg with my fabricated tales of woe. I just can't take it too seriously.
Welcome to the whichever numbered game of Mafia that this may be!
In the small, friendly music community of Bonnaroo, a crafty Mafia have infiltrated the population. Every night these Mafiosi decide amongst themselves who to ruthlessly assassinate. At the beginning of each morning, people learn that one of their own has been killed.
Every day, the population gathers to discuss whom they think is a member of the Mafia. There is a vote, and the one with the majority is executed. The Townspeople must do this in order to clean Bonnaroo of the Mafia and restore its peaceful vibe. However, if the Mafia are able, through disrupting the votes and performing their assassinations, to eliminate Townspeople to the point that they are in the majority, they will rule Bonnaroo forever. Thus, the Townspeople's great hope is the Inspector. This is a secret figure, known only to him or herself, that has inside information on the identity of the Mafiosi. S/he can covertly use this information to influence the votes towards the Mafiosi. But s/he better watch his/her step, because if the Mafia gets wind it will be lights out. Good luck.
Signed,
Bonnaroo Referee
----------------------
Clarification of rules:
1) The referee randomly chooses from the 11 players three Mafiosi and one Inspector. All the rest are Townspeople. Each person is informed of their part via PM, and are not allowed to share that information with each other except in this thread, the official Mafia game thread. The Mafia are informed of one another's identity, and they are allowed to converse among themselves via PM.
2) The Inspector is informed of his/her part, and also of the identity of one randomly chosen Mafia player.
3) Each day a vote is held for the player to be eliminated. For online play, deliberation and voting is combined; thus, you can vote and explain yourself in the same post. Every player is free to change their vote at any point up until the last vote is in and the Ref declares that voting is closed. The ref will then post the final tally, and announce which player is eliminated and how they died. Then will begin the following night.
4) During the night the Mafia decide on the player they want to eliminate (assassinate), and inform the ref via PM. Once the ref receives this info, it is posted here in the thread, the player is eliminated, and the following day begins.
5) Likewise during the night the Inspector will PM the ref and guess one person who is the Mafia. Goddess will respond with a 'yes' or 'no'.
6) Play continues until all the Mafia have been killed (Townspeople win), or the Mafia outnumber the Townspeople (Mafia win).
7) It will not be revealed, until the end of the game, when a Mafia player or the Inspector have been eliminated.
8) Players who have been eliminated are still welcome to post in this thread, but are asked to not say anything leading to any knowledge, suspicions or opinions you might have.
Kdogg, would you want to ref? Just because everyone else who was/is interested it also interested in playing, but you've said you'd sit out if you don't ref, so we wouldn't lose a player if you decided to ref. Although, I think this game is going to be easier to find players then last round.
I can, but like I said, there are rule changes to be addressed. I could just write up drafts before the game starts. If they need to be changed later, we can change them later.
I've also been kicking around another idea, one that I found while I was researching this game in Mike's absence. That would be more of a variation than a rule change, per se... but I did notice one of those sites say you could split the investigative role in two. Example: instead of one Inspector, one Sheriff and one Deputy - the two of them having roughly the same purpose, but with the Sheriff having more power than the Deputy. I would re-find those sites and post more info now, but I'm on my way out the door for work.

^^kdogg, I think you make a great ref and you're perfectly capable of coming up with fair rules. If we try and they they don't work out, you guys could always change them.
That sheriff/deputy thing sounds like it could be interesting, you'll have to let us know what you find out.

I've played games of mafia where there are mafia, an inspector (or sheriff, same thing) and then also a NURSE. The nurse gets to choose somebody each night, and if the mafia chose to "whack" that person, the person would be revived. Of course, the nurse doesn't know who the mafia chose, he or she chooses randomly.
I think that might be a good role to add...plus it would keep the game going a little longer
I am afraid my sense of humor is too twisted to play this game well. I would only annoy kdogg with my fabricated tales of woe. I just can't take it too seriously.
You guys have fun!
And handgun you did a great job last time.
Oh I think that you should play. If for no other reason than that I enjoy your fabricated tales of woe. ;D

handgun, yes, the nurse is a role that is known only to that player and to the ref. Of course, the mafia can whack the nurse just like they can whack the inspector. The nurse is also *sort of* at an advantage because if they are successful at saving someone, then they know they aren't mafia...it's kind of like having 2 inspectors.
Here's what I'm thinking about some various rules:
Rule #8: I don't know if it will hold, but if I'm referee I am definitely explicitly prohibiting dead players quoting anything once their time has come.
New Rule Draft: The player voted dead during during Day X is responsible for the death story for the player voted dead during Day X+1. Day 1 death story suggestions are welcome from players, but is the responsibility of the Referee in the absence of submissions.
Mafia have to submit death stories. Handgun & I thought there should be a rule making the Townspeople similarly responsible. I don't know about the whole X+1 crap. It was shorter and more to the point than I could swing with words. I'm open to suggestions on altering this one before we go with it.
As for roles: I didn't find too many specifics yet. I just recall seeing a site mention there could be sheriff/deputy instead of one investigative role. It also mentioned nurses, multiple mafias and other possibilities.
Here's a helpful place to start: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_(party_game) I thought I'd seen the sheriff/deputy mentioned on the mafiascum external link, but now I don't think that was it. I'll keep looking.
If we're going to super-size this game, I think more players means more possibilities. I'd definitely like to hear some feedback. In the meantime, I'm too corny at the moment to be decisive about anything.

^^ I was thinking if we added the nurse, we could add a 4th mafia member and make the game 13 players versus 11. How does that sound?
And I think the rules you have are good, and I do agree that no dead player should be allowed to quote themselves. Make it an official rule and I'll be sure to stand by it when I ref.
I figured the Sheriff could basically be the Inspector, with the only addition of knowing the Deputy's name at the onset.
The Deputy would be informed of the Sheriff's guesses, but would have to ask about Sheriff's identity every night before they could converse privately. Of course, the Deputy would get promoted to Sheriff the day following the prior Sheriff's death. No Deputy to take promoted Deputy's place, though. At least that's how I envision it.
I'm curious about this Nurse role. That protects one player from harm per night, right? Couldn't that throw off the "every round starts with an odd number" aspect of the game?

well don't drop out for me! though that is sweet. im a bit nervous with all these new rules.. hopefully someone else will join. if not.. i'll get in on the next!

Okay-- so the Sheriff would replace our current Inspector role?
Because while the Nurse would be awesome-- I agree that it could throw the odd number thing off if the Nurse happened to get lucky and save someone. From what I understood, it would be very difficult in the first rounds for the Nurse to save anyone.. but if the Nurse survived-- it would benefit. The Sheriff would know who the Deputy was but not the other way around? I'd almost think we should keep it from the Sheriff as well, so that the two couldn't converse without the ref's knowledge.. that could be a disadvantage to the mafia. I don't think the Sheriff should guess, just the Deputy guessing the role of his 'partner'.
And I think we should add two more players since we're pretty sure that we'll have an added inspector role of sorts. Would we make that second added player mafia or townsperson?
But with the question of the odd number-- I say we change the Inspector role to Sheriff and add the Deputy.
