Meg, if you really want to play, you did ask first. Go ahead.
Nope - kdogg knows I was just harassing him - work is kicking my ass this month and next month doesn't look any better - I would not be a really effective player at this point
Meg was first for #13, but doesn't sound too enthused.
I think it should go to Steve. He did get whacked too early last game. Funny story about that...
Oh yeah...? Spill it.
After fishingmaniac got voted off that first day, the three of us mafia agreed to whack Sammy. Carpe offered to submit the story. I woke up the next morning to discover Carpe had submitted the story, but killed Steve instead of Sammy. Shortly after that, he made the initial day two vote for me. That didn't sit well with his associates. He had to go...
Extra mafia? Extra Inspector? New semi-Inspector? New Nurse? Somethin' else?
The nurse seems more intriguing than expanding the Inspector role, but also seems more difficult logistically.
This bit from the Wiki article also looks intriguing, now that I'm taking another look: The Vigilante is an "innocent" who kills every night, in his own night-time phase, in some variations, having a limited "bullet" supply for the entire game. Could we somehow balance adding a Nurse with also adding a Vigilante?

I really wanna add a nurse, it usually worked out with our in-person games of mafia....and we never really specifically had to have a odd number, I've played with both even and odd numbers of people and never really had trouble.

Absolute proof that some people take their games waaaaaaay to seriously. Mafia might have won that game if you'd accepted it as an honest mistake and hadn't turned on me. Was it worth it?
"We're no longer called Sonic Death Monkey. We're on the verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive, but just for tonight, we are Barry Jive and his Uptown Five. "
I've thought about it, and I think it's only fair to throw this out for feedback before I call it a night.
We will definitely have Mafia, Townspeople and one Inspector. In addition to the regular roles, I want to try out two other roles that caught my interest while researching.
Vigilante (innocent) Has the ability to kill a player, whom s/he believes to be guilty, at night during odd-numbered rounds.
Bodyguard (innocent) Chooses one player, whom s/he believes to be innocent, to protect each night. If the guarded player is attacked, Bodyguard dies while guarded player lives. This will be announced in the thread for all to see, along the lines of "During the night, (Bodyguard) sacrificed his life thwarting an attack on (guarded player.)" It will not be announced whether the attack came from the Mafia or the Vigilante. Can guard self instead of another player. May not protect a player more than once.
I think this will make for an interesting game. I can't guarantee every round will begin/end with odd numbers of players, but I think we will be all right as long as we enter the final two rounds with exactly five players. I can't specifically tell you how because we're not playing yet, but I've got at least three scenarios figured out for that.
In a nutshell: 7 Townspeople 3 Mafia 1 Inspector 1 Bodyguard 1 Vigilante
Is everyone cool with this? I'm ready to work with this if everyone's fine with this arrangement.
I'm still confused about the Nurse. Is that basically like what I'm suggesting with the Bodyguard? They were both under the "protective roles" category in the Wiki article.
Bodyguard doesn't have to die, necessarily. I just thought about how long the game could last otherwise, and decided to add that myself.
I also got the impression reading the Wiki article that the Doctor character could be killed protecting someone. I figured that would make it fair game for a Bodyguard.
Plus Mike, who I missed when I was updating the roster. So yes, we have thirteen.
I have to be up in six hours and I haven't PMed roles yet. I hope to have the game up and running after work tomorrow. Probably sometime between 4-5pm Central.

If we are voting on the new rules, I like the vigilante but not so much the bodyguard. Here's why.
When playing this game every weekend my freshman year in college, we would play with multiple mafiosi, a cop and a doctor. The doctor, while an enjoyable diversion, was largely useless, simply because of the sociology of the game. In short, when people play this game, they play completely selfishly and constantly for their own benefit, NOT the perceived (and greater) benefit of the collective. This isn't a critique, just a fact. But what that meant was that the doctor almost always chose to protect him/herself. If we had a bodyguard, I don't see them ever choosing to save another person at the risk of being killed. I don't think I would.
Ultimately, I say it should be up to whomever is reffing this round. They choose the roles, we fill 'em, and then we can get on with the game!
I thought about that Nurse/Bodyguard role a little more today. I think I like calling it a Nurse better, plus the role has its proponents in the thread.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized it's not fair to the Nurse or the attacker to randomly kill one of them. I thought about having them do some kind of private face-off (coin flip, perhaps?) but that started to seem needlessly complicated. I don't like the thought of someone's role requiring them to die on another's behalf. I had already suggested that the Nurse not be able to guard the same player twice. Hopefully, that will avoid the "always protecting themselves" problem.
Here are the new rules/roles I'm going to include. I'm going with them, unless I happen to get feedback while I'm PMing everyone roles.
Rule 8 addition: Deceased players may not quote anything said prior to the posting of their death story.
Not quite Rule 9, maybe more like Suggestion 1?: Townspeople are encouraged to write death stories for those voted dead during Daytime rounds, to be submitted to the Referee. The mafia kills at night and gives their own stories, and the Townspeople should similarly carry their share of this burden.
New Roles: Vigilante (innocent) Has the ability to kill a player, whom s/he believes to be guilty, at night during odd-numbered rounds.
Bodyguard (innocent) Chooses one player, whom s/he believes to be innocent, to protect each night. Can guard self instead of another player. May only protect each player one Night per game. In the event of a blocked attack, the referee will inform the players the following Day that an attempted attack was stopped during the Night. No details will be given to identify the attacker, protector or target.
Do these sound good? I'm stepping out for a cigarette, and if I don't hear anything I'm moving on to role PMs & posting complete rules.
I am going over the thread to pull up everyone's profile so I can send PMs.
I noticed that Handgun put him on the roster, but I don't see anything in this thread or the last three pages of Mafia 12 that specifically show him stating a desire to play.
Handgun, you put his name on the list but I didn't see a post. Did he ask you in PM or something? How did he get on the list?
I searched all of this thread & Mafia 12 trying to find Rooconteur's name. I didn't. I sent a PM to Rooconteur to see what's going on, but no response yet. I'm not sending him a role without some kind of confirmation he indeed signed up to play. Handgun, you put his name on the list... but I don't see him saying he's playing anywhere I looked. Help me out here - what's going on?
Game is ready to go, but won't begin until this is figured out.

I've been at work.
He must have deleted his post, I don't know why.. but he posted wanting to play-- I remember this specifically because I couldn't spell his name right and had to go back and check his post to make sure it was spelled correctly before I posted the roster. It dumbfounds me why he would delete his post.

Please clarify: in the event that the bodyguard protects someone, does the bodyguard then die?
Also, are the bodyguard and vigilante each required to choose people for their respective tasks, or can they ever "pass" a round? (My suggestion would be that they are required.)

This game can already be confusing the way it is. I vote to not add in new characters. I liked the game how it was. But alas, that is just my opinion and I'm open to playing how the group decides.
Unless this Rooconteur situation works itself out, I'm going to have to do something different... it's not like I just want to start with 12 players. I know he read my PM, he just hasn't responded. Little quacker.
Either he's in, or I have to do another random role draw again. I also need a solution to the 12/13 player situation. After all, I said the only way I was accepting the 12th was if we had a 13th.
