Ranked preference voting gives you multiple choices. Instead of one vote voters instead rank, say, their top three choices in order.

If your first choice is eliminated (as is the case when you don't vote for one of the people in the tie) your second choice replaces it.

Say we're voting on Bugs Bunny vs. Mickey Mouse vs. Spongebob Squarepants, and it's a tie between Bugs and Mickey.
Spongebob is eliminated, so we'd use the Spongebob voters' second choices in determining the outcome.
Just a faster, though not very often used, means of conducting an election.

Edit: knowing others' second choices might alter the way people play the game and vote, though...
