Okay this is my first time starting a thread here... so be gentle. Did some searching, couldn't find a thread on it.
I was wondering about carrying a cell - do most people do it? I have a few and I wasn't planning on taking my iphone (since I'd be afraid of losing it/breaking it), but I have some old unlocked Nokias and I'm thinking that may be the way I should go. Am I crazy for doing this? I'm going with a large group and it wouldn't be an awful idea to have one on me, and I'll have access to power since my friend is doing an RV. Am I crazy? I can't wait to go... so stoked!!

Go with the old nokia, I wouldnt bring an iphone either because I would lose it, you will have service and it is a great way to contact someone when you are lost in a crowd of 80000 people..
Actually, another question. I have a nice Nikon DSLR camera I was thinking of bringing. Is that safe to take with me? Is it common for people to do that?

A call phone would be a good idea, especially if you're going in a decent sized group. This way you can text each other back and forth about meeting spots and what not. Beware though if you have AT&T service the signal out there is pure poop. I don't think I've heard of anyone else having problems, but I have heard many complaints about AT&T out there, and our AT&T/Cingulair cell phones were pretty much useless to us last year as well.
Also, I brought my digital camera last year, although it's pretty much just a cheap consumer grade camera, and had no problems at all. Just make sure to keep it in a Ziploc baggie or something so it doesn't get wet, be careful where you set it down, and just be smart about it.

In the past I have just brought a small camera but this year I am bringing my Nikon P80 because it has a terrific zoom on it and takes awesome pictures

I'm bringing three cameras. My D60 for pics close to the camp site, my Canon 3sis for shows, and my nikon point and shoot to keep on me at all times. Def bringing ziploc baggies into Centeroo for protection tho.

^ Ziplock bags will save your life on the Farm. It protects from the rain and the dust.
Also, I'll second the poster above who said AT&T service was crap! It took me 45 minutes to get a call thru early in the am. Texting or calling during the day is pretty much useless.
^^ i brought my cell phone every year till last year when mine fell in the porta pot right before MMJ. lets just say i went thru an ENTIRE bottle of hand sanitizer. Plastic bags my help...
Be aware that there is lens length limit. If I remember correctly you can't have a lens over 3 inches in length inside Centeroo. So no 80mm-200mm f/2.8s or anything of the such.

I lost my shitty phone last year on Thursday night. It fell out of my pocket somewhere and was gone forever. This year I have a much nicer phone that I care a whole lot about not losing, so therefore it will go, but will be locked and turned off in the car until I need to use it to make a call.

Last year was much easier to get a call thru than years prior. I have AT&T - I don't know if they improved their service in the area or what but it was better. I think the problem with AT&T is that they use GSM towers which handle calls and traffic differently than CDMA towers (i.e. Verizon), that coupled with the sheer number of people using GSM phones. People with CDMA phones seem to have better luck getting calls to connect. It is easier to get a text out than a call regardless.
FWIW I looked at AT&T's coverage map in the area and it looks okay this year.
Thank God! I just switched to AT&T and got irked for awhile there. I guess worst case scenario I can tell people to contact me online during my vacation and check my email at the computers (I go to school and work summers). Thanks for the info man. Karma.
I have AT&T and while I did have a bit of trouble getting my phone calls through (no problem with texts), I had no more trouble than anyone else in my group who has Verizon and TMobile.
I am however worried about taking my iPhone.. I know I should switch back to my old phone or use a prepaid one I still have sitting around. But I feel like it would be more of a hassle than I feel like dealing with to set it up.

Gross... No way I could use a phone if it fell in 20 tons of duke! I could see it if you were just getting the phone out for the SIM card... But still... nasty!

I think that's the best course of action and that's what I always do. I never worry too much about losing my friends (it's not like I won't see them back at the camp site). I do, however, have to call in and check in with the old lady at least once a day, so a phone is necessary. Just keep it off and in the car. If you lose your friends, make some new ones. I took my Blackberry last year, and kept it in my backpack (in a small ziplock with some paper towels) and never had a problem with it...It was cool to be able to take some real-time concert/friends pictures and send them out to Facebook, etc.
Last year I had AT&T and definitley didn't have any luck making calls, typically because it was way too loud even if I did get through. Texts I had zero issues with and was a lot easier then talking anyway. It does look like there will be an iPhone app made, so I am def bringing mine!
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.
i'm going to bring mine but keep it away unless i need it. i'm at roo, the rest of the world can pretty much just wait. i'll use it to see where the boy is if we get split up, but i have a feeling that'll be mostly fine without a cell phone.
i'm excited about the roo app, i hope the wireless is good enough to use my ipod for it.

I actually had great cell phone communication throughout the weekend last year on a single charge with a verizon phone. I actually left it on in my car by accident and I was really worrying about it overheating. Turns out, I came back to my car after about 5 hours of it being in there and I received a message that said "ur phone has been shut off due to excess heat". Needless to say I was really happy to find out that my phone had avoided the heat problem and that it continued to work all weekend on the same charge. Now, I only used it for texting mon ami and calling my mother once a day everyday but it worked well.
