So me and my friends were planning on road tripping it down, but then we found out our high school graduation is the day before Bonnaroo, so it seems our only option is to fly (we're in Boston, it's a ton of miles to 'roo). Will we be at a disadvantage because of packing restrictions? It seems like it'd be tough to bring food and a cooler as well as tents, tent fans, canopies, etc. Is there a list of only the essential camping supplies somewhere? I'd love to be able to just pack a car, but it seems like this is our only option.
I flew last year and am flying in again this year with two friends. The major restriction is that you have to pay per bag you check with the majority of airlines and they cant be over 50 pounds. I was able to get everything I needed in one bag. This included a small hiking tent, food, clothes, sleeping bag, snacks, a tent fan, and some water. Since your going as a group you can share space and get everything you need with some exceptions. A canopy may be a bit big I don't remeber the size restrictions. Large amounts of food are hard to transport and a cooler and ice near impossible. Alot of people seem to think its very hard to fly with all the supplies but I thought it was easy. Added bonus no waiting in lines going in if you take the shuttle.
When packing use a scale. My buddy and I were able to bring all of our camping supplies, tent and a canopy without exceeding the bag limits or 50 lbs. You don't really need a cooler that badly at 'Roo, I mean drinking beer in the scorching sun is never a good idea. Just some plastic bottles and whatever else is what you need in that department. Then with camping gear keep it minimal. If you don't have a car to put your belongings in, then you don't want to bring anything expensive or fancy. I flew in the past two years. '07 was totally fine, but in '08 our tent got slashed (locked it up) and some of my buddy's stuff got stolen. All you'll really need is your tent, canopy (SO convenient), clothes, cash, fan if you want and some food (breakfast/energy bars, beef jerky, etc. work really well). You should be fine taking your stuff in.
In '07 my buddies and I had to fly out on Sunday to get to school on Monday in order to graduate. Bonnaroo was the sweetest graduation gift I could imagine. Enjoy it!
Food wise non-parishables arn't had to carry and a few of you should be able to have stuff for breakfast and lunch. I suggest eating one meal there a day to save space (plus theres lots of good food). You can't have fires and you can't bring propane or buthane on a plane so you can only bring stuff that doesn't need heat. Last year I brought jerky, trailmix, granola bars, and crackers. This stuff provided nurishment between a small meal I would buy from the campgroundvendors and a larger meal I would eat in centeroo at night. This worked well for me and cost less than I thought it might.

Here's a couple of things to keep in mind... First, if you are traveling with more than one person, take more than one bag... if you try to put everything into one bag for economy and you go over the weight limit, they will charge you - even if the bag is for two people... Not really fair, but reality. Second, the local grocery stores and Walmarts sell those cheapo foam coolers. Make a stop along the way to load up on groceries/drinks and use a disposable cooler. If you are taking the airport shuttle, you can probably find a ride to a local grocery store from a camping neighbor. it's easy to get in and out of camp after Friday afternoon. Last, even if you are flying in, invest in a couple of cheap beach chairs at Walmart in Manchester or Murfreesboro. They cost about $8 and you can leave them behind, but you will be eternally greatfull that you had a place to rest your ass for the weekend. Have fun and be good, children....
