Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a New York City-based alternative rock band. The band consists of lead singer Karen O, drummer Brian Chase, and guitarist Nick Zinner. In 2000 they formed a trio, and were later joined by second guitarist Imaad Wasif in 2006 for touring purposes. The band has recorded three studio albums; the first, Fever to Tell, was released in 2003. The second, Show Your Bones, was released in 2006 and was named the second best album of the year by NME. Their third studio album, It's Blitz!, was released on March 31, 2009 in the USA and on April 6, 2009 in the rest of the world. The new album was incredibly highly anticipated. Since the album leaked on Feb. 23. the digital release date was moved up to Mar. 10 and the cd release date was bumped up a couple weeks as well.
History
Formation and first EP
Karen O and Brian Chase first met as students at Oberlin College in Ohio in the late '90s, where Chase was a jazz student at the conservatory. Karen then transferred to New York University, and while in New York met Zinner in a local bar, where they formed an "instant connection". The two formed an acoustic duo called "Unitard", but they went electric after being inspired by Ohio's legendary avant-punk scene. After the drummer they recruited initially bowed out, Chase joined the line-up and decided to form a punk band similar to the "trashy, punky, grimy" art student groups that Karen had left behind in Ohio.[1] The band wrote a slew of songs at their first rehearsal and soon wound up supporting the Strokes and the White Stripes, earning a significant buzz for their arty and garage punk scene. In late 2001, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their self-titled debut EP, which they recorded with Boss Hog's Jerry Teel, on their own Shifty label.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP (2001)
The first EP was a very raw sound. Almost hardcore punk. The band still plays some of these songs live and they are very entertaining at the least.
In 2003, the band released their first complete album, Fever to Tell, which received several strong critical reviews and sold more than 750,000 copies worldwide. The album's third single, "Maps", received significant airplay on alternative radio. The video for their 2004 single "Y Control" was directed by acclaimed director Spike Jonze. In October 2004, the band released their first DVD, Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow. The DVD included a concert filmed at The Fillmore in San Francisco, all of the band's music videos to date, and various interviews.
Fever To Tell is what made me fall in love with the band. It is such a high energy and fun album. But it is also packed with emotion. The sound is hard to describe, great, simple, old school riffs and drumming with Karen O’s unique vocal and lyrical style. I absolutely love the entire album start to finish, but here are just a few.

The band released a live dvd in 2004, Tell Me What Rockers To Swallow. I think this is the best showcase of the band that you can get. You just have to see this band live to get the full effect. It is an energy filled, fun, crazy experience. The dvd features songs from their first album, Fever To Tell, their First EP, the Is Is EP that was to come later, one song (Cheated Hearts) from Show Your Bones, before its release and a few of their wonderful B-sides. Karen O is at her insane front-woman best on this one, with her many crazy stage antics and drama.
Their second album, Show Your Bones, was released on March 27–28, 2006. Although critically successful, this was a rough time for the band. There was lots of fighting during the recording and the band almost broke up. The album is quite different than the previous album. It definitely has a more mellow approach and attempt at conventional song writing.
An EP, titled Is Is, was released on July 24, 2007. It includes 5 previously unreleased songs and a short film, which was recorded and filmed at the GlassLands Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. The songs were written in 2004, during the Fever To Tell tour, and performed live often. These are some of my favorite songs. The sound is closer to Fever To tell, like a lot of the b-sides they recorded from that time, they were just as good as the album.

It's Blitz! (2009)
The latest album by the band was released in March 2009 and is called It's Blitz![12] The band says the album sounds different from their previous ones but will "still sound like Yeah Yeah Yeahs". The sound is indeed very different. Even more mellow than the previous album. Karen O stated in an interview that she wanted guitarist Nick Zinner to NOT play guitar on the album. Therefore he had to learn how to play synth and piano for the album. It is still a dancy album, but in a completely different way now. More like something you can dance to in a club, not a rock show.
The band currently has a bunch of festival shows other than Bonnaroo booked. They are also appearing at Coachella, Sasquatch, Werchter, Roskilde, All Points West, Reading and Leeds and are also rumored to be at Lollapalooza. Their live shows are very much high energy and fun. Karen is known for her crazy on stage antics, she is a wild woman on the stage. The band is tight and will definitely have your body moving.
The band made their first performance on Saturday Night Live on Apr. 11. Here are the performances:
Recently, David Pajo, of Zwan/Slint/Tortoise/Papa M fame David Pajo has been added to the band as a touring guitarist(he actually played the keys, with Zinner on guitar on SNL last night). He will be with the band on their upcoming tour. Myspace

Eh. Not bad, I guess. I would've included their live shows, and where to start, but it's not bad, since you mentioned you were working on it when the site went down. They're probably my second favorite band, and they're just so unique. I'll do a little write up, since I've got time.
The name comes from New York slang, just saying, yeah yeah yeah.
Their live show Is very similar to the White Stripes live show, it's never the same twice. Karen will never wear the same outfit twice (and she wears some crazy outfits), and they'll most likely never play the same setlist twice. The show is very energetic, with Karen dancing all over the place, her unique dance. She lets people have the mic and sing the words to the song. Sometimes they'll just slow it down and do an instrumental jam. And of course you never know what Karen will do. She may eat on stage, she may drink beer on stage (that's probably gonna happen actually lol), she may strip on stage.
Their lyrics Unique, incredible, catchy.
Also, if you like guitar gods, you must listen just for Nick Zinner. He is incredible.
Where I would start: If you like dance music: It's Blitz! If you like punk music: Fever to Tell If you like alt-rock: Show Your Bones
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

Other than that, good job.
i'm actually going to add some of what you said. thanks. i tried to talk a lot about the live show. but if you can help me by finding some of the videos that show her doing crazy things that would be good. i know there are some on tell me what rockers to swallow.
Nice job sangreal. This and the Springsteen one are ones that I really want to spend some time with the links to familiarize myself with music that I don't know.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs In Review Yeah Yeah Yeahs have revealed they're surprised they're still together after nine years. The group, who recently released third album 'It's Blitz!', didn't think they would be together for so long. The band's guitarist Nick Zinner said: "That's really overwhelming when you think about it [being together for nearly a decade] like that. Just in the sense that a lot of everyone's favorite bands are only around for four or five years - so ten years feels like an absolute eternity." He added: "I never ever ever thought we'd still be playing music nine years later."
The band also discussed 'It's Blitz!', which, like their first two, has been co-produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek. When describing the LP, lead singer Karen O said: "Its not maturity, its wisdom in a way – the music feels more ecstatic without feeling as confrontational because that's where a lot of the energy came before." She added: "There are ballads on this record, and a fragility that I think also is like wisdom, and only arrives after feeling a sense of comfort in ourselves."

from what i saw on youtube and from that recording their energy did not seem to be very high. maybe because they are playing so early in the day. hope they play later at roo.

I was thinking the same thing. I miss the Karen O that would go crazy on stage. It really seems like she's putting more effort into singing rather than yelling. I saw their performance on Fallon (finally playing Heads will Roll the best song on the album in my opinion,) and she was absolutely winded by the end.
Hopefully she gets that stuff sorted out and by the time Bonnaroo rolls around she can handle doing a 90 minute high energy set.
Dude, I'm just glad they played in the morning at like noon or eleven. Actually, who the hell knows what time it was. Lord knows I sure as heck didn't sleep the night before, which made the show even better. They were perfect, absolutely perfect, hands down the Yeah Yeah Yeah's were the best performance of the year... An unbelievable time, absolutely unbelievable, go ahead, bring em' back, I dare you. They don't have just fans any more, but for real under ground followers.

YYYs were one of my favorite shows of 09, but they looked like the sun was killing them. Like animal collective (but not as much so), I think this harmed their set a bit. I'd love to see them back in a later slot. If only they'd pump out a new album
