"They asked us for a list of dream producers so we made one: Prince, Barack Obama, Nigel Godrich, and 'Not Sheryl Crow.'"
MGMT (formerly pronounced Management) consists of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, graduates of Wesleyan University in Conneticut where they honed their skills blaring their own distinct version of the ghostbusters theme for hours on end.
This is the origin story of MGMT, a band who has gone on to play at some of the biggest festivals around the world including Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapallooza, and tour with everyone from Beck to Of Montreal.
ORACULAR SPECTACULAR: is the major label debut by the band. It revolves around an incorporating brand of psychedelic pop that shape shifts through vastly different genres and musical landscapes.
1. Time To Pretend 2. Weekend Wars 3. The Youth 4. Electric Feel 5. Kids 6. 4th Dimensional Transition 7. Pieces of What 8. Of Moons, Birds, and Monsters 9. The Handshake 10. Future Reflections
The album was produced by Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann.
other MGMT material includes the Time to Pretend EP as well as the Metanoia single (a 15 minute opus that covers a lot of the ground MGMT attempt to cover)
LIVE SHOW: MGMT's live show is more band oriented than some might imagine by listening to Oracular Spectacular. They tour as a 5 piece adding a bassist, drumer, and lead guitarist as Andrew and Ben play guitar and synth, respectively. They claimed to not have a great live show as of last year when they were just breaking in but they produced a great party atmosphere without much engaging with the crowd or extended jamming, which proves IMO their potential to be a consistently exciting live act.
Considering how long they have been working on their live act and the fact that Bonnaroo will be their first show this summer, i would expect great things from MGMT at Bonnaroo 2009.
In addition to playing Bonnaroo, they are also scheduled to appear this year at All Points West in August and the V Festival.
MGMT also plans to have their next album finished by June, with a release in the fall.
Interesting Fact- Andrew and Ben have both attended Bonnaroo in the past. Most notably in 2003 where they enjoyed Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Sonic Youth, and the Flaming Lips. Andrew also apparently had a bad mushroom trip in a port-o-john. Ah, the circle of life!

Thanks for the vids dto. u da man. its interesting to see them with a band. it certainly adds more to it, ie the kids video is kinda lame without the band. It's also intersting to watch them at this festival and see how different the crowd is than at roo last year. that may be day vs. night.
