So I am one of those guys who has been in a lifelong pursuit to grill the perfect burger. I have come very close, but I realized what it is missing. The perfect burger needs to be cooked in the dirt of Bonnaroo! I plan on staying in Tent only, and digging a pit to cook burgers in (I will have plenty feel free to stop by and try one, I'll be in or near camp inforoo).
In the process of lighting charcoal it creates a descent flame maybe a foot or so for a while as you probably know. Is this something that Roo security staff will frown on? Will I have enough space to not worry about burning down the neighbor's EZ-UP? What are the rules regarding grilling with charcoal? Any info will be appreciated, or point me in the right direction to a post that most likely already answers this. Thanks.

I saw someone who had dug a pit one year. While they were cooking sheriffs pulled up on four wheelers and doused the fire with buckets of water, on the food and all. I didn't stick around to see what happened after that.

Yeah, the dudes who were cooking looked pissed, and I didn't want to see whatever badness might happen, so I kept on walking.
We took a charcoal grill to the first three or four Roos, but stopped because it starts to feel like work to use it by Friday afternoon or so. Another friend brought one in 06 and it was really nice having burgers at the camp that year.
I would suggest dousing the coals with water every time you finish cooking, because wooks are often not very careful when they stomp through people's campsites and you don't want to come back to find a tipped grill has melted your tent.
You could prob bring something like this if you were so inclined......
We brought one one year and then never used it. Kinda a waste, but it was a nice thought. Seems like they'd be ok cause they're contained and off the ground.
We got in trouble last year on the first night for our charcoal grill. We started it and about 5 minutes later we had about 5 safety and security rush over and told us we couldn't use it.
All worked out fine because I had a little Coleman propane grill that did the job.

I would have had to look at them and tell them to leave me alone

What will we be allowed to bring into the campgrounds? (Coolers, food, beer, kegs, stoves, etc.) You can bring coolers with a consumable amount of provisions into the camping area; however, they cannot be brought into the Centeroo / concert field. SMALL grills and camping stoves will be allowed. No kegs, No pig roasts, no 55-gallon drums!
NO OPEN FIRES WILL BE PERMITTED.
PLEASE follow these instructions if you are planning on using a grill. You can use gas/propane fuel sources or charcoal, but scavenging for wood on site will NOT be permitted. The fire must be entirely contained and off the ground. Air quality is a concern. Please keep the fires as small as possible and extinguish them as soon as you are finished. When you are done cooking with charcoal, put it out with water before going into the show or going to sleep or leaving your camp, rather than letting it burn out over time. In any case, DO NOT DUMP COALS ON THE GROUND (ever) or in the trash until they are entirely cool. After the coals are COMPLETELY DEAD, dispose of them properly as garbage.
That portable gas grill looks convenient but I'm not sure if its worth all the effort if I don't use charcoal. (ya I'm that guy) And whatever I bring I will have to carry to Tent Only from BFE since I will probably be getting there early.
Thanks for finding the section of rules that state charcoal is allowed, but if security staff doesn't think it's allowed than It doesn't really matter that much. Are the staff usually pretty reasonable? If I show them the rules are they likely to leave me alone?
The night we got in trouble was Wed night around midnight or so when everyone is still in a rush getting set up. They told us they seen the smoke from a long ways off. After they left we put it out and used the propane grill but we actually used the charcoal grill a bunch more throughout the weekend and no one said a word. It may all depend on who is working at the time and the mood.
