Agreed...loved the book, loved the Disney movie (watched it the first time I hung out with my funguy friend and gained a whole new appreciation!!), and I'm super excited to see this interpretation...I like most of Depp's and Burton's works, together or apart.
It's funny you brought this up I just discovered this today and also stumbled across this www.imdb.com/title/tt0374853/. It's supposed to be a modern (and more adult) take on Alice In wonderland. This is the most info I could find about it, its an interview with the producer.
Thriller Malice in Wonderland's only female producer Carola Ash talks exclusively to Pretty/Scary about the Alice in Wonderland adaptation and how Mischa Barton was recently dropped in lieu of actress Maggie Grace (Lost, The Fog, Creature Unknown) due to "scheduling conflicts". The 5 week shoot will happen in Northern England this summer with Maggie in the title role instead.
"Malice is a rites of passage road movie with the sexiest female lead since Tomb Raider," says Carola Ash of Future Film Group, who describes the film as "Alice in Wonderland meets Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" with "quite a lot of violence and drug use. We are hoping for a 15 rating in the UK"... Read on for more!
Producer Carola Ash describes the film by saying "Malice in Wonderland takes its inspiration from the internationally loved story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and is the wildest, most contemporary interpretation yet, set in England. Malice is a rites of passage road movie with the sexiest female lead since Tomb Raider. Aimed firmly at a global audience, Malice will tap into and build onto an already extensive awareness of the Lewis Carroll classic, bringing a fresh new perspective to those familiar with the story and an exciting thrill filled adventure for others."
Fans of the original Alice in Wonderland will see their favorite characters contemporized. "All the characters from the book are there, but their names have been changed to present day. Like for example the White Rabbit is Whitey, and he is a hip drug dealer. There will be surreal elements, as opposed to fantasy....The film will be dark, it does have its thriller moments... its gangland UK but its all good fun too."
Aside from Maggie Grace and Danny Dyer (Severance), the cast is not fully complete. "We are still in the casting process. Most of the other actors will be well known faces (all British) but not names that people will recognize, so when you see the movie you will say I have seen him before!" Execs are not worried about any competition with the Sarah Michelle Gellar film American McGee's Alice, which is based on the horror video game of the same name. "As far as I know," says Carola, "that a very different film"
It also doesn't hurt that the American Mcgee's Alice feature is "presently in 'turnaround' from Universal Studios" according to Scott Faye, a producer working in Los Angeles on Alice, who also recently produced (along with Julie Yorn) the feature film adaptation of the video game Max Payne for 20th Century Fox, in an interview on the American McGee website.
"In terms of the realistic chances of seeing the Alice project being produced," continues Scott Faye, "all I can say is that I have invested (along with Julie Yorn and Karen Lauder, my producing partners on the project) a lot of time and effort in this project," and continues to divulge that "Sarah [Michelle gellar] is not currently attached to the project."
It looks like Malice will be underway long before Alice is, and Maggie Grace will be running from the Queen of Hearts early in 2009.

Burton's hit or miss for me. Love Pee Wee, Batman Returns and Sweeney Todd. Beetle Juice, Batman, Ed Wood, Mars Attack and Big Fish are alright. But I hate haTE HATE Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
This looks interesting. Would've liked to see what Gilliam would have done with it, but then he's probably too dark to get the budget Burton will.

If you are interested in "Alice" you should definitly check this out I just wish Ledger could have finished filming. His performance is captivating,as is Tom Waits as The Devil.

i hope alice in wonderland is better than this movie. maybe it would have reached full potential if heath had finished his scenes, but i thought it wasn't anywhere as good as it could have been. i especially didn't like the part when they went through the mirror, so cartoony and stupid.
i looooooove alice and wonderland and have even contemplated getting an alice themed tattoo. i have high hopes for this movie.
So I saw a sneak peak of this last night at an IMAX theatre in 3-D and it's pretty bad.
First off, don't see it in 3-D. You will spend more money for a process Burton and company didn't do a great job pulling off. Anytime the movie goes into motion, everything becomes blurry. The visuals should have been the strength of the film, but the 3-D constantly distracts you from them. So I say, if you're going to go, save yourself a little money and go to a regular screening of the film.
Now, guys...know that this will be what is commonly referred to as a chick flick. This is not a movie that's really for you. Sure, there's some stuff tossed in there that may or may not amuse you. But mostly, this movie involves lots of costume changes, girl problems and is resolved in a manner that makes it play out like a feminist fairy tale. So yeah, my advice is, unless you're going with your gf, move along. This isn't for you.
The movie has nothing to do with Alice in Wonderland. It takes the same characters and plot points and morphs them into a post 9/11 feminist parable set in a weird corner of Middle earth that Lord of the Rings didn't explore. The movie takes all the nonsensical dream like aspects of the story and labels them bad guy or good guy, makes Alice a definitive Keanu Reeves type messiah and even throws in a good white witch for measure just so we understand that what we're fighting for here is that perfect sister who doesn't poop herself but sympathizes with those who do and is therefore good.
So yeah...if you have to see it, see it in 2-d. But I would advise you to save your money and go watch one of the half dozen or so better adaptations of the book. Cause this one just kind of sucks.

Man I am so bummed out right now....I was really looking forward to this! I'm a huge Depp fan

I'm the freak who thought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sleepy Hollow were both great movies, and I also thought Planet of the Apes was a million times better than the original... so I'm gonna wait to make up my own mind on this one
I don't like how Burton's newer films rely so heavily on CGI, but I'm excited for this nevertheless. I just wish Depp's Mad Hatter wasn't so incredibly creepy that it made his Willy Wonka look like Mr. Rogers. This might be a good one to see corned out in IMAX 3D.

yeah, you are a freak...
Charlie and the Choc Factory is the only movie where I do not like Johnny Depp, so creepy! I tried to watch Sleepy Hollow but I was just too bored with it however...
I really liked the Planet of the Apes remake, probably not as much as the original just because I remember the first time I watched the original and how it left my 14 year old jaw dropping. I remember watching the original in my Biology class and NOBODY was paying attention except me... and it seriously changed my life!

Definitely...don't let my opinion put anyone off seeing this if they really want to.
I would, however, strongly STRONGLY suggest you not spend the money on the 3D version. It is supremely mediocre 3D rendering, especially coming off the heels of Avatar. It adds nothing and only distracts.

i was really disappointed. saw it in 3D, and don't know that it was worth it(although now i have two pair of sturdy 3D glasses for festivals this summer).
i was really hoping they'd darken things up, being burton and all, but it was all very superficial. johnny depp's character was not at all developed the way it could have been.
definitely agree with seeing it in 2D. i was checking my watch regularly 30 minutes in.

I give it a 5 or 6 out of 10. I was very disappointed. I can think of three better movies out right now (The Crazies, Edge of Darkness, Shutter Island) and if you do go see it in 3d, be prepared for a lot of nothing special.
I also agree if you are going to see this for Johnny Depp, be prepared to be letdown. As most of you know, he is not the main star in the film.

This film is at the same time intriguing and off-putting... Burton's Chocolate Factory I thought was rubbish, but this is Alice In Wonderland, a genuinely good and cool story... Imagery should be cool, but I'm skeptical of the overall product.

I saw it last Sunday. I liked it in 3d and it cost $25 for two people to get in. The 3D is nothing fantastic but I think Avatar has ruined everything else for me visually. It'll be a long time before I'm impressed with any CGI in a movie now. The movie is def worth watching when it gets cheaper. Don't waste your time with the 3d as it's nothing spectacular. It does have a good story. I usually like Helena Bonham Carter in everything she does, but she was just annoying. The best part of the movie are the tweedle dee and tweedle dum. They're pretty damn funny just to look at.
