So up where I live, we have to deal with a decent amount of flooding each year because of the 50 feet of snow we get every winter. We also have two pretty big rivers flowing through the city of Winnipeg, which makes matters worse. Every few years, the Red River floods fairly significantly. Every now and then we'll get a big one, this year just happens to be one of those years. There was a big flood in 1950 that decimated parts of the city and in response, the city built one of the worlds most impressive flood protection systems (wikipedia the Red River Floodway, it's an impressive piece of engineering). While these systems protect the city (Winnipeg has about 700,000 citizens and is the only major city in the province) the rural parts of Manitoba are only protected by ring dikes. They've been hit hard in 1979, 1997 2007 and again this year. This year has been a little different though. We had a lot of rain in the fall, so the river froze at a higher than normal level. To make things worse, this spring, we've had more rain plus a huge April snow storm. The weather has been pretty cold which has resulted in huuuuuuge ice flows crashing into peoples homes. Typically the Red River is about .3 miles wide. Right now, it's around 6 or 7 miles wide. It's pretty insane
I came across a slideshow on Flickr. You should check this out, some of these pictures are pretty crazy.
