Bon Iver is the brainchild of Justin Vernon, a indie folk singer songwriter.
The Story When Justin Vernon's band broke up, he ended a relationship, and he recovered from Mono, he moved to Wisconsin, spending three months, secluded in his father's cabin in the woods. He would write and record, and no one would see him. Seeing as this would be such a time of depression, Vernon was inspired. Using found instruments, he recorded the nine song album that would come to be For Emma, Forever Ago. It almost didn't get heard by anyone, because Vernon never meant it to be heard by anyone outside of his social group, but he was eventually signed by Jagjaguwar, and the album was rereleased in 2008.
Members: Justin Vernon recorded the album alone, but on tour he has two friends play with him. On the record, Justin uses many different instruments. But on tour, Justin plays the guitar and the bass drum, and of course sings, and his friends Sean Carey plays the drums, piano, vibes and sings, and Mike Noyce play the vocals, baritone guitar, and the guitar.
Major Discography:
For Emma, Forever Ago - His debut album. It received huge critical success in 2008.
Blood Bank - An EP released in 2009 of B-sides off For Emma. Not surprisingly, they're pretty good.
Sounds Like: If you could put what you're feeling like when you're depressed on an album, this is it Genre: Indie Folk Similar Artists: Bright Eyes, Similar Bonnaroo Artists: A.A. Bondy
Physical Reaction/Live Show Because of the amount of overdubbing on the album, Justin will usually give out lyrics to the crowd to sing. This makes you feel like you're helping the band out, and that you're part of the band, kinda. It's very stripped down, and very intimate. I would think that he'll be in a tent.
Personal Notes Bon Iver was my second favorite album last year. His live show's are to die for, so I will not be missing this.

I heard one of the guys was his guitar student, and the other came up to him after one of his shows, and told him that he could play all of the songs and sign the harmony parts and Justin said okay. Is there any truth to this?

Yes and yes. Pretty amazing that the band was fleshed out like that, but I think it just shows the mentality of Vernon and his spirit of collaboration. Wouldn't be surprised to see David Byrne pop in on his set.
