okay so i know this thread seems sort of redundant because there are so many posts that have mentioned canopies, but there was no thread just for it that i could find. forgive me, i'm a n00b.
i can't decide between a canopy and a screen house. what i want to do is set the canopy between the trunk of the car and the tent, with the tent facing into the canopy, to make my on little area where the trunk is under the canopy a little so i can get to it while still under cover.
so, i deliberated and i know everyone says get an ez up, but first they are expensive (i know, the value will last through several 'roos, and stuff), and well everyone has them so i thought it would be fun to try something different.
with six weeks to go i am starting to try them out. i bought this one www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4664263 because it was the cheapest and it was worth a try. the other was a little more expensive same brand ( i can't find it online) and its sort of an ez-up knockoff style.
so its windy tonight (20mph) and we set both of them up in the yard, to see who's left standing come morning. i honestly thought the cheaper one (the screen house) would be sucky, but now that they are both up i am thinking that i like that one better. if i remember correctly, i've even seen it in some people's "show me your campsite" pics. the other one has a 7x7 footprint and this is just too tiny for three people.
my question is this: if you notice, the tent has two zippered sides. clearly they will have to go on the trunk and tent sides. will 11.5ft wide be imposing on my fellow campers in family camp? it is a little wider (and wider still with the guy lines but not too much wider) than what i have heard is normal, 10x10.
i'm thinking now that the screen sides are cooler than hanging tapestries/sheets to block sun because they are held taut. i know i will need to drape something over the screen in serious sun (im from fl, so i KNOW sun) but they will be braced this way and sheets blowing everywhere sounds like a pain in the arse. and i wouldn't even know how to stake a sheet. heh.
also, i am not sure that being walled in on two sides is optimal. it seems ool now, but if we want to take the sides off later we can't. and as a novice seamstress i don't think i will be successful sewing zippers into the extra sides. does anyone here use a screen house and like it? our tent is only 8x8 so it will be offset from the opening side allowing us plenty of space to get in and out. i'm just wondering if maybe we will feel trapped.
i know someone is going to say that an ez up with removable screen walls is the way to go, but we just can't shell out that kind of money.
i found this online as well: www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2029993 and all four sides are removable, but when i read some reviews on amazon people said it wasn't rain proof. our tent is, but i don't want everything getting soaked under this either. so i am thinking maybe getting this one since it is the best of both worlds and spraying it with that weaterproofing junk. actually i will probably end up picking one up tomorrow for a front yard trial run, depending of how much of a mess i wake up to with the other two in the morning.

I have used a hexagonal shaped shade room that I bought at Meijer with mesh sides for the last 4 years. It has worked perfectly. The mesh sides are nice because they keep the bugs out. We just attach a large tarp that is movable depending on where the sun is. This also protects us on the sides in case it is windy and raining. This year new to the mix is an EZ UP 10x10 that I recently purchased from www.mrpearl11.com. Right now it's going for $85. I put it up this past weekend and it was a great success. I'm thinking about using the EZ UP for shading my tent and the hexagonal shade room for sitting space with my fellow campers. Follow the thread for discounted roo supplies because the EZ UP cost less last week when I bought it.

I'm going with a Coleman 14x12 screen house with zippered sides. It's very sturdy one you guy line it down and it can support tarps which I'll hang from one side to block the sun and another couple of light tarps to attach to our tents. Planning on a little shade village setup.
Does anyone have any experience with a 12x12 EZ UP tarped on 3 sides?
Does it get stuffy?
Does it alienate you from your neighbors?
I was testing out our new EZup a few weeks ago in the sun, and it was somewhat stuffier after putting up 3 sides, and then very much so after having the fourth up.
I think we're gonna be using 1-2 sides to block sunlight throughout the day. Maybe 3-4 if we get a monsoon.
I would think that as long as you don't put them up immediately, and you make it a point to get to know your neighbors beforehand and let them know what's up, then there should be any sort of alienation.

4 sides would be out of the question, I know that would be stuffy. I think I'll put the third "wall" up only while I'm sleeping.
I would go with an ez-up. Much easier to add tarps to it to make it larger and block the most sun. I have had bad experiances with screen rooms falling apart in high winds.
you can avoid some of the stuffy ness and still block the sun if you use sheets lightweight instead of tarps or Ez-up sides. Thats my plan again this year. have the tarp set on the east side where the sun is going to come up and start to fry you and sheets for the other sides if necessary. Last year we had no sides and were fine just because of the way the campsite was positioned with tents and all worked pretty nice.

This is my set up and it works great I actually have two more tarps I put around it to keep it shaded. I keep all the food and stuff like that in the screen tent. Then use the bigger tent for lounging and chilling. I have a 4runner and I back it about a foot into the tent cover it with a tarp and thats where I sleep.

is that a tezsport screen house with zip on/off sides? just bought one and yours kind of looks like it. :-)

I used a screen house the first year, 10x12 and we put our tent under it.... some of the ropes to stake down the tent had to go under the screen house walls but it was okay. I wasn't stuffy, but it was just my BF and I. We were cramped for room with it, would have been much easier to go with 10x10.
