I wanted people to know it wasn't bluegrass, ... That had been my reputation up to that point and I didn't want to mislead people.” I love playing all kinds of music, ... And the way to learn that music is with the musicians who invented that style. It's hard to write a style--you need to absorb it.” “This music is very eclectic, ... It's tough to find musicians who are experts in 15 different styles

General Info
DGQ is like a blend of jazz, bluegrass, swing, and many other specific styles all wrapped together and then twisted into Dave's unique sound style. This sound has been tagged Dawg music as Gris's nickname is Dawg given to him by none other than his great friend of thirty years the late Jerry Garcia. Dave keeps pretty traditional to many different roots styles of music and always allows his bandmates to influence and even direct the style and song to their own tastes.

Interesting story
This was Rockygrass Bluegrass Festival in Lyons, CO (a killer spot on the St Vrain river, the river flows through the concert grounds you can be in the river and still see the stage)...anyway.... the year was 1999...... the lineup...well lets just say there was this guy Grisman who kept popping up all weekend along with...
27th Annual RockyGrass July 30-August 1st, 1999, Lyons, CO Yonder Mountain String Band • Bluegrass. Etc. • Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, an Mark Schatz • The Gibson Brothers • Norman Blake • The Del McCoury Band with David Grisman • Peter Rowan and Druha Trava • The Grass Hoppers • The Lynn Morris Band • Tony Rice and David Grisman • The Del McCoury Band • The Seldom Scene • Laurie Lewis and her Bluegrass Pals • The David Grisman Quintet • Tribute to Charles Sawtelle •The Judith Edelman Band • The James King Band • Tim O’Brien with Darrell Scott • The Lonesome River Band • Gillian Welch and David Rawlings • Longview • Thunder Jam featuring Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, and Mark Schatz Now aside from his scheduled performences he also sat in with 2-4 other acts as well most notably YMSB. This was Yonders first Rockygrass, playing that is, as I know I hung out with Jeff and Dave during the fest in 1998. I first met them in 1997 when they were still working in the kitchen at the Verve in Nederland, CO. Well..again..anyway... Grisman sat in for 3-4 songs as I remember it and on the last one (I do not remember what song it was) they had an all out barn-burning, finger picking, dust raising, devil went down to GA-like contest playing , just unreal jam that pretty much about blew everyone in the audience's minds at the end of a particularly awesome display of ridiculously fast mandoline playing by both Jeff Austin and the Dawg Grisman looked over at Jeff bowed his head and laid his madoline down at Jeff's feet admitting defeat (although Dave's playing by no means LOST but it was more a gesture of respect to Jeff) I was very close to the stage and I thought Jeff was going to cry right there on the spot. Just imagine being praised so highly by one of your heros of your instrument in front of a bluegrass loving crowd.
the Quintet 2008
the Quintet circa 1996 I loved this era of the band and saw many, many shows with this lineup Matt Eakle, Joe Craven, Enrique Coria, Jim Kerwin some may recognise this next one from Leftover Salmon they call it the 420 polka the actual name is El Cumbanchero
From 'roo 2008 Superjam with Del McCoury Band
had to put up one with 'ol Jer. the Grisman/Garcia collaborations were so epic
ok two more sorry could not resist the sweet Jerry sound picture is dark but sound is phenominal this is Jerry, Dave, Matt Eakle and Joe Craven so pretty much Jerry with the Quintet minus one
The music is electrifiing {but not electric} and will have you dancing even if you can't or don't dance. It's pretty easy listening with an intense edge and jammy quality that is all its own. I love the band and esp. Dawg and have seen him in various forms close to 50 times. Great music to dance your ass off to but in a sort of relaxed way (if that makes any sense) or just sit back and chill and let the sounds roll over you. You will not be able to keep at least your foot still if you are sitting I promise you. This is NOT bluegrass music so if you do not like bluegrass your fine because this is Not bluegrass music. Gris DOES and has indeed in the past played plenty of BLUEGRASS music but that is NOT what the Quintet is about. Unfortunately it seems I will miss his set at 'roo this year as i will probably be at Mars Volta or Elvis Costello if Sangreal's mock is on.
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
These guys can swing like no other. This will be an awesome set. I haven't seen them for around a decade and had no idea Craven and Coria had left the band, but I am sure they still tear it up. I love Eakle's flute playing. Here's hoping for a little EMD and Acousticity at Roo!
