stupid question... will i have any problem leaving a cooler (with dry ice in it) in my car for the majority of the festival (i.e. when we're at the shows)? i don't exactly want to leave a cooler full of brew out when we're not at camp for any scoundrels to come by and snatch up our goods

I guess if you do I would crack a window. I am not leaving mine in my car because I just think it will get too hot in there, and hoping no one messes with our stuff. Never had a problem with it before.

We are going to put our cooler in our tent and lock it with luggage locks. I think leaving it in the car would make the dry ice evaporate faster. Just my opinion.

We've used dry ice successfully every year. We kept our beer cooler in the car when we were gone for long periods of time, and despite the heat - our brews and water stayed ice cold the entire weekend. It's amazing.
Throw a bunch of grapes in the cooler, and they'll get all fizzy - kinda fun!

It is completely worth it folks. Did this at Waka this past weekend.
I used dry ice with a layer of cardboard on top and then ice and drinks on that. Everything lasted from Thursday to Monday and I didn't have to buy one bag of ice. Granted my cooler wasn't opened much and was inside my car with a tarp over it so the car didn't get too hot.
One thing I noticed was that the bottles of water got stuck in the ice, probably because I froze them prior to putting them into the cooler. But that doesn't matter the colder the better. Once in the heat they melted pretty fast.

i stored my dry ice in a working freezer the night before and woke up to no dry ice when i went to leave... spent about 50 bucks instead of 25 on that stuff ... worked good though, chicken, tilapia, grilled cheese, eggs and pancakes alllll weekend, mmmmm
We got 20 lbs in large blocks. Took three coolers Cooler 1: layer of about two dry ice blocks, layer of frozen water bottlers, beer Cooler 2: layer of two dry ice blocks, frozen water bottles, layer of regurlar water bottles, beer Cooler 3: layer of two dry ice blocks, regurlar watter bottles and a bunch of pre-made sandwiches
We kept the beer coolers outside the tent the whole time and the food cooler in the tent. Even when our campsite got robbed saturday night/sunday morning we didn't have a single thing missing from the coolers.

I bought 3 5lb. blocks and layered the bottom of a 5day 70qt. cooler. We pulled out frozen water bottles mid afternoon on Sunday. Dry ice was gone monday morning but everything was still cold. I only bought one bag of ice at the farm and one prior to leaving on Wednesday for the other 50qt. 5 day. I took the advice of someone earlier and didn't combine the ice and dry ice. There really is no need to if you've got a good cooler.

we did about 10lb in a 55 qt cooler in two chunks. wrapped in a plastic bag. ice pops and italian ice underneath, cardboard over with wet ice on top of that. also frozen capri suns. yogurt and eggs and macarino salad on top. wet ice melted and went down to the bottom where it partially froze in hunks around the ice pops. kept ice lasting longer than the non dry ice cooler but didnt seem to work very well.
ew brought home just about everything we brought and only ate some spam, hotdogs, sandwiches, yogurt, and pop tarts anyway. roo food is convenient ad cheap. next year only one cooler. might dry ice again, but more, and at bottom with nothing underneath as they pops and italian ice werent really very frozen.
Dry ice worked fantastically! Bought 10 lbs and had them split it into two chunks (maybe that was dumb?) for a 50qt cooler. Wrapped it in plastic and a thin towel and basically filled the rest of the cooler with frozen water bottles. As I removed the water bottles, I threw in a days worth of beer to chill. Worked perfectly as a cooler for my beer and definitely had frozen water bottles on Sunday. On Sunday I decided to buy one bag of ice and throw it in because the beer chilling was getting a little less effective. Thanks for all the advice!

i think i said this but...i buy the dry ice that comes in the plastic container. i can buy it way ahead and re use it. ive had mine for four roos and it works great. you dont have to worry about what it touches either and i dont have to worry about finding it at the last minute. you can get it at the dollar general store. its very cheap.
Mixing regular ice and dry ice is not a good idea as when regular ice melts the water that comes in contact with the dry ice will break it down faster before it freezes. You also want any items you want to freeze directly above the dry ice. My best experiece has been block dry ice in the bottom of a good cooler with a cut to fit peice of cardboard above. Frozen water and/or anything that needs to be frozen directly above on the cardboard then fill with anything else needed. In my 5 day coleman extreme i had froxen water monday night when i got home last year and I left my cooler out the entire time.
Did you have flakes or blocks? There is a great place to stop in Nashville that will cut you blocks that will last until Sunday in most coolers.
Where is that? We planned on doing dry ice but everywhere in Bellevue was sold out on Thursday morning
It is called Continental Carbonics, it is right at the Nolensville rd 440 juncture. They are not only inexpensive they will custom cut your pieces for you so they fit your cooler correctly.
