Mixing regular ice and dry ice is not a good idea as when regular ice melts the water that comes in contact with the dry ice will break it down faster before it freezes. You also want any items you want to freeze directly above the dry ice. My best experiece has been block dry ice in the bottom of a good cooler with a cut to fit peice of cardboard above. Frozen water and/or anything that needs to be frozen directly above on the cardboard then fill with anything else needed. In my 5 day coleman extreme i had froxen water monday night when i got home last year and I left my cooler out the entire time.
There was my problem. As the dry Ice started to evaporate, i thought i'd add some regular ice to keep it cold. Apparently that wasnt a good idea.
These Hi tech ice packs seem to be promising. I am testing them now to see how many days they last in a cooler. They are much colder than traditional ice packs.

yep thats pretty much what i use. i get them at the dollar store . they make all sizes. i use them and i put regular ice over it. as for the regular ice melting the dry ice....well whatever you put in there is also going to be less cold so i dont think ice would really matter that much.

I put dry ice in the bottom of one cooler and filled it up with pre-frozen bottled water. I had frozen water all 4 days. I could cut the bottles off and put 2 frozen in my camebak with two thawed ones, and was drinking ice cold water all day (in between Magic Hat wackos). Got my dry ice at Publix and wrapped it in newspaper before putting it in the bottom of the cooler over a layer of cardboard. HTH YMMV
