Another 'That Tent' post because this tip has to do with camping gear:
It's time to check your gear. Set-up camp in the backyard and make sure everything is in working order. Then, when you take everything back down, pack it all nice and tidy and dry and ready for next months trip!
I got out into the woods last weekend and did just that. What did I learn about my stuff? Well, that my new 10x10 sleeping tent is a PAIN in the ASS to setup. My old tent was 1000 times easier to set even though it was very similar. What else? My coleman stove is acting funny (any help here would be appreciated). The gas flow is low and it would take 6 hours to boil water if both burners were on. I've got to fix that. I can use one burner fine, but two is a no-go. Oh, and my new flagpole? Perfect. Battery powered Xmas lights and two flags stayed upright through an unexpected and heavy duty thunderstorm. Awesome.
I'm bringing an EZ-up for shade but I think this tip really applies to those out there with plans to build a taj matarp. Three tarps, Five PVC pipes, some duct tape, zip ties, and a vision? Make sure your vision translates into reality, you know? It would suck to get to Roo and think Damn! If we had just brought Two tarps and Six poles this would have been perfect.
All right so there ya go, Vol. 13 of Pisgah's tip of the week:
Test your gear! Make sure it works! Know before you go!

Taj MaTarp...I love it! I think I might go that route if the people I'm going with can't make up their mind about bringing a shade tent/EZ-up. Their complaint? "It's too heavy."

I need to see if I am capable of setting up my camp in a reasonable time with reasonable effort by myself. The tent shouldn't be a problem but I don't know about the EZ-UP.

The EZ-up is EZ!
Pull it out of the bag, open it as best you can while it's still folded and small, then do laps around and around and around and around going to each leg along the way and pushing the roof upward. Eventually the legs will each click into place and you're good to go.
3 minutes tops. Give it a shot before you go.
*edit* If your EZ-up is tweaked at all it may be hard to do alone.... but if you're having trouble it may be a great way to meet the neighbors!

Just went back country camping this weekend and practiced setting up my bf's tent - even though it's not the same tent I'll be putting up, it definately helps to practice so i don't feel like a retard at the 'roo like i did last year. One valuable lesson I did learn: PUT YOUR CELL PHONE IN A PLASTIC BAGGIE INSIDE YOUR BAG. After trekking out into the heavy rain, my cell was gone along with all my contacts. boo.
I just set everything up yesterday and spent the day drinking beer and cooking out in it ;D
I'll post a picture or two when I get home from work later. Everything was simplicity itself to set up, even the cheap fake-o ez up I got from Wal-mart. Probably only took me 20 minutes to get everything up and ready, and that includes the time it took to go inside and drag stuff out into the lawn. Not bad at all.

I'm sure it's possible, but I wouldn't recommend setting up an ezup by yourself. That's how that shit gets bent. They're made for two people to set up so that it retains it's symmetry.

If it would ever stop raining and get dry in my backyard (2inches of water is standing in the yard) I would assemble my new tent and get to sealing some seams. If it rains this weekend I'm moving the furniture and setting that baby up in the living room!

To add to this...we have been getting crazy rain here the last few days, which reminded me:
When you take Pisgah's excellent advice and do a dry-run setting up your tent take the time to give it a good once over with some spray Scotch-Guard, and also close your seems with some good seam-sealer (ava. at any store with and outdoor department)
A buddy of mine had a single leaky seam in his tent last year, and woke in a big puddle Friday night - no good.

It was a lot of fun, I took a couple pictures, not very good ones unfortunately, you can't see my tent and tarp situation behind it very well, and it isn't yet complete. Still exciting ;D
wolf get some zip ties and sure up that tarp on the back side over your tent...also you may want to take an extra tarp or two...that way if you need too you can close the sides up.
i suggest a silver reflective tarp to help deflect the heat from Tn. sun
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo
My site will look alot like your's wolf. Though, I think I'm going to bring some tee posts and a driver so i can drive a couple posts behind my tent to tie the tarp to so that it is taut and raised up off of the tent. I've also got a 2'x4' fold up table for cooking on.
