I dont know if this is a completely stupid question, but last year I had a hell of a time sleeping in a tent, and it just drove me nuts. So this year I'm striving to steal my moms durango, pack it tight with a massive shade tent.
My plan is to have a blow up bed in the back of the durango, with the shade tent at the end of it so I can leave the rear open, while I sleep for like an hour. And have my camping stuff under my shade tent and party with my neighbors and let them use my area behind the car that I'm not using.
Does this sound stupid? am I going to die in that car?
I would imagine that if any part of the vehicle is exposed to sunlight, it is going to become a huge convection oven and cook you alive. If you don't like sleeping in a tent, I would suggest getting a cot or something and just sleeping in the open under your shade canopy.

Ive seen people that sleep in the back of SUVs but yea if your concern is cooking in the tent just sleep under the shade canopy. I think I may try this out this year. or at least sleep in the tent til I start cooking then move outside for a few hours

I see people doing this every year, but it never works for me. Once I get out of the tent I remember where I am and don't want to go back to sleep. Oh well.
I think Troo does something similar to this - he has a truck with camper shell on it and a mattress in the back - pretty sure he said it stays alot cooler then then tent.
The last couple years I've slept in the back of my pickup on a mattress. It just has a camper. I cover it with a tarp and leave some air space and it stays cool, blocks out some sound and protected me from the '07 dust (not that that will be a problem in what is the swamp called TN this year.)
It works great for me. I used to sleep on a cot, then a hammock but after the dust drove in into my truck in '07, I've never slept anywher else.

In '04 we did this exact same thing. Just took our van and laid down the seats and slept there all weekend. We had all the windows open and got two battery powered fans. Worked great and gave us a little more room to play with at our site.
I have slept in the back of my Suburban every Bonnaroo I have been to. Park it where the sun wont blaze in first thing in the morning. I have the windows down with a towel shut in the door to block sun but let breeze through. A small fan and I sleep better than anyone at my camp.

In 2004, in was blazing hot before the monsoon and my friend stayed in the back of my old durango during the day and said it was more comfortable than being outside under our makeshift shade. I guess you'd get more airflow than you would in a tent.

tent w/ window open + 2 10" fans pointed @ my face + reflective car windshield sunblocker taped/roped to the east side of my tent + wet washcloth = HOPEFULLY i can sleep past 8am.
I've never had any problems sleeping in a tent, on an air mattress with the windows open. I'm sure I'll not be able to sleep much beyond sunrise, but that is just because I have a hard time sleeping when it is bright.

man i've been waking up at 930 every morning no matter if i have school/work/nothing
suppose i've been hitting the hay around 1 though so its not too bad, but i just plan to crawl out of the tent, put the bandana over my eyes and lay under the shade tent
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

You really should not plan on getting a lot of sleep in the tent past about 7am. Moving outside and sleeping under the shade is the way to go, if you can fall back to sleep.
I suppose that might be worth a shot. I'm really not concerned with waking up when the sun comes up. I enjoyed the mornings last year, waking up and sitting around under the shade tent... Plus, I really like getting up and cooking breakfast whenever I go camping.
