I watched the "Die, Hippie, Die" episode of South Park last night and it gave me the idea to start a hippie metal appreciation thread.
For those of you unfamiliar with this episode, hippies infest South Park and Cartman warns everyone that they're planning a full-blown festival. He devises a plan to drive the hippies out by infiltrating their music and playing a Slayer song, because "hippies can't stand metal".
I for one can appreciate both The Doors, Janis, The Beatles, etc. as well as Lamb of God, NIN, Dethklok, Cradle of Filth, and other heavy bands.

How bout you? What heavy bands do you like?
While I understand you were just demonstrating heavy bands you enjoy, it makes me cringe to see NIN next to Dethklok. (Just in case anyone even needs to think twice about that statement, I think NIN is miles above Dethklok in anything you could think of.)

while i agree since it is based off of a cartoon, it is actually very musically proficient. the guy that does this show (and other adult swim ones) is fucking amazing. brandon small i believe his name is. he really is an extremely talented musician. he does all the music for dethklok (which i will say is not bad at all) meaning drums, crazy guitar solos, vocals, everything. he even writes the songs. hes not even really a metal fan!! he's just good enough to play it. he graduated from the berklee school of music which pretty much means youre baller.

I don't like metal for the sake of metal. For me, metal has to have some element of innovation, experimentation, and compositional excellence in it, in order for me to like it. So I'm stoked about TMV and DEP, but not so much about Shadows Fall. I don't like stuff just because it's heavy. But the same can be said for jambands. Some flat out suck because it's just groovey noodling without any musical merit, but some have much more than that to offer... like Phish. ;D

Slipknot, Lamb Of God, Marilyn Manson (not metal, tho), Cradle Of Filth, Kyuss (stoner metal), Mastodon, Pelican, In Flames, Neurosis, Om, and Isis are all some of my faves.

i like a lot of hard/metal music but not all. im not at all a fan of screaming vocalists that you cant understand a word they are saying (dillinger is an exception for me) and im not big on stomping/pushing/hitting everyone im at the show with. Metallica was my favorite band at one point though

i can appreciate a good face melting solo. superfly has done a great job with the heavier bands its booked for roo (clutch, metallica, the sword, tool, mastodon, high on fire, ...tried to book down).
plus i like being able to check out these bands with less of a worry about some meat head trying to start a pit right next to me instead of going to one thats 20 feet away.
Deftones Tool System Of A Down Mastodon (or as my friends and I call them Mastodeezey) The Mars Volta Marilyn Manson Rage Against The Machine NIN A Perfect Circle Superjoint Ritual Down Black Sabbath
When I was a young lad of 19 (ten years ago) I was into Coal Chamber, Fear Factory, Slipknot, Machinehead, Sevendust, Opeth, etc.
Although I still have a place in my heart for the harder stuff, Ive mellowed as Ive approached 30 me thinks.

yeah, what you said.
someone at roo once said to me "yeah, i used to be all angry and listened to angry music - but then i realized it was better to not be pissed off all the time"
although it wasnt a conscious decision, that's pretty much what happened to me over over time.
i can still get into some good hard rock - but really dont understand the appeal of the deep growls in death metal... give me a black label society or lordi (hah!) instead
