New to the boards and first time at 'roo this year. Very excited.
So i'm coming down from DC with 2 friends. Our only large festival experiences previous to this are IT and Conventry. The traffic getting in and out of both of those was crazy. For IT, we sat in 12 hours of traffic both getting in and out of Loring, on top of 12 hours of driving!
It looks like Bonnaroo has better access than either Coventry or IT did, so hopefully that cuts down on traffic. We're trying to figure out the best time to arrive to avoid the traffic and not end up in BFE (although personally i'd rather avoid the traffic, regardless of getting stuck in BFE). It's going to take us 10 hours to get there from DC. If we arrive Thursday early afternoon are we doomed to sit in a ton of traffic? How good are they at getting people in and out?

First of all, Bonnaroo has been dealing with this traffic for the last seven years, so they've got a system that works. The longest I have ever had to wait in four years was a little over two hours in 07, which wasn't that bad. Every year though, I hear of people who get in 30 minutes or less. I wouldn't worry about the traffic, it won't be that bad. Welcome to Inforoo.

^^ Wow 2 hours is the longest you have waited? That is the shortest I have waited! We usually get there around 8-9AM on Thurs morning and sit for 2-4 hrs before we get in. Thursday is the day most people show up so it is the most crowded.
Also, there are a ton of threads about when to show up and which entrances to use. Check out some other threads in This Tent and you should find everything you are looking for. Welcome to the board
5-6 hours is what i'm worried about... What time did you get there? Is it safe to assume the later you arrive Thursday the more traffic you sit in?
06 we got in line probably around 2 pm, took maybe 2 hours 07 in line maybe noonish took 3-4 hours 08 in 9 or 10 am If I'm remembering correctly. I just remember last year was awful for us. I always wondered if there wasn't a car that overheated or broke down and they didn't move it out of the way and the cars behind them didn't realize they needed to go around. I just know I would get really excited if we got to move more than 5 car lengths at a time.

From what I've heard the waiting is longest in the late morning/noontime period of the day on Thursday. I always show up around 2-3 in the afternoon and haven't had to wait too long.

So my question then for you is, where do you end up camping? I've always had a pretty decent spot... The first year being the best

in '06 and '07 i arrived at 10pm weds night and waited in line on bushy branch rd no longer then 30-45 minutes each time. i was camped in the same area both years as well (camp jaws). my walk to centeroo was 15-20 minutes.
in '08 i arrived between 7am-8am when the gates 'officially' opened. i waited along i-24 for 2 1/2 hours. my camp (camp chewbacca) was only a 5-10 minute walk to centeroo.
i plan on arriving the same time this year as i did in '08.
i'll wait 2-3 hours in line if it means a short walk to centeroo!!
^^^^Depends on where you're parked and how nice your neighbors are.
Last year two of my friends left Sunday around noon but we were right on the edge of a campsite so they didn't have to ask anybody to move their tents or anything.
Kind of off the current topic - but sorta fits in this thread. (if you think i should start a new one or put the question elsewhere just let me know)
-- my friend and i were hoping to be able to leave sunday night (like 9pm ish) is this going to be possible? is it common?
By 9pm Sunday chances are good you will be able to find a way out. Lots of people leave on Sunday evening and with Phish playing twice, this should hold true again. No guarantees though.

thanks for the replys. if we can't leave sunday, it's really no biggie. i'd feel bad making people uproot their tents so we could leave lol, so in that case we'll just stay.
