Mods, feel free to move this if this thread is in the wrong spot. I just wasn't sure where to post it.
So, my sister is all for letting us borrow her jeep to take to Bonnaroo this year. The only thing she's worried about is the insurance. She and I both have full coverage, so I initially told her there shouldn't be any problem. I actually worked in the insurance industry a few years ago, but dealt with mainly property/casualty, so I'm not as well versed in the auto aspect.
She talked to her agent - which is just a third party, not the carrier. The agent has basically freaked her out - told her that if anything were to happen, everything would fall on my sister, if someone were to sue, they'd be suing my sister, it's her responsibility even if I am driving, etc., etc.
While I know that this is true, I am trying to explain to my sister that her agent is giving her the worst case scenario. Basically, this can happen any time you get in your car and drive. The only difference is that instead of my sister driving the car, I will be the one driving. I don't want to make it seem like I'm just saying this because I want to borrow her car - but from what I see, it appears that the agent is freaking my sister out without fully explaining what she means.
Can anyone shed some light on this matter for me? I know my sister is covered if I drive her car (the agent actually explicitly told her so). But now my sister is worried if something happens, she is going to get sued. How can I reassure her that even if we have an accident, her insurance is there to protect her?
It seems to me, from what you say, that she has the same coverage if you drive as if she drives. The only reason she should be worries is if she is worried about your inabilty to drive safely.
That's exactly it. And she's told me she's not worried about my driving - just everyone else on the road. But if someone hits me, it's their fault, not mine, and it would be the responsibilty of their insurance carrier to pay a claim.
She's concerned that a dishonest person may try to say it was my fault, or that if I hit someone they will try to sue her for all they can - basically, these are the same things that could happen when you drive your own car yourself.
My sister's a very smart girl, but she just graduated college and moved out on her own only a couple of years ago, so she's not terribly experienced in these kinds of things that go on in the "adult world". I just don't know how I could go about convincing her that there's really nothing for her to worry about, and that she's covered. I was just hoping we had some agents lurking around here somewhere who could give me some info that I could share with her to ease her concern. It's not objective enough for me to tell her - no matter how logical I am about it, whatever I say is going to sound like I'm just saying it to use her car.
There isn't anything an agent can share because, as Troo said, her only concern should be if she doesn't trust your ability to drive. She takes the same chance of being hit by another driver every time she drives the car.
That's what I'm afraid of. I don't think there is much I can do to ease her concern if she just doesn't get it. I've got a perfect driving record and I'm almost 30, so I'm not sure there's much more I can do!
Hmmm, ask her why she thinks there's more of a chance of it happening with you behind the wheel vs. her behind the wheel. Again, if it's other drivers she's concerned about, those people are also out on the road when she's driving, so I'm not sure what it is she's not getting.
Thanks guys. I FINALLY convinced her that me driving her car is no different than her driving the car as far as coverage goes, and that basically her agent is just informing her of what's within the realm of possibility.
Honk if you see a black Liberty w/ University of Memphis tags!
