put up a poll-supported dark-coloured tarp outside the tent to catch the morning sun, a good 3 feet or more from the tent so the wind can carry off the heat (make sure it'll cast a morning shadow on the tent)
What's a good way to do this? Are there products that can be used to shade a 6-person family-style tent with a 76-inch ceiling height? (I'm imagining an EZ-Up that can be pitched at a 45-degree angle.)
Or is it best to buy poles, guy lines, stakes, and a tarp and roll your own? Perhaps someone could write a brief how-to?
I just have a 2 person smaller tent. And I was thinking about maybe a 10' by 12' tent and taking two big poles of some sort and putting them on one side then 2 smaller poles on the east side to block the sun. My tent will be underneath. I am not sure about what kind of poles though.
I bought a hanging tent fan I am hoping is going to help a lot, as well as a big silver tarp that I am hoping will reflect a lot of heat.... buy a few extra hours, anyway....
Bought this and used it last year. I'm bringing it again, but it didn't help as much as I thought it would. I would suggest getting one for each person in the tent, and doing what the guy said with the spooning and Gisele Bunchen or whatever.
I just used one of those at Summer Camp. Hung it directly above our heads, and it was magical.
Bring a kiddie pool and bring 1 cooler full of just ice and put a bag or two along with water that you can get from the water stations. It sounds pretty relaxing...
although emptying the thing might lead to a bit of flooding. probably not good to do near tents. lol.
i've never tried this at roo, but we did have a kiddie pool at the wildhorse campground at the gorge for dave matthews band.
not worth it the water will be warm before you know it, unless you have tons of ice which is very very expensive and/or space consuming. Your trips to the water stations would exhuast you more and your reward would not be that great. Fill a water bottle with cold water from the cooler spray on face and body often.
My set up worked great last year should be even better this year with slight modifications EZ up set tent on west side of EZ run a silver tarp from EZ over tent... stake down tight to ground or elevate slighlty with poles for more airflow. idea as per Lou-- put beach ball in between tarp and tent for air-flow put up a sheet/tarp/etc.. on east side of EZ
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
I am going to put a futon mattress in the back of my dads Suburban, cover the windows with tarps, and set the EZ up ove the back end so I can leave the doors open. It should work pretty well.

i had a similar setup last year and it worked great. we also removed the rainfly from the tent at night (except for friday) to get more of a breeze going through. its also not a bad idea to bring a chair with a foot rest to sleep in if your tent gets too hot or for an afternoon nap.

Okay so I don't know what I can do. I don't really have a tarp and can't splurge and get one for a decent amount of money.
I have a shade tent that's not in amazing conditions. It should shield the sun mostly but I want to block it a little. Would sheets work? If i hung them from the side? I know that might just make it hotter.
The first year I went I woke up each morning at 6am and couldn't really get back to sleep. Second year I made sure there was a tarp over the tent for shade and brought an O2 Cool fan (http://www.o2-cool.com/battery_overview.php), and was able to sleep til 10-11am. I also have a handheld fan that sprays water and sprayed myself in the morning when I turned the big fan on...that was a nice way to lull myself back to sleep.

I have slept on a mattress in my suburban every year. I would suggest rolling down the windows and shutting a towel in the door covering the opening instead of using tarps. They will block the sun but let tons of airflow in.
1. in response to the kiddie pool..its all fun an games until you wake up to a stranger bathing in your pool soo gross. 2. sleep naked 3. naps under trees and bleachers are essential to survive the weekend 4. red bull always helps sleep deprivation too!

as far as the kid pool i agree, unless you are rich and next to the ice truck its not going to do you much good. two girls camped next to us last year had one and it never got used. how much does a bag of ice cost? too much to fill a pool with and the walk could be a bitch. better off just spending 10 minutes in the water station

any suggestions for a low budget?
We always bring tapestries (sheets would work) and a bunch of clothes pins, and then we move the tapestries around our shade tent to keep the sun from beating into the shaded area. Does block the breeze a bit, but a nice way to increase the amount of available shade; maybe something like this would work for you.
not too expensive, and they worked really well. i would have slept a lot longer, if not for the wake up call from the bird perched on top of our tent this morning.
Wal-Mart is selling a portable misting fan for $45...plugs in or uses 8 D batteries. With the temp/humidity forecast, I'm seriously considering getting one. Or twenty.

A cheap tarp is better than no tarp. I just picked up a couple of 8'x10' tarps at Family Dollar for $3.50 each. Other suggestions would be shower curtains from a dollar store.Obviously, you don't want the clear ones. Sheets will help some, but tarps would be better.
Last year when I woke up in my tent from being too hot I would just crawl outside of the tent with a pillow and blanket to lay on and would nap under our shade tent. That helped me a lot.
Adapt your self prior to Roo and then Roo will be normal. I've started sleeping with the windows open for 2 weeks now. Bad at first but i've gotten better.
I have one that I used last year. I don't know or care how it works but it does. They also make big ones for pet beds but the weight issue would probably make it impossible for most people to use as a mattress which is my fantasy

Have you ever had Red Bull confiscated by security while entering Centeroo? I'm going to take a can in each evening and I'm a little worried about that.

Good advice. I was working in my yard sweating like crazy but thinking: "This is gonna get me ready for Roo Heat."

Oh, indeed about the fly. I will not be using my rain fly at all as i will have a silver tarp over my tent.
