Because of all the reports of things being ripped off from campsites last year I thought it might be beneficial to start a thread that would allow everyone to offer up their ideas on how to make your campsite look like someone's there when you are away.
I'm sure the majority of thefts occurred while people were away from camp at Centeroo. I would be willing to bet that the thiefs would not approach a campsite that they thought someone was at.
My idea to make my campsite look occupied is this:
I'll bring a small AM/FM radio and leave it running (tuned to Radio Bonnaroo) in my tent, not loud enough to disturb my neighbors but loud enough to hear if you approach my tent. I'll also bring a solar powered yard light which I will place in my tent as well. I'll also bring a guitar which I leave in my tent, I'll place that under my sleeping bag so that it looks like a body and place a hat or wig on the tuning pegs for the final touch.
When we got robbed last year it was while i was sleeping outside the tent on a cot, and my buddy was sleeping inside the tent. And it had to be day light since i saw the sunrise each morning last year.
Know your neighbors, Know your neighbors, Know your neighbors, Last year in access their was someone going through peoples tent someone near us confronted them and they took off. Know your neighbors, Know your neighbors, Know your neighbors,
wow. i actually had no idea stuff was ripped off at Roo. Everyone is so nice and communal!! I suppose I've just had a good couple of years... And really, the best advice IS to KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS (well said Clato). We've been great friends with our neighbors the past couple years, and never had an issue bc there's generally always someone around the campsite.
Neighbors are also great for pulling your rain fly over your open/sky lighted tent when it starts to downpour and you're at a show.

I put everything in the back of my Blazer when we left to go to Centeroo. Also if you dont have room in your car, put it in the tent and get a luggage lock to put on the zipper.
Some friends of mine have a statue like this, but even more realistic looking. They took it all over the place with them last summer and put it in random places at festivals mostly just to freak spun kids out because it looked so real and ready to attack. So if you had some spun wook come and try and steal your stuff I bet they might pass up your site if they saw one of these wooden doberman statues.
I know for a fact, someone was diggin into our cooler in 07, there is no way we went through 8 cases of beer between two of us! I am planning on using the bike lock type chain around the cooler. I dont mind sharing, but if I dont know I am sharing is a different story.
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
wouldn't putting your cooler(s) in the hot car be a bad idea?
You would think so, right? But we've put our coolers (we normally use two coleman five-day coolers, which work amazingly well in the heat) in the trunk every time we leave camp, and its not too too bad. I think by sunday we usually run out of ice, but one ice run isnt bad at all.
The only time I've had stuff lifted at Roo was when my friend was passed out at camp and in plain sight of the thieving wook.
Lock your valuables in your glovebox in your locked car. Money, Ipod, other...
Keep your cooler in your tent. I lock my tent.
Bring a box that locks.
Most importantly. Make friends with your neighbors. Last year after helping them setup their shade structure I told them about getting robbed in 06. I'll look out for you, you look out for me, mmmkay?
Oh, and to deter theft of the entire tent use those dog tie-out screw things. Put two into the ground on opposite corners then padlock the tent to them.
I shit you not . Noone is stealing my tent bivy or otherwise as long as my middle age lardass is in there holding down the fort. the would need a forklift.
