So I'm flying into Tennessee for my first Bonnaroo (!!!), but the rest of my friends are driving. I'm trying to decide between camping-only and regular camping.
Obviously I like that the camping-only area is so close to Centeroo, but are there advantages to being in the regular camping area as well? How's the atmosphere in each of these places? And are canopies normally used in the camping-only area? If my friends drive, can they park somewhere and camp with me in camping-only?
Atmosphere is similar in both areas. You need some type of shade no matter where you camp or you will roast and sunburn. Your friends can camp with you in Tent Oly as long as you save them space (or share your space.)
I'd recommend camping at the car if you are close enough (you have to decide what "close enough" is) and moving to Tent only if you are farther away than you'd like. Make the decision when you arrive but be sure and have a way to transport your gear to Tent Only (cart, wagon, manpower) if you need to.

It's hard to say for sure as Tent Only seems to change every year but likely there will be room Thursday afternoon. No one should be mad as long as you are not unreasonable. Saving lots of space for a big group of people when the area is full will likely put people off.
Also save some space by putting a tent/canopy/cooler in the saved area to fill it in and move it back to you area when the friend arrive.
