I'm coming from Danbury, Connecticut, and I can't decide the best way to go. Mapquest tells me to take 84 West to 684, down to 287, which will bring me over to 78, ultimately throwing me on 81.
However, I think it may be better to take I-84 West until that hits 81 over by Scranton, PA. I think this would be an easier drive, and it also avoids a few tolls. However, if it's going to add more than 30 or 40 minutes to my travel time, it's not really worth it.

i'm driving from branford but for the last two years we've done a caravan with a friend from carmel, ny so have driven through danbury on our way up to meet (granted not the most direct route but it beats driving through or close to the city).. both years we took 84 to to 81 and it has worked out well. the drive is easy but i haven't tried the other route so i can't comment on that. however, last year we had gps and it directed us that way, from 84 to 81. side note, it also directed us through back roads when we got close to the farm bypassing the major highway and we waited in line for maybe 20 minutes.
I'm coming down from Vermont, first time going to roo, and looking at all the possible ways, I think I'm gonna do 91>84>81... google maps doesn't say there are any tolls and it appears to be as fast if not faster then any of the other routes. I want to avoid NYC at all costs cause it can back my travel time up an hour or so.
