5 LP VU box. It includes all the Verve/MCA records, 1969 (which they never finished), and Nico's Chelsea Girl (which was basically a VU record anyways), a few posters and a peel off banana sticker for VU + Nico.
Really proud of my wife picking this out on her own. While I have 4 of 5, I have none in Mono. She did her homework.
Back in April I decided to give VinylMePlease a try. They announced the next 3 'essentials' albums ahead of time at a discounted rate, and with quarantine in full swing, I think I just needed something to look forward to. I first heard about VinylMePlease back when they repressed Demon Days and everyone was losing their minds and later down the line with the Songs for the Deaf: all good things. I didn't quite understand how a vinyl subscription service worked, but I knew swapping was a thing. And if I didn't get that figured out, I didn't have any of the next 3 albums so no pressure!
Now with June ending, I can say that I really enjoyed my 3 month subscription. All my albums arrived in pristine condition and the packaging is really fun! I'm a sucker for cracking open a new album and seeing all the goodies included and VinylMePlease is like that on steroids. The albums themselves have all sounded amazing and the color variants don't disappoint! It's nice to know ahead of time that I'm getting my money's worth, and I don't have to go on Discogs before each purchase to make sure the pressing I'm getting off Amazon doesn't sound like complete ass.
After my Stooges album arrived successfully, I felt like I would try the swapping feature the following month. Nothing against Stevie, its just that VinylMePlease had built up an impressive back catalog of past album-of-the-months. So I did my research, found out the exact hour when swaps for May would be open, and made a ranked list of albums I would try for (if available). It sounded like every great once in a while, they would release a few copies of a previously sold out record, so pretty much everything was on the table. I knew hundreds of other people would be doing the same thing so I was prepared for a bloodbath. And it was. But after a few stressful minutes of clicking and error messages, I was able to secure my own copy of Demon Days! Though victorious, I had a feeling that would get old after a while if I chose to extend my subscription.
Shortly after, there was a members only flash sale and I was able to grab a copy of Return to Cookie Mountain for $16 off. It worked out perfectly, since the June album-of-the-month was delayed a month due to Covid. I did end up waiting a full month to spin RtCM, even though it came with Demon Days. It was super nice that there was no additional charge for shipping additional albums if packaged with your subscription album. This kept me checking back on their website to see if anything else interesting popped up in their sale section knowing my subscription would be up soon.
So yea, just felt like putting all my feelings about my VinylMePlease experience in one place. De Stijl is still on the way, but tomorrow I'll be decided whether to do 3 more months. This will be the first time I find out what the album is right when swaps open, so I guess I'll finally get to experience that. But that just seems stressful and I think I'll cancel if the record-of-the-month is not something I'm interested in. Rumor has it it's John Mayer. So pass. But overall, I would recommend the 3 month subscription and I'd be open to do it again!

Yeah I've seen some back and forth reviews recently about things but in the past I had great experiences with the service. I'm sure covid is messing with stuff but it seems there's also some complaints from folks about slow customer service, which can always be frustrating.
I only traded up once and have only done the 3-month plan a few times. It usually worked out

I used VMP for around a year, 2018-2019, and no regrets here. Everything I received from them sounds good and the packaging is usually excellent, at least for their main products. By the end of last year it felt like their choices were starting to become very limited, mostly stuff I'd be interested in but don't necessarily need to own or a lot of stuff you could find OG copies of for much cheaper.
But there's no way I'd own albums like Daydream or Three Feet High and Rising if VMP didn't make affordable reissues, they're doing good work for sure.
I forget how the switch works but I did don't once a year or so ago. I think it was only former record of the months to choose from and maybe not everything was in stock? Can't recall completely
So if you haven't seen the July Essentials is John Mayer - Continuum. If you know me irl then you know I can't stand John more than I can't stand Jack White. I didn't even think twice about swapping out and snagged the new McCoy Tyrner reissue.
You were right. You can't swap out for upcoming stuff but you can swap for other clubs.
This was an interesting experiment. Two of the four are some of my favorites ever. The other two aren't in my wheelhouse. I'll sell the White Stripes album and just about break even.
I was set to discontinue till I saw Ladies and Gentlemen.. pop up for September. I guess I'll be renewing next week.

Yeah, I also took a look because while I like John as a guitarist I'm not sure I want the album if there's something else.
I was interested to see that you can swap it for store credit, as well. Something to keep in mind for the future if there's no available options I want to swap it with.

Well looks like I’m back on VMP for Spiritualized, bless their souls for giving this masterpiece a proper reissue. Now if they can reissue Live At Royal Albert Hall too...

Third Man Records upcoming Vault release is a Johnny Cash package. Awesome. Looks like I'm sticking with it
Beginning on April 29th 1973 and lasting for another six evenings, the "A Week To Remember" concerts dreamt up by music industry icon Clive Davis were a stunning way to highlight the Murderers Row line-up of artists that were then signed to Columbia Records. With highlights like Miles Davis, the Staples Singers, Bruce Springsteen, Earth, Wind and Fire along with many others, the seven nights of shows at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles was, by all accounts, a remarkable showcase of the clout the legendary label wielded.
Of particular interest is the live performance by Johnny Cash. Touching on just about every song one would wish for him to play at a concert in 1973, the stacked set list includes choice guest appearances from both his wife June Carter Cash and fellow Sun Records alumnus, Carl Perkins. Opening with the iconic "Big River" through a heavy take on Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down" a breezy jaunt through "A Boy Named Sue" to "Hey Porter" to "I Walk The Line" to "Jackson" and "Folsom Prison Blues" it's a wonder at how many downright PURE hits were just...the songs in his set.
Third Man Records, in conjunction with Sony Music and the estate of Johnny Cash are ecstatic to release A Night to Remember. Presented here for the first time ever is the full show multi-track recording of Cash's performance from that spring night of 1973. A master class in a show if there ever was one, this production holds up with Cash's previous live albums while still exposing a side to the Man in Black not displayed on his canonical sets from San Quentin and Folsom Prison. Pressed on two discs on a new vinyl color we’re calling “vintage white", this double LP is yet another prime entry in the already-expansive Cash discography.
As if that weren't enough, Davis had the foresight to professionally FILM these concerts. While not capturing the entire set, the revelatory backstage footage is worth the price of admission alone. The high-quality, multi-camera shoot is gorgeous and immediately transports the viewer back forty-plus years and this previously unseen moment of Cash in full command of his performance and a crowd just lapping it up.
Over the past several years, Grammy Award Winning producer John Carter Cash has embarked on an ambitious project pairing both lyrics and poems written by Johnny Cash and placing them with current artists to create an entirely new collaboration. The Forever Words album of 2018 was inspiring and continuing on that path, a 7-inch including two previously unreleased Forever Words pieces accompany this package. We couldn’t be more excited to have the inimitable Ruston Kelly sharing his earth-shaking romp on “Dark and Bloody Ground.” On the flip side, a super-secret MYSTERY ARTIST to be revealed soon. Feel free to start guessing. It's a doozy. Pressed on jaw-dropping gold colored vinyl, this single is a thing of pure beauty.
We can think of no better way of not only keeping the music and memory of Johnny Cash alive than by these collaborations with artists out there today who we feel are both important and worth sharing with the Third Man world.

Now trying to decide what to swap out in VMP for the John Mayer record. Looking at either Townes Van Zandt - For the Sake of the Song or The Roots - Phrenology. Have to decide soon.

Fwiw I have the OP of Phrenology and it's a fantastic sounding record. Not sure how different the VMP version will be, but if they don't mess with the master or mix it should sound sweet.

I'm probably going to go with The Roots. Mainly because it looks so pretty in the preview video but also because I'm sure I can find a cheap copy of the Townes album. Plus, if I ever need to swap in the future I can always do Townes then.
Ugh. Went on and reupped my VMP subscription today. Obviously I get an email right after about them dropping Sonny Sharrock's Ask The Ages in October. It was the last record he recorded and arguably one of the best free jazz albums ever released. Just a glance at the quartet [Sharrock, Pharoah Sanders, Charnett Moffett (bassist for both Marsalis) and Elvin Jones (Coltrane, bby)] and that gives you an idea.
Needless to say, I blew another $40 without blinking twice.

I saw that but didn't look into it. You might have just convinced me to rejoin too.
Literally was just going to make another post about how excited I am for the Spiritualized VMP reissue. Give me all of those 90s Spiritualized albums and proper Spacemen 3 reissue campaign and I'll love VMP forever.
Keep your eye on it. When I joined I got 4 months for like $50. While it may not help you with July, I'd be surprised if that's not in the store after the month is over.

Can you buy that stuff without subscribing?
I don't know how much of a savings it is but it does look like they may sell some copies of things on Amazon. I found this when looking up some things when deciding to swap my Mayer album. I think this is the VMP version:
So tempting to get the clear vinyl of the new Sufjan album. But tbh I barely even listen to vinyl, I just like collecting them. It's one of the harder to rationalize things I do.
5.5/four tet, daphni b2b floating points, avalon emerson 5.12/neil young 5.19/mannequin pussy 5.21/serpentwithfeet 5.25/hozier 6.12-16/bonnaroo 6.28/goose 6.29/goose 9.17/the national + the war on drugs 9.23/sigur ros 9.27-29/making time 10.17/air
Including an Indie Store version. Digital version is released this week.
I'm almost mad I dumped all my cash into Marissa Nadler & Stephen Brodsky cover "In The Air Tonight" 45s, but then I remembered I can tell people I'm a fan of Phil's 80's work.
