disclaimer, i haven't personally used any of the products you are considering. having said that, i'd recommend the LP120. i have both a direct drive (SL1200) and a belt drive (rega p3) turntable. i prefer the direct drive. being able to switch to 45RPM with the push of a button is great, also a direct drive will spin up faster. the LP120 is essentially a copy of the 1200 but built for home rather than the rigors of radio stations and clubs, so you get pitch controls and stuff like that which you won't really use but are fun to play with.
regarding the speakers, the audioengine has a lot of pluses: they look good, are small, and have good functionality, i think they have a USB connection you can plug into a computer, and i know they have bluetooth so you can easily stream spotify etc from your phone. so they are a slick solution, but based on reviews the sound quality will be good but not great. you'll have a midbass hump in the sound which can be pleasing to some ears but isn't accurate and you might get tired of, and you won't be able to hear the full bass spectrum (disclaimer, you won't be able to "feel" the full bass spectrum on any bookshelf speaker, but you can hear it on some).
my recommendation always for a bookshelf speaker is the JBL LSR305, or it's current variant the JBL LSR305P, which is really just a cosmetic upgrade. These are pro monitors and sound stupid good for their price. I've owned a lot of different speakers, and currently do most of my listening on the LSR305s and am still dumbfounded at how they can sound this good and be this small and this cheap. However there are significant functional tradeoffs with the JBLs. no bluetooth, you'll need weird RCA to TSR/XLR cables, and their volume control is per speaker on the back of the speaker, which you'll likely want to set and forget and run a passive volume control of some sort. So way less clean and intuitive then the audioengine, but the sound quality will be better. It's a tradeoff of functionality vs sound.
some links that will explain the above better then i can:
one other thing about the audioengines, if you choose to start with them and then upgrade to other speakers later, i bet they would make great PC speakers for casual listening and gaming.
Thank you all for the suggestions - I ended up ordering a bundle from Turntable Lab with AT120X & Audioengine A2+W. Looking forward to receiving it and playing with it!
speaking of poor vinyl purchasing choices, here's a reminder that i own this.
lol I listened to that one time and never again. Maybe i'll try it again some point. I didn't get the test pressing though. Just the vinyl. I'm still glad I got it

Lol same here, I listened to the test pressing once, never even opened the regular vinyl.
It makes me laugh at myself whenever I see it, so in that it has value.

Fred I don't know what your receiver situation is but don't count them out in your purchasing. I have a Yamaha RX-V85 and it is the single best addition I've made to my home, ever. The Spotify/Bluetooth integration is super easy and I use it ever day. Plus the mesh speaker system (basically a bootleg Sonos) is great.
If you get a 4k receiver you could integrate it with a home theater system and be set for a long, long time. Plus if it has a phono input you'll save the, like, $50 you were going to spend on a pre-amp haha.
My turntable is spinning too fast. Anyone know how to fix this?
I just had a similar issue. There are some helpful videos on youtube, but for my turntable there were two shallow holes underneath the turntable. One for 45 rpm and one for 33. All it took was a flathead screwdriver turned slowly to adjust. They were pretty sensitive to changes. I downloaded a free app that tested rpm when you placed the phone on the turntable. That was super helpful too.

Wife and I share a birthday, we got:
IDLES - Joy as an Act of Resistance Stooges - Fun House Bowie - Aladdin Sane and Lady Gaga - Chromatica
Plus we restarted Vinyl Me Please and grabbed TV on the Radio's Return to Cookie Mountain for month 1. Pretty stoked to expand the collection after a quiet period.

For now, I’m keeping the setup introductory. When I save more, I’ll upgrade the system with receiver and better speakers. Thank you for the tip though!
Due to this thread I finally decided to give VMP a shot. 3 month sub, started with the Slowthai record.
Been listening to this a lot, very happy with it. It looks cool and sounds great. Was happy to see it was pressed at QRP! Looking forward to next month's announcements.
I'm thinking 80% chance ill like this and it'll be my favorite record of hers, 80% chance jill's into it regardless of my opinion. Solid odds. Also probably +80% it's better than JTs foray into the forest

Ughh....>I may buy it. I do think I'd enjoy it mostly based on who is involved. I never bought any of her music and haven't really been much of a fan so this is a leap. Maybe I'll listen a bit first and not go in blind.
