I bought extra large stakes that will stick about 12" out of the ground to tie the guide lines to... that way they won't have to be stretched out nearly as far from the tent.

it's an exra few lines that secure a tent or rainfly or a tarp city to the ground. some peoples guy lines reach way out turning it into trip wire. WallMarts got extra ground stakes that have the orange handles, 4 for 2.28. .28 cents more expensive than the regular ones. a good deal sais I.
I have eyes like a cat as well as speed, balance, reflexes, and instincts. I can smell a horizontal guide line from a mile away.

Ah! Yeah I tripped over them the first night but the second night I remembered where they were. Dumb name though.

I researched because I was surious as to why they were guy wires...I found "guy" come from old french/spanish meaning guide. And Im a victim every year until I memorize the path
on top of saving your fellow roo'ers a few scrapes, you will also potentially be saving your tent by making them visible. Nothing worse than having your rainfly get ripped in the process of having someone trip over your guy wire. I will just be putting low metal fencing around mine (the wires don't stick out that far)
Part of the problem is caused by inexperienced campers. There's no reason to stake the line as far away from the tent as it will go; rather, stake at the base of the tent and tighten up the slack in the guyline - just be sure to stake at an angle, otherwise it will pull straight out of the ground.

In 2007 the narrow but well trodden path right next to our camp had had a pair of guylines in the middle of it that tripped EVERYONE for the 1st couple days. It wasn't our camp so we didn't touch them... but it was quite entertaining for a while
I hadn't properly considered the problems that this could pose. For that matter I hadn't even really put much thought into staking down my canopy... might have to pick up some rebar.
we found fluorescent duct tape, which my kiddo has been DYING for an excuse to use... so she will be tagging our guylines at intervals with super bright tape.

Rebar?? That seems dangerous....are you joking?
Rebar actually makes excellent stakes, it's relatively easy to shape into what you want and you can cut it to length. If it's pounded into the ground far enough it shouldn't be real dangerous.

someone explain exactly what you do with these, because when we tried to put our canopy up (it has them) it kept falling over and we couldn't figure out what to do. maybe it was the jane, but still, the instructions sucked, i wanna have some sort of idea how to set it up before we are there looking dumb not knowing, haha
