This has probably been answered a million times over but me and a friend are both first timers. I mean we have NO IDEA what were getting ourselves into. So the main question is, what is the overall preferred method - camping by the car or tent only? ??? I have tried to read as many of these threads as I possibly could to kind of get some general idea of what to do so were not completely screwed when we get there!
Car camping is a lot easier, tent only is a lot closer, but nowhere to lock up your stuff. Plus you have to haul your stuff there. I always keep it in mind as an option in case I get put in BFE.
Camping at your car is best if you're close enough. You have everything there, a place to lock up valuables, and you don't have to haul anything. What is close enough is an individual choice.
Tent Only is good if you want to make trips back and forth during the day and you're parked way out or if you have a lot of people and stuff and can't fit it in a smaller campsite.
It's always best to arrive, scope out the area and see what works best once you get there. Just have a plan in case you want to move to Tent Only (ie what to take and how to haul it.)
I've never camped in tent only but I think regardless of where I ended up I'd be too lazy to move my stuff to tent only. That seems like a lot of hard work.

I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.

there are pros and cons to both.
i will only go tent only from now on after trying it last year. a couple hours of hard work for A LOT less walking the whole weekend. and we were able to bring our car up to tent only sunday to load up so you don't have to carry it all back. also, you don't have to bring all your stuff right away. you can always go back later to grab more supplies.
i will say though, if you have only two people it's going to be a lot tougher hauling stuff. you could use the fest taxis.
whatever you decide, you will have an amazing time!
Where do you park if you choose tent only? and when do you hav to decide that? Can you wait to see where they are putting you before you decide?
When you arrive at the farm, you'll go through a "toll booth", however you won't have to pay a toll. You'll have your ticket scanned and have a wristband put on. Then your vehicle will be searched, usually by volunteer and not very thoroughly, but possibly by DEA agents and drug sniffing dogs, resulting in everything in your vehicle being taken out and gone through. If you survive this process, you'll be directed to a parking/camping spot.
You'll then have the option of either setting up camp there or hauling everything to tent only camping, but you're pretty much stuck parking there either way. The sooner you decide the better. The longer you wait, the higher the chance that tent only will have filled up, forcing you to either go back to your car or attack and drive out someone whose campsite you'd like for your own. This should be avoided if possible, since this person is very likely to retaliate by ransacking your camp as soon as you leave it as well as possibly stalking you for the rest of the weekend, following you back to your car and setting fire to it.
