i thought this was pretty lame. i was a 2min walk from centeroo in Tent only and didnt want to walk all the way to shakedown to use the showers, then we got to the fountain to rinse off and it was off all day. they didnt turn it on until 5ish...maybe a trick so that people would pay for showers? boo
The water has fine sand in it as many wells do when they pump at capacity. It is not "people" dirt and is not disease laden. (though I like that people think it is as it keeps the fountain way less crowded.)
If you ever swim in a lake, you are much likely to contract a disease from that water than the fountain.
The "official" reason for shutting it down was lack of water. But we just had the wettest May in history and they had planty of water in the droughts of '05, '06, '07. And why was there water at night and not during the day.
So either they wanted us hot or they were diverting water elsewhere during the day. I can think of no HUGE water user that was added or only ran in the daytime so I am forced to concluded they wanted us hot to increase shower revenue. (just my opinion.)
Is the fountain on a well? I thought in 07, I saw a truck emptying and refilling a big tank under it. I always assumed they just recycled and filtered the same water most of the weekend.
I emailed them a few years ago and they said it was a well. They also said they were required to check the water quality daily. They likely have a system that allows the water to percolate back into the aquafer at a slow "self-cleansing" rate (much like a septic system) but I don't know about that. (Maybe the truck empties the dirty water.)
Plus the quality of the fine sand that is pumped out seems to indicate a well also (from my experience with wells). I didn't go in this year cause "why get wet at night?", so I don't know if the water/ sand was any different.

This really annoyed me too. It would be off during the hottest parts of the day and then it would be on at night when nobody wanted to go in anyway. Really frustrating and I don't understand why they would do it.

I just rapidly strip off dirty clothes, douse myself with a jug of water that I fill up at the water station, and scrub down with my body wash in clean washcloth, shampoo my hair, douse again, dry off with a clean towel, and put on clean clothes, and get the hell out of there. At least in 07 I did when i could find a clean portojohn not far from camp every morning. In 08, I only spongebathed, because i was in BFE, and the portojohns were disgusting. I know it sounds crazy, but why pay 7 bucks for something that can be done for free?

this was my second year at the farm and i still went in the fountain once. What you guys are saying about the well and the sand makes sense............but, maybe it's just me but the water seems pretty clean throughout thursday and friday, it only starts getting brown saturday morning. Maybe it's just my subconscious.
It's really not worth it to pay $7 for a shower. Last year we took a little portable solar shower and that's what we used, not bad at all. Either way, tons of people still "shower" at the water stations...right?
man I've only been there once (in 07) and holy shit the water looked a lot darker this year. straight dirt, actually. but why was it off during the day every day? it was on at night ....total bs
I don't know if this contributed to the fountain being off or not, but according to some of our supervisors Bonnaroo was causing rolling blackouts at least across Manchester. If a local could confirm this, it'd be appreciated. They shut off our AC in the staff tents and the water to our staff showers every few hours after Friday because Roo was sucking up so much juice, perhaps they thought the electricity that powers the fountain pumps were expendable.
I noticed I had a lot less cares this year. I went in the mud, I went in the fountain, I slept at shows when tired.. all the things I was hesitant to do, I really just went for this year. And ya know what, not only did I live... I LIVED
