I think if they insist on keeping a jam headliner, we'll see the Dead possibly doing a one off. After that, it might be the end of the specific space for a jam headliner. We might get Phish in a few years, but I think there will be diversity in genre on Sunday from now on, which might keep people on the farm until the last note is played.
Please no DMB/Widespread/ String Cheese ever again.

Widespread/ String Cheese are two of the best band i want to see them there we need more jam
there ain't no place I'd rather be, Drink all day and rock all night My name is treetop And I'm higher than you'll ever be I'm married to my roots here Still I feel like I am free 6/11/09 -> 6/14/09: Bonnaroo
I don't think we'll see the jam slot leaving for awhile. I'd say the Dead next year as a probably farewell performance and then DMB in '11 and Phish in '12. Neil Young & Santana could also fill this slot while still getting a lot of crossover appeal.
What does everyone think about the possibility of a slot by the Black Crowes with Jimmy Page? They toured large amphitheaters in 2000 so they had the draw to get the size of audience that a normal headliner would, and no one could deny that hearing Zeppelin songs would be legendary, even if it is Chris Robinson with Jimmy Page.

I could see the jam headliner disappearing. 2 years ago there wasn't one until the Allman Brothers pulled out and Jack Johnson was moved from his headlining position.

That would be a cool idea. I think it would be cool to see bands that "deserved it" from the past performances at Bonnaroo, but weren't quite up to headliner status. That would be better than a rotation of WSP and Phish to me at least.

Yea they really are going to run out of worthy headliners in the jam realm. The only acceptable headliners for Roo's current status as a music festival are Phish and the Dead. The others aren't big enough, except Dave, but I really hope we don't get any Dave.
2/5- Papadosio 3/3- MUSE 3/12- John Mayer 3/19- The Werks 3/31- Passion Pit 4/18- Ben Folds 4/20- Against Me! 6/10- Bonnaroo 6/30- Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey
6/18: Phish in Hartford 6/25: Phish in Camden 7/2-7/4: Nateva 7/17: God Street Wine at Irving Plaza 7/23-7/25: String Cheese at Red Rocks!! 8/17-8/18: Phish at Jones Beach 9/3: Rush at PNC
This Bonnaroo lineup is in dire need of some Rush.

DMB obviously isn't popular with some of the people on this board, but they're still huge with a lot of "hippies" and are a huge draw to the mainstream crowd. Their Rothbury performance last year was one of my favorite concert experiences ever, because I got to enjoy one of my favorite bands without all the drunk teenage girls and douche bags.
The Dead, Phish, DMB, WSP ... Neil Young/Santana can also fill the "jam" slot and SCI is probably too small but never say never.

If Neil Young can be a Sunday closer then there's no reason why Pearl Jam can't be one as they jammed like WSP in 2008.
I think you are giving WSP a little bit there. PJ is the epitome of a Saturday Headliner. Someone who you look over a span of 10 years and they were the biggest band in America.

Bonnaroo has set themselves up to do anything they want to do. They can use 3 headliners or 6...Its all up tp them. Yes Sunday night has traditionaly been the "jam" slot but why does it have to be every year?? I think there are plenty of Sunday closer spots left that havnt been to the farm yet..SANTANA being one of the top options! Point being...They can do anything they want to
no more WSP or the Dead... and i dont think Bonnaroo will do that in recent yrs to come...IMO we will see MMJ with a Fri Night or Sun night (roo 2011) slot before WSP ever is back..

Actually, it was a homage to Pearl Jam's talent, as I didn't know they could play like that. I always thought they were grunge/rock band, but they surprise me as they could jam-jam with the best of them.

it seems like a toss-up between keeping the tradition/roots alive with a jam band headliner, or expanding and offering a different variety of big-name music acts in one weekend... i'd go with the latter to keep more people interested in the festival and keep it relevant. how many jam-only festivals are really musically relevant on a larger scale?
2010: 3/12: The Bad Plus/Happy Apple/Buffalo Collision/The Bad Apple 6/10-13: Bonnaroo 6/19: Rock the Garden 7/30-31: Mid West Music Fest 8/21: Los Hombres Calientes 8/31: Marijuana Death Squads 9/11: The Book of Right On w/ City on the Make 9/23: Of Montreal w/ Janelle Monae 10/4: Broken Social Scene 11/23: Grinderman

Just thought the second thing I said was more relevant. But I'll stick by the statement that changing into coachellapalooza didn't work out well for Roo in 08.

08 didn't work out? Please. Were you there? PJ & MMJ were two of the best performances of any Roo. 09 was a disappointment IN MY OPINION. The late night schedule was just not put together well. Animal Collective not at night? What the hell? Yeasayer was the shit and they deserved to be matched up against GT on Friday. I look forward to 10'. There is no way I see Rush headlining, however. Im sorry but they are just not that big of a deal. I saw them in 05' in Nashville and Starwood didn't even come close to selling out. Thus, my predictions.
Fri-- The White Stripes Sat.-- Bowie or RHCP Sun-- SCI/DMB
I pray they bring back Animal Collective and give them a chance to play at night!

Yes, I was there, along with the record-low 64,999 other people. Selling the fewest tickets of any Roo does not equal keeping people interested and staying relevant.
I agree with what you're saying about 09; I was really disappointed with the latenights.

To be honest, other than Phish, 09 Roo reminded me a lot more of a Coachella or Lolla lineup than any other lineup. However, Roo has a lot more roots music, the Africa tent, Bluegrass, you won't find those bands at the other festivals. Maybe one or two bands would make it, but not the whole day. That's what makes Bonnaroo great, the diversity, I just think we should see that diversity in the Sunday headliner as well. The only Jam headliner I'd be excited to see on their would be The Dead, anything else would be pretty bad in my opinion.
EDIT: Also bring more dance music, I think it would go over real well especially with the potential for late nights.

I agree with this. I wonder if they would have sold as many tickets as they did, or even as many as they did in 08, without Phish headlining 2 nights? I don't know, but I kind of doubt it. In my opinion, without Phish this year Roo would have just been ok.
I think 08 was the most diverse lineup in Bonnaroo history. Give it another look. 09 is the most top heavy lineup in the history of modern american festivals (tho Lolla 08 had the Radiohead, NIN, Rage trifecta).
The Dead would be awesome but i would prefer MMJ or Phish again in that spot.
And Rush would make an awesome friday headliner, i dont care who's forgotten about them. And RHCP would be a friday headliner, not saturday. imo.

That.
And I would think RHCP would be more like latenight Which or maybe something like the Byrne/Beastie slot this year.

I actually think 06 had the best lineup, but im basing that on the fact i havent seen Radiohead, Beck, or Tom Petty. 08 was without a doubt the most diverse, they not only represented nearly every genre but booked some of the top live bands in the world to represent those genres (Metallica, Plant and Krauss, My Morning Jacket, Tiesto, Pearl Jam, Stephen Marley, Widespread Panic, BB King, Sigur Ros)
