I own every Queen record with the main 4 and am a HUGE fan. I consider Freddie Mercury the greatest frontman of all time. However when Freddie or Brian wrote songs they were good. The new Muse sounds like Queen circa 1985 without any hooks.

I don't know about the Deep South, but when Panic plays up here it's 3-5k venues. Phil Lesh plays theaters.
Wasn't it the year before their big Roo show that Pearl Jam was opening some dates of the Tom Petty tour? Opening for a band like U2 on a stadium tour is pretty big.
I was looking at the historical touring data on the Muse page. When playing solo in the US they play at 10-15000 person venues. That is pretty impressive, and larger than I thought, however it is nowhere near what a Bonnaroo headliner can sell. Even WSP can sell 35-40k on their own, Muse is nothing like that big. Also I noticed they are on tour opening for U2 right now, this should also tell you something, bands that can headline Bonnaroo do not typically spend the year prior playing 45 minute sets in front of fans that mostly do not care or, have not showed up yet.
I saw Muse on their last tour and they couldn't fill a 5,000 seat arena in downtown Boston. WSP was even worse. Last year they played a venue holding 2,000 and got maybe 1,000, tops.
That being said Muse is the perfect late night band on a big stage. Their show alone needs it with all the lights and images they use. I think a lot will be determined how this new album breaks for them. They have a spot on the MTV video music awards this year ( i know i know but it is a mass media that will get them out to a lot of people). There is no shame in opening for U2 at all!. Back in the late 90's when the Stones played stadiums I remember Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and DMB opened at some point during the tour. If U2 comes and asks you to open most bands say yes!

Pearl Jam, Metallica, DMB just opened for the Rolling Stones on their last tour (2006). I guess that re-confirms that all 3 of those bands are huge though, as that is who the Rolling Stones get for their openers...
If Muse plays, they'll probably get the Nine Inch Nails slot, aka the pretty big band but not quite big enough to hold down an entire night by themselves. Not that Nine Inch Nails couldn't have (they're kind of in the weird section between headliner status and too big to play anything else, ala White Stripes).

Panic in the south is huge, though. They do two night stands at all the huge amphitheaters. They're definitely a regional band. Phil Lesh is the only headlining band that has ever surprised me, but I can easily see why considering what fanbase Bonnaroo draws.
Pearl Jam kind of co-billed the show with Tom Petty. He had some big openers that summer (I saw him with the Allman Brothers Band. It was amazing). PJ and Petty did two night stands when they played together, and pretty much everyone sat through both sets...

He's but a pup. Roger Waters turns 66 in September. Phil Lesh is 69. David Crosby and Graham Nash are 67. Neil is relatively young at 63, and so is David Gilmour.
I know that he would not be a headliner but how do you guys think Ringo Starr would be received at Roo? I know his solo stuff has not been the best but he is still a rock legend. Would he make the What stage? Al Green's time slot?
Bonnaroo should try to book both McCartney & Ringo.... then there would be no reason that they couldn't play together

Ringo solo would probably get a timeslot/stage similar to Willie Nelson or Elvis Costello. Big name and legendary in his own right....but not big enough for headliner. Especially solo. I'm sure plenty would see his show.....but I wouldn't be upset if he was left off the lineup.
uhhhh. I mean it would be cool i guess but what would be the point of the Ringo All Stars? Photograph, It Dont Come Easy, Octopus Garden?
After doing a little research my revised picks for headliners in 2010 is
Friday- White Stripes/Red Hot Chili Peppers (apparently starting back up in the fall) Saturday- ZZ Top/Rolling Stones (Ron Wood calims world tour in 2010) Sunday- Flaming Lips/Roger Waters (Maybe performing The Wall)
-with Daft Punk and Arcade Fire as the Which Stage late nights -with Basement Jaxx, Cypress Hill, The Roots, Devo, The Gossip, Lupe Fiasco, Levon Helm and Portugal The Man in late night tents.
-Throw in John Fogerty, Joni Mitchell, The Shins, New Pronographers, Wolfmother, SCI, Matisyahu, Blitzen Trapper, Down, Devendra Barhart, and Feist and you've got yourself a festival.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself

I like where your head is at.
Totally down for those headliners (though I'd prefer White Stripes and Rolling Stones over RHCP and ZZ Top....but that's just me). Jack White and the Stones seem friendly enough that I could see another collaboration on the farm happen. Keep in mind that many will debate whether the Stripes could headline or not....but i'd like to see them there.
Also i'm loving your picks for the "throw in"'s. Fogerty would be a perfect fit and i'm awaiting a Wolfmother return.
I had White Stripes, ZZ Top, and The Lips as pre headliners. White Stripes would be the friday headliner if no RHCP. I only put them there because they were 4th in 07 and they technically wouldn't be losing any ground in 2010.

this is missing a few traditional roo genres such as african and bluegrass, but most of these bands will be making the rounds next year.

I see. I misread that as either/or and not pre--->headline......but your prediction still works for me
sorry if this is a stupid question, but are the stripes starting back up soon? I see some people have them as a headliner, but I wasn't aware of them working on anything, especially with the Dead Weather tour right now. I suppose they could be playing old material? Just curious! I would love to see the stripes!!
Well all the other rules don't apply to Jack White. As of March in 2008 there was no word of a 2nd Racs album. A week later its out and they are touring. If he can be that fast with a 4(5) man group than i'm pretty sure he and meg could get going in no time.
The White Stripes records usually take less than a month to record. In fact i believe Elephant was done in 12 days. They are releasing a documentary in September and plan to release another Stripes record in 2010. Beyond that nothing is known.

eventually coldplay will headline roo, although probably not next year as i think they are taking a hiatus after this tour.
i'm not a huge fan of their album songs, especially the newer stuff, but their live show is freaking unbelievable. think flaming lips on steroids -- hundreds of huge balloons and confetti and coming out and playing in the crowd with awesome lights and lasers to boot. and these 3d spherical balloon projections they have are pretty much the coolest thing ever
Well i dont see em there next year as i think there are only really about 10 options for a Bonnaroo that is attempting to keep getting better.
RHCP, RAGE, Jay Z, Rush, or AC/DC will be the Friday Headliner McCartney, Rolling Stones, Radiohead, or The Who will be Saturday Roger Waters, Phish, or The Dead for Sunday
and i LOVE the idea of for 2011 and the ten year anniversary that every band and comedian on the lineup has previously played Bonnaroo in some form or another. (Neil Young, Radiohead, The Dead)

Phish again? 3 sets in 2 years? Would they really do that?
I am probably in the minority on this board but after this years 2 sets... I will say that if they headline Sunday I may just leave early.
Probably not, on the other hand I don't think anyone had ever played both a latenight and a headline slot before this year. So who knows, maybe they'll play three sets next year, four the next, etc. until Bonnaroo gets turned into Phisaroo for real.
Phish should close out Sunday every year for the history of Bonnaroo. I can't think of any band that could fit as well with What Stage as Phish does; to me it seemed almost as if the stage was made for them. They just belong playing Sunday at Bonnaroo...and I wasn't even a fan going in.

2/5- Papadosio 3/3- MUSE 3/12- John Mayer 3/19- The Werks 3/31- Passion Pit 4/18- Ben Folds 4/20- Against Me! 6/10- Bonnaroo 6/30- Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey
I saw Weezer close for Tenacious D (Tenacious D doesnt open for ANYONE but sometimes they have a closing band to calm everyone down before they drive home... for safety) and they were great. HOWEVER.. this is after the Green Album. I dont think Id wanna see them these days with all the "Beverly Hills" type music they're making. Give me Weezer circa 1995 and Id be so down.
I saw Weezer on the Foozer tour and it was outstanding. The band was ripe and pop nuggets were all over the place as well as Rivers shredding like a madman. They would be a good preheadliner to someone like McCartney if ya ask me.

And as far as Phish goes it's just that i know they will be releasing JOY and likely supporting it for a while. Maybe they will end the tour at Broo. I'm not a HUGE jam fan but i like Phish a whole lot more than DMB, or Widespread.
