Since this was my first year, I would be curious to hear how things were different this year compared to previous ones. For instance I heard much beforehand about upgraded facilities since AC bought the site and were the stages in the same locations etc...

Yeah I did not notice anything major either, but there were a few minor things.
Ferris wheel was back down to $5 from $6 the year before!
VIP was smaller, where I was placed in Sloane Peterson would've been the VIP RV area in 08.
The fountain actually had some effort put into it's paint job.
No real large permanent shakedown that I found, and I walked through just about the entire campgrounds only finding small little outposts but many, many more traveling salesmen. Paper bong anyone? lol
I mentioned this in the map thread but there were two new camping areas in the far north, Camp Long Duk Dong and Camp The Greek. A volunteer camping area was added just northwest of family camping.
From my estimates looking at the festival map, VIP was actually bigger, extending past East 1st st, _not_ smaller.
Also, they did move the discoteque arcade so that it was further from the Other tent and much closer (further east) to That tent.
I was surprised at the overall lack of physical improvements at the festival. I was incredibly surprised at how poorly the mud was handled in the venue. From what I could see, nothing was done to combat mud except for sand in a single tent.
yeah they did the Troo Music Lounge right. I only went last year and it was just a big covered tent. i liked how they had a tent over the stage and on both sides, with an open area in the middle to rage

you must not have been looking hard. it was very apparent where shakedown was, and it was permanent lol. being my first time, and one of the main things i was looking for, it almost found me.
Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, The Mars Volta, Snoop Dogg, TV on the Radio, MGMT, The Knux, Crystal Castle, Julia Nunes, Tobacco, Portugal. The Man, Gomez, Animal Collective, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santigold, David Byrne, Public Enemy, Girl Talk, Bon Iver, Gov't Mule, Citizens Cope, Andrew Bird, Coheed & Cambria & Phish.

i saw many bags of hay being put down on the mud, but too late in the weekend. and it kind of only masked the mud, you thought you were fine, when you were really worse off than just walking in the mud.

where was this elusive place? don't tell me 3rd ave, that was the official vending area, with some traveling salesmen thrown in. i literally walked the entire campgrounds, with the exception of pod 1.
all i ever found was the random 1 or 2 vendors setup here and there.

Every year I hear conflicting reports about where the "real" shakedown is. I think it's just different people claiming the area they found is the "real" shakedown. It's kinda silly to hear about all the different places.

well in previous years you'd have entire markets setup with permanent unofficial vendors. it seems they really cracked down on that this year, which in some ways was nice b/c a lot more stuff came to your camp, but there's nothing quite like a spun out 50yo wookette hawking (bunk) headdy brownies next to a sketchy dude selling veggie and pineapple burritos blessed with his crystals.
never had a prob finding it before. unless i missed it somehow, i don't think there was one which is kinda sad.

yeah, 3rd ave was no more of a shakedown than the vendors lined up on bushy branch. i had no need to find it though, travelling salesman were coming through the campsite constantly where we were.
did anyone get a bloody mary from the people that were walking around selling them every morning for $5 around the rocky camps? well worth the $5...great homemade mix. also my $5 unofficial shot glass with shot of cheap ass vodka included was quite the steal IMO

Troo Music Lounge
FAAAAAAR superior to year's past. Way to step that up. When I saw that Russian Circles was playing it I thought, NO WAY. But it worked because they moved it and made it bigger. Well done.

there was a large permanent shakedown that was most definitely not a random set up. It was crackin. It was like a 15 minute walk from the good edge of the RV area. We went there pretty much everyday. Found exactly what we were looking for everytime. I even bought these sunglasses that had a 3-D glasses option on them. Best purchase of my entire experience.
Yeah! That was the one. It did when I was there a few times. Towards the end of TMV some equally loud band began playing in the lounge and it was all bleeding together. I was pissed b/c I only got to see the last half of the show in the first place.

that equally loud band was Russian Circles. They were awesome, but I agree. This was not fair to TMV or Russian Circles. The Troo music lounge has grown and needs a better spot.
On a side note, after TMV it was fun to watch as the fans followed the noise over to Russian Circles. Like little children hearing the sounds of laughter and rushing to join in the fun.
