Seeing as though we're past the halfway mark, I figured I'd start a list/personal opinion thread pertaining to the best shows anyone has seen thus far this year....
As of now (barring some odd bootleg occurrence changes my opinion) this is what I've got:
1. Nine Inch Nails - Bonnaroo Truly amazing show. Lights were perfect for the atmosphere and the stage, sound was fantastic, setlist was superb(easily the best of the whole tour), there was a strong sense of emotion not only from the band, but the crowd as well. Hurt? The Day The World Went Away? Becoming? I'm Afraid of Americans? Wish with DEP? La Mer into The Fragile? Underneath It All? Dead Souls? Need I go on? Some of the crowd sucked, but I could honestly care less.
2. Nine Inch Nails - Atlanta, Ga (5-10-09) Third show of the tour, great performance, good speech from Trent, and some nice surprises. For me, seeing Heresy, Mr. Self Destruct, and The Becoming for the first time was enough. Then, he gets Saul smurfing Williams out to do Survivalism and debut Saul's "Niggy Tardust" gem Banged and Blown Through. Fantastic show... other highlights are; Metal, Head Like A Hole (of course), Something I Can Never Have, Physical, and Big Come Down were definite highlights.
3. The Mars Volta - Bonnaroo Great performance, hugely entertaining throughout, and an interesting vibe take this one up over PE. Not the best TMV show I've seen, it featured some great new changes to some classic; the Cygnus jam is without question the best I've heard live, and possibly the best I've heard even from boots, Roulette Dares had a new take on it's jamming that enthralled me, and Luciforms was proven to be a killer live track, as I suspected. Same setlist as last tour kind of disappointed, but the two new songs and new takes on a couple of classics made up for it. Cedric was smurfing hilarious throughout... he gets my vote for runner up of best physical performace at Roo, right behind Flavor Flav.
4. Public Enemy - Bonnaroo So, we're all tired as hell. After David Byrne, we all stride through 45 minutes of Phish and 20 minutes of Femi Kuti (which looked awesome) into the PE show. Good god, best hip hop show I've ever seen. All of It Takes A Nation Of Millions... (my favorite rap album) interspersed by fantastic banter between Chuck and Flav, then a good number of other classics. To top it all off, Flav commanded the stage for about 10 minutes... he is one of the best at what he does, my respect for Flavor Flav has gone up ten fold. Fantastic, fun, enlightening show.
5. Modest Mouse - Raleigh, NC (3-11-09) I'd heard many negative things about Modest Mouse's live show since the release of Good News, so I'd had a few opportunities to see them, but declined. I am not a fan of the newest album, but have grown to like Good News, especially after this show. There was such a great sense of passion behind the performance... Setlist highlights; Dramamine (with Life Like Weeds lyrical jam), Interstate 8, Doin The Cockroach (with Lounge lyrical jam), Broke, Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice On Ice.
6. Erykah Budu - Bonnaroo 7. Gov't Mule - Bonnaroo 8. Al Green - Bonnaroo 9. Janes Addiction - Nine Inch Nails - Atlanta, Ga (5-10-09) 10. David Byrne - Bonnaroo 11. MURS - Bonnaroo 12. Galactic - Bonnaroo 13. Girl Tak - Bonnaroo 14. Street Sweeper Social Club - Nine Inch Nails - Atlanta, Ga (5-10-09) 15. Snoop Dogg - Bonnaroo

1. Phish @ Knoxville 6/10/09
This may go down as one of the greatest shows I've ever even seen live. Everything was spot on with the band and the setlist was perfect for me. The energy from the crowd was nuts and the band definitely fed off of it for the majority of their show. Kuroda was doing some funky things with the lights as always, including inverting them and putting a light display over the crowd behind the stage. We had a sweet spot pretty close to the stage beside Fishman, and it was the first time I had ever noticed what a machine that guy is on the drums!
2. Disco Biscuits @ Starscape Music Festival 6/06/09
What do you do when you're given a time slot of 1-4 at an all night rave of a festival? Well, play until 5:30 of course! This show raged like I had never seen before. Starscape is most definitely turning into a Biscuits festival with the way they bring it every year. The Caterpillar > Voices > Orch Theme > Great Abyss > Spacebird > Caterpillar absolutely blew my mind to pieces, and I'm honestly not quite sure I've actually recovered since then yet.
3. moe. @ Bonnaroo 6/11/09
Another all night show with amazing energy. I absolutely loved how they interwined Grace Potter & the Nocturnals onto the stage one by one for moe.'s setbreak. There was nothing I wanted more on Saturday night of Roo than to have 5 hours of nonstop tunes to enjoy until the sunrise. It was my first time ever really giving moe. a listen and they far exceeded any expectations I had of them. The fact that the tent stayed packed until the end of the show just added to the excitement of being there at the show
4. David Byrne @ Bonnaroo 6/14/09
I didn't even see the entire show but this was an incredible show. You could've just seen 5 minutes of the show and known that it was something special. Byrne was simply on point and his dancers on stage really added to the whole show. I was in my glory, and it was much harder than I thought it would be to leave early to stake a spot for Phish. I almost regret the decision just a little bit... almost. Regardless, this was definitely one of the best shows of the weekend at Roo no doubt. If I had been able to see the entire show it probably would've even crept up a spot or two.
5. The Dead @ Charlottesville 4/15/09
I would put Philly's Spectrum show in this slot, but I actually got to see both sets of this show and it was my first time seeing The Dead. I missed the opening song due to a freak accident that landed me unexpectedly in the first aid room and borderline freaking out, but once I got a bandage and knew I was gonna be fine I bailed at first chance I got to get back into the show and it was incredible. The Drums > Space took me to another planet. Really, the whole 2nd set was just perfect.
Honorable mentions:
6. Phish @ Bonnaroo 6/14/09 7. Phish @ Bonnaroo 6/12/09 8. Andrew Bird @ The National, Richmond VA 2/02/09 9. Elvis Perkins in Dearland w/ The Woes @ The Outback Lounge, Charlottesville, VA 5/18/09 10. Phish @ Hampton Colisem 3/08/09
Here in a little while, I'll start a definitive Best of 09 Live thread, I've got one more for sure show left this year (maybe more). My list may get shuffled around, but Skinny Puppy will for sure find it's way into my top 3.
Coming up for me is Unknown Hinson on the day before my birthday, which may make the list, but I've never seen him before, so I don't know.
we still think alike ty. i just put my list together yesterday.
