I thought about posting this in the "I got robbed" thread but I figured a new thread might be better. What do folks do to secure their stuff during 'Roo or help reduce the likelihood of getting ripped off?
I don't know if these are good things or not, but we have done some or all of the following during festivals:
- Put anything of value in the car when not at camp. - Make friends at neighboring campsites. - Chain or cable chairs/tables/cooler/etc together with a lock. - Lock the tent/screenhouse/etc.
The last one we debate about a good deal. Does locking your tent really reduce the likelihood of stuff getting stolen or just mean your tent is going to get slashed up?

i leave nothing of value in my tent. i carry some cash on me and my ID, but leave the rest of my cash and my wallet locked in the car as well. i don't lock my tent. IMO it tells potential thieves that i have something in there, plus if i do get robbed i don't end up with a slashed tent also. just missing clothes basically. i have never chained anything up at the campsite. i've never had a problem with people stealing anything either. i always go with a fairly large group, and chances are there is at least one person at the campsite at most times throughout the day...and we make friends with the neighbors as well

Anything I'd really miss gets put in the car. Just my airmattress and sleeping bag and a few articles of clothing stay in the tent.
For those who don't have the option of the car, I saw a battery powered motion detector with a light and siren at walmart while shopping this year for roo supplies. Maybe set one of those up at your tent? Leave a pair of spare sandals on the outside of the door? I dunno, nothing's fool proof, but I think you can certainly improve your odds.
Making firends with all of your neighbors is great advice.

we locked our tent, and had luggage locks on our hockey bags full of goods. and, one of the hockey bags held other bags as well, so, if they want to slash open a tent and 3 bags, by all means, take my stuff, you want it more than me.
just be sensible, don't leave anything in a tent you wont be able replace.

I lock all my personal stuff in my car. Only my sleeping bag and pillow are in my tent, which does not get locked. I leave out my folding chairs and my coolersunder the shade tent and sometimes a hanging lantern. I haven't had any issues yet with anything being messed with, so I guess I have been lucky so far.
Yeah. I locked everything in the car then I would zip tie my grill (nice tailgating grill, it has wheels etc) to our staked EZ-Up figuring it would be too much hassle to take. Anything I left out i didn't care about.

I agree with the non-tent-lockers. You're living in a fabric house, the lock is not going to do anything and like others said, it's basically just flagging your tent as having something valuable inside.
If you can't bear to lose something, don't leave it in the tent. Camera and ipod come with me wherever I go, and those are the only really valuable things I bring to Roo.
Making friends with all the neighbors is definitely a good plan, though!

i dont know tried the lock this year and it worked for me but then again I've always been lucky with not losing things. The only thing I have lost at roo was a box of cheezits and thats over 4 years, so ive been very lucky!
